Lillestrom
Viktoria PlzenNeither side has managed to make any real impression on the 2026/27 Europa League so far, and Thursday night’s clash at Lillestrom carries genuine desperation for both camps. The Canaries have scraped together just a single point from three outings, while Viktoria Plzen are still yet to get off the mark after three consecutive defeats. With five rounds still to play, this is the kind of game where you cannot afford to be the side that drops more points. It might not have the glamour of some of the other European fixtures this week, but the stakes are very real.
Hans Erik Odegaard’s side won the Norwegian Cup last season to earn their spot in this competition, and they will know that their remaining fixtures against Lyon, Bournemouth and Celta Vigo are not going to be kind to them. Points need banking now, and Plzen represent the best opportunity on paper. The Czechs will be thinking exactly the same thing.
This Europa League league stage fixture takes place at Lillestrom’s home ground in Norway. Both sides sit in the bottom half of the overall standings and arrive knowing that a defeat here would leave their hopes of progressing in serious trouble. Five rounds remain after this one, but the mathematical pressure is already starting to bite.
Lillestrom are dealing with a couple of absentees but are otherwise in decent shape. Plzen have their own selection concerns heading into the contest.
Odegaard looks set to go with a solid attacking unit built around the partnership of Felix Va and the experienced Thomas Lehne Olsen. With Hoff and Tonnessen missing, there may be a slightly reshuffled look to the midfield, but the manager should have enough cover to keep things organised.
Lillestrom expected XI: Dahlberg; Ottesen, Foss, Gabrielsen, Paintsil; Ibrahimaj, Ottosson, Nyheim; Bassi, Olsen, Felix Va
Radoslav Kovac will look to Kabongo and Memic to provide a cutting edge that has been badly missing in Europe this season. With Paliscak, Dweh and Vavro forming what looks like a solid enough defensive foundation, Plzen will likely try to stay compact and hit on the break.
Viktoria Plzen expected XI: Wiegele; Paliscak, Dweh, Vavro, Souare; Hrosovsky, Cerv; Memic, Visinsky; Ladra, Kabongo
Lillestrom’s European form makes for grim reading. A 2-1 opening defeat at home to Torreense was followed by what looked like a momentum shift when they claimed a creditable draw away to Sparta Prague. But then came the 6-0 hammering by Real Sociedad on home soil, and that kind of result does not just hurt the points tally, it can shake confidence through an entire squad. Conceding six goals at your own ground in a major European competition is not something you shake off quickly.
What gives Odegaard’s men some cause for optimism is their domestic form. They have won each of their last three games in the Eliteserien, including a 1-0 win over Start, and there is clearly nothing fundamentally broken about this team when they are performing at their level. The Europa League, though, has exposed the gap between them and the better European sides.
Plzen’s record in this competition is even worse on paper, three games and three defeats, including a 3-0 home loss to Union SG and back to back 2-1 reverses against Ferencvaros and Levski. Losing at home to Levski in particular must have stung. Yet there are signs of life domestically, with Kovac’s side picking up back to back wins including a thumping 4-0 victory over Ostava just days ago. Last season these were a side who went the entire Europa League group phase unbeaten. The drop off in results this term is genuinely puzzling, and this fixture could go either way.
Lillestrom and Viktoria Plzen have not met often at this level, and there is no extensive head to head record to lean on here. These are two clubs from different leagues and different footballing cultures, brought together by the expanded Europa League format. Without a meaningful pattern of previous results to analyse, you have to go on current form and context rather than historical trends.
What we can say is that home advantage matters in European football at this level, and Lillestrom will fancy making their ground a difficult place to visit. Plzen have struggled away from home in this competition, and Thursday night could continue that trend.
This is a tricky one. Two teams low on European confidence, both with goals in them domestically but both leaking at the back in this competition. The safer plays here are in the markets around goals and match outcomes rather than trying to predict a winner with any great conviction. Here is where the value looks to be.
Yes looks the call here. Lillestrom have been vulnerable defensively in Europe, conceding in every game, and Plzen do carry a threat even if they have been misfiring. Kabongo and Memic should trouble a back four that has already shipped eight goals in three Europa League outings. Back BTTS at yes.
Under 2.5 goals is the lean here despite the defensive frailties on both sides. Two teams under pressure, with something real to lose, tend to tighten up. Neither attack has been clinical in Europe this season, and you would not be shocked to see both sides settle for a point fairly early. Under 2.5 goals appeals more than the alternative.
With both teams needing to push forward and neither particularly dominant in possession at this level, expect a decent corner count. Over 9.5 corners looks a reasonable play if the game opens up as two teams chasing points, though if it becomes a cagey affair early on the total could stay lower. The leaning is towards over 9.5 corners.
Two teams under pressure in a must not lose European tie has the ingredients for some niggly play and the odd booking. Nothing suggests this will boil over into a particularly ill tempered affair, but three or more cards across the 90 minutes would not surprise anyone. Over 2.5 cards looks a reasonable shout.
Felix Va is the standout pick here. Ten goals and five assists in 28 appearances this season tells you he is finding space and finishing chances regularly. He is likely to be Lillestrom’s primary threat going forward and with Plzen not exactly a fortress at the back right now, Va looks the best value in this market.
A 1-1 draw feels like the most natural outcome given where both sides are. Neither has the European quality to dominate this fixture, both will score, and neither looks capable of truly running away with it. The scoreline reflects two sides who are genuinely level in terms of current European form, which is to say, both struggling.
| Market | Selection |
|---|---|
| Both Teams To Score | Yes |
| Under 2.5 Goals | Under 2.5 |
| First Goalscorer | Felix Va |
A 1-1 scoreline with Felix Va opening the scoring ties all three picks together neatly, and with both sides needing to score to have any chance of progressing, the BTTS leg should do the heavy lifting.
This one is genuinely hard to call with confidence, and that tells you something in itself. When two teams are this evenly matched in terms of European struggles, a draw is often where you end up. Lillestrom will fancy their chances at home and have the better recent domestic form, but Plzen have the pedigree and the squad to grind out a result on the road.
The 1-1 feels right. Felix Va causes problems, Kabongo or Memic nicks one for the visitors, and both sides walk away with a point they desperately needed but probably not the three that would have made a real difference to their campaigns. Lillestrom 1-1 Viktoria Plzen.
