Chelsea
Manchester UnitedEight games without a win in all competitions. Six straight Premier League matches without a victory. Sitting 16th in the table with just one point separating them from the relegation zone. Manchester United’s start to the 2026/27 season is not just bad, it is historically bad. We are talking their worst Premier League points return since 1986/87, and the chaos swirling around Old Trafford shows absolutely no sign of letting up. When Bournemouth roll into your ground and win 3/0 for the third time in four seasons, you know something is fundamentally broken. Michael Carrick is still in the hotseat, somehow, but the question is not just whether he can fix this. The question is whether anyone can.
Chelsea are hardly in sparkling shape themselves. Back to back defeats to Spurs and Liverpool have knocked them out of the top four and knocked the confidence out of a squad that briefly looked like it might click into gear after putting seven goals past Bournemouth and Everton combined. Xabi Alonso has work to do, and this lunchtime fixture at Stamford Bridge is the kind of game that could shift the narrative for either side. Or, given the form of both clubs, it could just add another layer of misery to an already grim October.
The game takes place at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League. It is a lunchtime kickoff, the kind of slot that tends to favour the home side given the atmosphere it generates early in the day. Chelsea have home advantage in what is shaping up to be one of the most compelling and chaotic fixtures of the weekend across the English football pyramid.
Both managers are dealing with notable absentees, though United’s situation in midfield is particularly threadbare heading into this one.
For Chelsea, the big call is up front. Danny Welbeck was unconvincing in the EFL Cup in midweek, and with Pedro still absent, Alonso may opt to deploy Cole Palmer as a false nine now that he is back from suspension. Wesley Fofana comes in for Lacroix at the back, and despite his nightmare showing at Anfield where he gave away a penalty and then missed his own in the shootout, he is the obvious replacement.
Chelsea: Penders; Acheampong, Fofana, Colwill, Hato; Henderson, Lavia, Caicedo; Neto, Palmer, Rogers
United are expected to welcome Fernandes back into the starting eleven after his controversial omission against Bournemouth. Carrick should stick with the shape that at least gives them some defensive structure, even if the personnel in front of the back four remains a concern without Ugarte pulling the strings in the middle.
Manchester United: Lammens; Mazraoui, Maguire, Martinez, Dalot; Santos, Baleba; Mbeumo, Fernandes, Mount; Cunha
Chelsea’s recent run tells a complicated story. The wins over Bournemouth and Everton after the international break looked like a turning point, but the 2/0 defeat at home to Spurs exposed familiar problems at the back, and the midweek cup exit at Anfield will have stung. The Blues remain outside the top four and carry the unwanted distinction of having one of the leakiest defences in the top half of the table. Conceding 15 goals already, with only Crystal Palace and Ipswich having shipped more, and averaging two goals against per home game, this is not a side you would describe as defensively solid. They have quality in attack, but Alonso has not yet found a way to make them hard to beat.
United’s form is simply alarming. Eight games without a win across all competitions. No away victory in the Premier League yet this season from six attempts. The manner of last weekend’s home defeat to Bournemouth was brutal, and the fallout from Fernandes being dropped mid season by his own manager tells you everything about the atmosphere around the club right now. Carrick has been given more time, but with the board under fire and the dressing room under pressure, there is very little to suggest a turnaround is imminent.
What makes this fixture interesting is that both sides are capable of scoring, and both sides have shown they can be cut open. This is not a game between a solid defensive unit and a free scoring attack. It is two vulnerable backlines up against two reasonably creative attacks, which sets up a competitive and probably fairly open game.
History offers United a sliver of encouragement, though you have to squint to find it. Carrick’s side actually won both Premier League meetings between these clubs in the 2025/26 season, doing the double over Chelsea. Across the last 19 head to heads in all competitions, Chelsea have won just three, which is a strikingly low return for a club that has spent heavily and considers itself a top four outfit.
That said, the wider context matters enormously here. Those previous United wins came when they were a different side to the one turning up at Stamford Bridge this weekend, and Stamford Bridge has not been a happy hunting ground for United in recent years. Chelsea’s home record against the big clubs tends to improve when they have something to prove, and they absolutely do right now.
The angle here is pretty clear. Chelsea are flawed but they are at home, they are getting Palmer back, and they are facing a United side that cannot buy a win on the road. United will create chances, Fernandes returning adds some quality, and this Chelsea defence is generous enough that you cannot rule out the visitors scoring. But backing United to get anything from this one feels like a stretch too far given everything going on around that club right now.
This is a fixture with needle and both sides have players who can be reckless in the tackle when the pressure is on. United’s midfield has been stretched and stressed all season, and you would expect some frustration to boil over in a lunchtime London derby with plenty at stake. Expect at least four bookings across the 90 minutes. Over 3.5 cards looks a fair shout.
Chelsea tend to generate good corner counts at Stamford Bridge when they are on the front foot, and with United expected to sit a little deeper to try and absorb pressure, the Blues should be winning plenty of set pieces. Add in United’s own threat from wide areas and this could be a corner heavy game. Over 9.5 corners looks reasonable.
Two leaky defences, a returning Cole Palmer, a desperate United side swinging for a result they badly need, and a Chelsea team that has been scoring but also conceding freely. The ingredients are all there for goals. Over 2.5 is the call here, and given the defensive records of both sides it would not be a shock to see three or four in this one.
Chelsea have conceded in almost every game this season and United, despite their woeful run, still carry a goal threat particularly with Fernandes returning and Mbeumo in the side. The Chelsea backline is short of cover with Lacroix out and James still unavailable. Both teams to score looks well worth backing here. Yes is the pick.
Cole Palmer is the standout shout. He is fresh from a one game suspension, he is playing in a side desperate to get back to winning ways at home, and in a false nine role he will be getting into the right areas to make things happen. He has the quality to unlock this United defence and the personality to want to stamp his mark on a big occasion. Palmer to score first is the selection.
| Market | Selection |
|---|---|
| Both Teams To Score | Yes |
| Over 2.5 Goals | Over 2.5 |
| First Goalscorer | Cole Palmer |
Two porous defences, a returning Palmer full of motivation after his ban, and enough attacking quality on both sides to make goals almost inevitable in this fixture.
Chelsea have too much going for them at home here, even accounting for their own defensive vulnerabilities. Palmer’s return is a major boost, the home crowd will get behind them, and United simply cannot be trusted to hold anything together on the road right now. Carrick’s side will probably cause Chelsea a few moments of panic, because that is what this Chelsea backline invites, but getting a result from Stamford Bridge in this state feels beyond them.
Chelsea 2/1 Manchester United is the call. Enough goals to keep both sides’ fans nervous, but ultimately a home win that eases some of the pressure on Alonso while leaving Carrick with yet more questions to answer heading into the week.
