Lincoln City
Birmingham CityLincoln City have absolutely no interest in following the script that was written for them before a ball was kicked this season. Tipped by most to be dragged straight back down to League One, the Imps have been quietly building something at ProAmpac Stadium, and last weekend they absolutely demolished Burnley 4-1, with Mikkel Ladefoged grabbing a brilliant brace to send Nicky Hayen packing. That is the kind of result that reverberates around a division, and the confidence in that dressing room right now must be enormous.
Birmingham City arrive with their own story to tell, though. Chris Davies has built something genuinely impressive at St Andrews, and the Blues came into this weekend with the joint best defensive record in the Championship, having conceded just 12 goals in 12 games. A 1-0 loss at Cardiff last Saturday was a blip, but the manner of it will have stung Davies. No shots in the first half, should have conceded more than they did. That is not the Birmingham we have seen for much of this season, and you can bet Davies will have had a very direct conversation with his players about it this week.
This Championship fixture takes place at ProAmpac Stadium in Lincoln, as the newly promoted Imps continue their debut second tier campaign against a Birmingham side firmly established as one of the top half forces in the division. It is a fascinating clash between a club defying expectations from below and one that has genuine aspirations of pushing for promotion themselves.
Lincoln are carrying a couple of notable absences in defence, which could be significant against a Birmingham attack that, even without their first choice striker, carries plenty of threat.
Lincoln look set to line up with a back four that has been reshuffled by injury, with Coubis likely starting at right back in the continued absence of Darikwa. Ladefoged will lead the line after his two goals last week and will be desperate to build on that momentum against a much tougher defensive test.
Lincoln City: Wickens; Coubis, Elerewe, Towler, Reach; Konak, McGrandles; Hackett, House, Jefferies; Ladefoged.
For Birmingham, the big question is whether Priske is fit enough to start. If not, Davies will need to reorganise his attack, and there is a genuine argument for Patrick Roberts coming in on the right flank ahead of Carlos Vicente following the Cardiff defeat. Klarer and Neumann should continue to form the spine of a defence that has been excellent all season.
Birmingham City: Beadle; Osayi-Samuel, Neumann, Klarer, Cochrane; Iwata, Solis; Roberts, Bird, Millar; Stansfield.
Lincoln’s form is a fascinating split. Away from ProAmpac Stadium they have actually been the better side, which makes their home record genuinely puzzling. In six Championship matches at Sincil Bank this season, the Imps have won just one, drawing two and losing three, conceding 13 goals in the process. That is a lot of goals to be leaking at home, and it is the kind of statistic that Birmingham’s coaching staff will have pored over this week.
Last weekend’s 4-1 win over Burnley was the obvious outlier, and you do wonder how much of that was down to Burnley’s own chaos rather than Lincoln hitting peak form. The Clarets were a club in freefall, and the result accelerated Hayen’s exit. Birmingham represent a completely different level of opponent.
Birmingham came into this fixture on the back of three straight wins and clean sheets following the international break, which made the Cardiff result all the more jarring. Davies’s side are genuinely tough to beat and that defensive record of 12 goals conceded in 12 games tells you everything about how well organised they are. The Cardiff performance was a wobble, not a trend, and a trip to a Lincoln side with a shaky home record is exactly the kind of fixture Birmingham should be looking to bank a result in.
These clubs have not met at this level before, given the different journeys both have been on through the football pyramid in recent years. The most recent encounter of note was a 3-1 Birmingham win at Sincil Bank in October 2024, a League One fixture that Christoph Klarer started, and that result will not have been lost on the Blues captain as he prepares to return to the same ground.
That Lincoln home ground has not been a happy hunting ground for the Imps in this campaign, and Birmingham will fancy their chances of repeating what they did there two years ago, even if the competition and context is entirely different now.
Lincoln’s euphoria from the Burnley result is real, but Birmingham are a completely different proposition. Davies has built a defensively disciplined side that knows how to grind results out on the road, and Lincoln’s leaky home record is the kind of detail that does not escape good coaching staff. The value in this game is around a tight, low scoring affair that reflects the quality of Birmingham’s back line rather than another open shootout.
Lincoln will need to work hard physically to get back into the game if Birmingham take control, and with the Imps carrying some defensive vulnerabilities, there could be some desperate defending at times. A match between a top half Championship side and a newly promoted outfit with something to prove tends to produce a few late challenges and a handful of bookings. Expect somewhere around three to four cards across the ninety minutes.
This one is genuinely tricky given how well Birmingham defend, but Lincoln showed against Burnley that they are capable of hurting teams going forward, and Ladefoged in particular looks a real threat. Birmingham’s attack, even without Priske if he does not make it, has enough quality to nick a goal. BTTS yes is worth a look, though it is far from a certainty given that Birmingham defensive record.
A 1-1 draw feels like the most natural landing spot for this one. Lincoln have the crowd and the momentum to grab something, but Birmingham are too well organised to get turned over at a ground where the Imps themselves have been inconsistent all season. A share of the spoils suits the narrative of this fixture perfectly.
Mikkel Ladefoged has two goals in one game and will be absolutely buzzing heading into this. He gets the nod here. The Birmingham defence is excellent but Ladefoged has shown he has the quality to punish sides at this level, and he will be the focal point of everything Lincoln do going forward. At a reasonable price after his Burnley brace, he is the standout option.
| Market | Selection |
|---|---|
| Match Result | Draw |
| Both Teams To Score | Yes |
| First Goalscorer | Mikkel Ladefoged |
Ladefoged opening the scoring in a game that ends all square with both sides on the scoresheet captures the most likely flow of a tight, competitive fixture between two sides who both have reasons to push for a result.
Lincoln will be riding high after what they did to Burnley, and ProAmpac Stadium will be rocking. But Birmingham are not Burnley. Davies has drilled this side to be hard to beat, and that defensive partnership of Klarer and Neumann is as good as anything in the bottom half of the Championship table. The Imps’ home form has been the problem area all season, and Birmingham are exactly the kind of team to expose it.
A 1-1 draw looks the most probable outcome. Lincoln get their goal, the crowd gets their moment, but Birmingham show enough quality and organisation to come away with a point that keeps them in the top half picture. That feels right for where both clubs are right now.
