Wetherby Tips

Wetherby Racecourse is located near the small town of Wetherby in West Yorkshire but also only 12 miles from Leeds city centre, which provides excellent transport links to and from the course.

Until fairly recently, Wetherby had only hosted National Hunt races but in 2015, flat racing was introduced alongside.

The Charlie Hall Chase is the main jumps event at the course but races are held all throughout the year.

Wetherby Racecourse

The course at Wetherby is left-handed and oval with a distance of 12 furlongs per circuit.

Due to the short run-in, the flat course has no sprint track and so races of five furlongs in distance feature a tight bend before heading onto the home straight.

The same course is used for jumps races which feature 9 fences around the circuit. The fences are known to be stiff which gives good jumpers an advantage.

Wetherby Feature Races

The majority of races at Wetherby take place during the National Hunt season from October through to April but since 2015, the course has hosted a handful of flat races throughout May and June.

Wetherby Racecourse gets its season underway with the Opening Meeting midway through October which is followed up by The bet365 Meeting over two days towards the end of October/early November. The bet365 Meeting features notable races such as The Charlie Hall Chase, the Wetherby Mares’ Hurdle and the West Yorkshire Hurdle.

The Yorkshire Christmas Meeting is another popular event at Wetherby and takes place over two days, starting on Boxing Day. Day one of the meeting features the Rowland Meyrick Handicap Chase and the highlight of day two is the Castleford Chase.

Lastly, the Towton Novices’ Chase takes place in February and is run over a distance of around 3 miles, featuring 19 fences. Mr Mulligan was the first winner of the race back in 1996 and went on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup the following year.
