Eddie Howe suddenly stepped down as Newcastle United manager on July 30, 2026, only a few weeks before the start of the 2026/2027 English Premier League season. This guide looks at who’s the favourite to be the next Newcastle manager.
Eddie Howe is leaving St James’ Park after five years in charge. He informed the club about his intention to leave due to personal reasons. His final act as the manager was a 4-1 friendly defeat to Championship side Bristol City. Newcastle’s hierarchy reportedly tried to talk him out of the decision.
He’s expected to take a break from football. Howe’s time at Newcastle saw some success, including ending a 70-year wait for a trophy by winning the League Cup in 2025. They also returned to the Champions League twice, including a famous 4-1 group-stage victory over PSG at St James’ Park.
The 2025/2026 season was disappointing, with a 12th-place finish, but not many people expected him to be gone by the start of the next season.
The next Newcastle manager betting odds markets were only taking off when it emerged that Howe’s successor was close to being appointed. The overwhelming favourite is Matthias Jaissle. The 38-year-old German is currently in charge of Al Ahli, with an appointment said to be imminent.
Al Ahli, like Newcastle, is majority-owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which makes a deal considerably smoother. He has an impressive CV for a young man, including back-to-back AFC Champions League Elite titles with Al Ahli (2025 and 2026), consecutive Austrian Bundesliga crowns and a cup with Red Bull Salzburg.
His style is high-intensity and front-foot football, somewhat similar to Howe’s approach. However, the obvious question mark is his lack of Premier League experience.
Before settling on Jaissle, Newcastle’s shortlist reportedly included Kieran McKenna and Antonio Conte. One is a young British coach and the other a proven serial winner. Both would carry more Premier League credibility than Jaissle, but neither appears to be the club’s first choice.
The reaction to Jaissle has been mixed, with Newcastle’s relegation odds being slashed dramatically due to a flurry of activity on the team dropping down. It’s been a tough summer, with the loss of players like Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon, and speculation that Lewis Hall and Bruno Guimarães may also leave. The optimists talk about how Jaissle is an exciting young coach with a history of winning trophies.
