Who do you think will win?

Kilmarnock are in serious trouble. Bottom of the Scottish Premiership with eight points from eleven games, Neil McCann’s side are staring down the barrel of yet another relegation scrap, and this weekend’s home fixture against St Johnstone is exactly the kind of game they simply cannot afford to drop points in. A win would give Killie something to build on heading into November. Another defeat and the gap between them and safety starts to look genuinely worrying.

St Johnstone, meanwhile, are doing what newly promoted sides dream of doing. Simo Valakari has his team sitting comfortably in mid table after a solid enough opening to the campaign. They are not setting the heather on fire, but thirteen points from eleven games for a freshly promoted outfit is a decent return. The question is whether they can rediscover their cutting edge after a run without a win, and whether Rugby Park gives them the platform to do exactly that.

Kilmarnock vs St Johnstone Match Details

This Scottish Premiership matchday twelve fixture takes place at Rugby Park in Kilmarnock. Killie have the home advantage here, but given how their season has unfolded so far, that might feel more like a burden than a boost. St Johnstone make the trip north having already shown this season that they are no strangers to making life difficult for the hosts at this ground.

Team News

Neither side goes into this one at full strength, though the injury lists are relatively short. Here is where things stand heading into the weekend.

  • Bailey Rice is out for Kilmarnock through injury
  • Max Stryjek is also unavailable for the hosts, leaving McCann with a selection to sort between the sticks
  • The rest of the Killie squad is fit and available
  • Sam Stanton misses out for St Johnstone with an ongoing injury problem
  • Zach Mitchell is also sidelined for the Saints
  • Josh Fowler, St Johnstone’s top scorer with six league goals, is fit to lead the line

Predicted Lineups

McCann looks set to go with the same attacking trio that has been his go to combination. Greg Kiltie, Kilmarnock’s top scorer in the league with three goals, should operate alongside Joe Hugill and Tyreece John-Jules in what has been a fairly settled front three. The real issue for McCann is not who plays up top but whether the defence can be organised enough to keep St Johnstone quiet.

Kilmarnock: Mantl; Brandon, McCarthy, Stanger, Deas; Lowery, Tshibola, Schjonning-Larsen; Kiltie, Hugill, John-Jules

Valakari is expected to stick with his shape and back Fowler to lead the attack. Taylor Steven, Ruari Paton and Jamie Gullan should provide the support behind him, while McAlear and Holt will look to control the middle of the park.

St Johnstone: Steward; Todd, Finlayson, Diabate, Alic; McAlear, Holt; Steven, Paton, Gullan; Fowler

Recent Form

Kilmarnock’s form is a real concern. After losing their opening four games, there was a brief flicker of life where they put together two wins, two draws and another win across five games. Fans at Rugby Park had cause to feel a little more optimistic. But that momentum has been well and truly killed off now. Back to back heavy defeats against Falkirk, where they were beaten three nil, and then a three one loss to Dundee, have left Killie looking fragile all over again. Two games, six goals conceded, one scored. That is not good enough for a side fighting to stay in the division.

The underlying numbers make grim reading too. No team in the Scottish Premiership has conceded more than Kilmarnock’s twenty six goals. At the other end, only Hibernian match their return of eleven goals scored. Both boxes ticked for the wrong reasons. McCann will know that this cannot continue, but finding a solution has so far proven elusive.

St Johnstone’s recent form is less alarming but still a little flat. They have not won in their last three, picking up two draws and suffering one defeat during that stretch. For a promoted side, going winless for three games is not a catastrophe, but Valakari will be keen to arrest the slide before it becomes a habit. The Saints have thirteen goals in eleven matches, which is functional rather than frightening, but going up against a Killie back four that has shipped twenty six goals this term might be exactly the remedy they need.

Head-to-Head Record

The recent head to head between these two clubs is worth paying attention to. Kilmarnock will point to their last meeting at Rugby Park, back in February 2025, when they ran out three one winners and will be hoping for a repeat of that kind of performance on home soil. That result will give the Killie faithful some hope that history can repeat itself.

However, the more recent chapter in this rivalry belongs to St Johnstone. On the very first day of this season, the Saints rocked up at Rugby Park and put on a dominant display to win four three. That result set the tone for St Johnstone’s encouraging campaign and it also tells you something important about how these two sides match up right now. Kilmarnock’s leaky defence was exposed from the off, and there is little evidence since then that the problems have been fixed.

Key Stats

  • Kilmarnock have conceded twenty six goals in eleven games, the worst defensive record in the division
  • St Johnstone’s top scorer Josh Fowler has six league goals in eleven appearances, making him one of the more prolific strikers in the Premiership this term
  • St Johnstone have taken just four points from five away games this season, a record that keeps this game more competitive than the league positions might suggest

Kilmarnock vs St Johnstone Betting Tips

The numbers point pretty clearly in one direction here. Kilmarnock’s defence is a mess, St Johnstone have a striker in the kind of form that punishes bad back fours, and the Saints have already proven they can win at Rugby Park this season. The away record is the one caveat, but against a Killie side this vulnerable at home, it is hard to argue against St Johnstone taking the points.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Josh Fowler is the standout pick here. Six goals in eleven league games for a side that does not exactly create a mountain of chances is seriously impressive. He is clinical, he is confident, and he is up against a Kilmarnock defence that has not kept a clean sheet with any consistency. Back Fowler to open the scoring.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Given that these two sides combined for seven goals the last time they met, and that Kilmarnock’s defensive record is the worst in the league, going over two and a half goals feels like the sensible call. Killie also tend to score, so there should be action at both ends.

Cards Prediction

A relegation threatened home side under pressure at Rugby Park against a confident away team. That is a recipe for some feisty tackling and frustration boiling over from the Kilmarnock players as the game wears on. Expect over three and a half cards in this one.

Correct Score Prediction

The four three scoreline from matchday one was wild, but a repeat of that kind of chaos feels unlikely. A tighter but still productive game feels more realistic, and one two to St Johnstone reflects both their quality and Kilmarnock’s ability to at least get themselves on the scoresheet.

Corners Prediction

Kilmarnock will be pushing for a result at home and getting bodies forward, which should generate plenty of set piece situations. St Johnstone are not a side that sits deep either. Over nine and a half corners is a reasonable target in a game where both teams will be committed in attack.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
First Goalscorer Josh Fowler
Over/Under Goals Over 2.5 Goals
Match Result St Johnstone Win

Fowler scoring, plenty of goals, and the Saints taking the three points all flow naturally from the same logic: Kilmarnock’s defence cannot cope and St Johnstone’s main man is in the form of his life.

Final Match Prediction

Kilmarnock need a reaction badly, and McCann will have his players fired up for this one. But wanting it and having the defensive organisation to get something from the game are two very different things. The holes at the back are deep rooted at this point, and St Johnstone showed earlier this season that they know exactly how to exploit them.

St Johnstone’s away form is a concern and keeps this from being a foregone conclusion, but Valakari’s side have the better individual quality across the pitch and a striker in Fowler who could hurt any team in the league right now. We are going with a one two to St Johnstone, the Saints edging another entertaining and slightly chaotic clash between two sides at very different points in their season.
