CompetitionEnglish League Championship
Who do you think will win?

There is something grimly compelling about a game like this one. Preston North End, rooted to the bottom of the Championship and six points adrift of safety, hosting a Sheffield United side that is starting to look dangerous again under Chris Wilder. For neutral observers, this is exactly the kind of midweek Championship fixture that reminds you why the second tier is so addictive. High stakes, contrasting fortunes, and a crowd at Deepdale that will be desperate for something, anything, to cling onto.

Graham Alexander is still finding his feet after taking charge at Deepdale, but the numbers on his watch make for grim reading. One point from four league games, the worst attack in the division and the worst defence. Sheffield United, meanwhile, are three points off the playoffs and building something that looks genuinely threatening. On paper this sets up nicely for the visitors. But football rarely cares about what the table says before kick off.

Preston North End vs Sheffield United Match Details

This Championship fixture takes place at Deepdale, Preston’s home ground since 1875 and one of the oldest football stadiums in the world still being used at this level. The game is being played under the lights on a Tuesday evening, and with Preston in their current position, the atmosphere inside the ground could easily tip either way depending on the early exchanges.

Team News

Both managers have selection decisions to make, though Sheffield United’s situation is arguably more disruptive given the number of potential absentees heading into this one.

  • Thierry Small came on at half time against Stoke and impressed enough to push for a start here. Brad Potts, who he replaced, drops to the bench at best.
  • Johnny Kenny is expected to keep his place up front for Preston, with Leo Leroy and Jordan Thompson the likely midfield pairing.
  • Andrew Hughes, Jordan Storey and Odeluga Offiah are anticipated to form the Preston back line.
  • Liam Kitching is suspended for Sheffield United after collecting his fifth yellow card against Wrexham, a significant loss at the back.
  • Tahith Chong and Romelle Donovan both came off with potential injuries against Wrexham, and their involvement here looks doubtful at best.
  • Mark McGuinness, Tom Cannon and Tyrese Campbell are all expected to come into the Sheffield United starting eleven to cover those absences.
  • Ben Brereton Diaz scored the winner on Friday and should keep his place in the Blades attack.

Predicted Lineups

Alexander looks set to go with Iversen in goal and a back three of Offiah, Storey and Hughes, with Small getting his chance at wing back after that promising cameo. Thompson and Leroy should sit in the middle of the park, with Vukcevic adding legs alongside them. Lang, Kenny and Burgzorg will be tasked with doing something with the ball in the final third, a job that has proved beyond Preston far too often this season.

Wilder will reshuffle his Sheffield United side considerably. Cooper between the sticks, with Choudhury, Tanganga, McGuinness and Burrows making up the back four. Cannon, Peck, Phillips and Campbell are likely to fill the midfield roles, with Ayew and Brereton Diaz as the attacking threat. It is a patched up XI, but there is real quality in it even with the enforced changes.

Recent Form

Preston’s recent run is genuinely alarming for anyone who supports the club. Four defeats in their last five Championship games under Alexander, and a 2-0 loss at Stoke on Saturday that felt about right given how little the Lilywhites offered going forward. They have scored just ten goals in thirteen league outings this season, the lowest total in the division. They have also let in twenty seven, more than any other side. That combination of toothless attack and leaky defence is a relegation formula if there ever was one.

The frustrating thing for Preston fans is that Alexander was brought in to change things, but the team has not responded yet. Nearly two months without a Championship win is a brutal run at any level, but at the bottom of the table it is the kind of form that makes staying up feel increasingly unlikely. The players look short of confidence, the goals are not coming, and opposing teams have quickly worked out that you can push Preston back and they will not punish you.

Sheffield United are heading in the opposite direction. Ten points from their last five Championship games, with wins over Wrexham and Bristol City either side of a draw with Derby. Wilder’s teams are always difficult to beat when they are set up properly, and the Blades are starting to get that defensive solidity back while also finding ways to nick goals. Brereton Diaz getting off the mark for the season is a significant boost too. A forward who finds his scoring touch at this point in the campaign could be very dangerous indeed.

Head-to-Head Record

Here is the interesting wrinkle. Preston actually did the double over Sheffield United last season, winning both fixtures 3-2. Before those results, the Lilywhites had failed to beat the Blades in eight meetings. So this is a fixture that has not historically gone Preston’s way, but last season they managed to turn it around twice, albeit in much more chaotic fashion than either manager would have wanted.

The 3-2 scorelines suggest these two have produced open, goal heavy games when they have met recently. Whether that happens again with Preston in their current state of confidence is another question entirely. The Blades will be wary of underestimating the hosts given that history, but the gap in form and league position this time around is considerably wider than it was this time last year.

Key Stats

  • Preston have the fewest goals scored in the Championship this season with just ten from thirteen games.
  • Sheffield United have collected ten points from their last five league matches, the form of a playoff contender.
  • Preston are six points from safety and have taken just one point under Alexander across four league outings.

Preston North End vs Sheffield United Betting Tips

The overall angle here is pretty clear. Preston are in genuine crisis, Sheffield United are on the rise, and even with three enforced changes the Blades have enough quality to expose a home side that has been shipping goals all season. The head to head adds a note of caution, but the gap in current form is too significant to ignore. I am siding with Sheffield United to take the points, and I think goals could be an interesting market given the way both sides have been set up recently.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Given Preston’s defensive record, which is the worst in the division, and Sheffield United’s ability to press and move the ball through lines, I am expecting goals here. Over 2.5 goals looks a solid shout. The Blades have been winning tight games recently, but facing a side this vulnerable at the back could open things up a bit.

Correct Score Prediction

Sheffield United to win 2-0 feels right. Preston have struggled to score all season and look short of the belief needed to find the net against a side set up as well as Wilder’s. The Blades should have enough to keep a clean sheet and grab a couple of goals to settle it comfortably.

Corners Prediction

Sheffield United will spend large portions of this game on the front foot, pushing Preston back and forcing them to defend in numbers. That kind of territorial dominance tends to generate a healthy corners count, particularly when the home side is defending deep and clearing into wide areas. Over 9.5 corners looks appealing here.

Cards Prediction

Preston are fighting for their lives at the bottom of the table, which means tackles will fly in from the off as they try to disrupt Sheffield United’s rhythm. Add in the fact that Wilder’s side have a reputation for pressing high and making life difficult, and you have the ingredients for a feisty night. Over 3.5 cards looks worth considering.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Ben Brereton Diaz scored the only goal against Wrexham on Friday and looks full of confidence. He is leading the Sheffield United attack and with Preston’s defensive record being what it is, there is every chance the Chilean forward gets on the scoresheet again here. He is the standout first goalscorer pick at decent odds given his recent form.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Match Result Sheffield United to Win
First Goalscorer Ben Brereton Diaz
Total Goals Over 2.5 Goals

Sheffield United winning with Brereton Diaz grabbing the opener in a game that produces three or more goals ties together the main themes of this preview and reflects the form gap between the two sides perfectly.

Final Match Prediction

Preston North End are in a desperate place right now. No wins in nearly two months, the worst attack and worst defence in the Championship, and a manager who has not yet found a way to stop the rot. Deepdale on a Tuesday night under the floodlights might produce an emotional crowd and a scrappy performance, but heart alone will not be enough against a Sheffield United side playing with confidence and purpose.

Wilder knows how to set up a team to win away from home, and even with Kitching suspended and Chong and Donovan unavailable, the Blades have the squad depth to handle it. Sheffield United to win 2-0 is the call, with Brereton Diaz continuing his good run of form in front of goal.
