Chelsea have long been regarded as one of the best football teams in the world and have a trophy cabinet to prove it. Just some of the major trophies Chelsea have picked up over the years include the UEFA Champions League (2012, 2021), the UEFA Europa League (2013, 2019), the FA Cup (1970, 1997, 2000, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2018), the English Premier League (2005, 2006, 2010, 2015, 2017) and several others.
With such high expectations at the club, any manager who takes charge understands the pressure they will be under to get results. Some have proven to be up for the job whereas others have lasted just weeks.
Chelsea are once again searching for a new permanent manager following the sacking of Liam Rosenior, just three months after his appointment.
The 41-year-old Englishman was dismissed after a disastrous run of form that saw Chelsea lose seven of their last eight matches in all competitions, including five consecutive Premier League defeats without scoring – the club’s worst league run in over a century.
Rosenior’s final game in charge ended in a 3-0 defeat to Brighton, after which he publicly criticised his players, describing their performance as “indefensible”. Despite backing from the club hierarchy as recently as the previous week, the scale of the downturn forced Chelsea into decisive action.
In an official statement, Chelsea confirmed the decision had not been taken lightly but cited “results and performances falling below the necessary standards” as the key reason for his departure.
Calum McFarlane has been placed in interim charge until the end of the season, beginning with the FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United. The club has stated it will now undertake a period of “self-reflection” as they look to make the right long-term managerial appointment.
Attention has quickly turned to who will take over at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea expected to conduct a thorough search for their next permanent manager.
A number of high-profile names have already been linked with the vacancy. Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola has emerged as the early frontrunner with bookmakers, while Fulham manager Marco Silva and Como head coach Cesc Fàbregas are also strongly in contention.
Elsewhere, experienced figures such as Diego Simeone, José Mourinho and Julian Nagelsmann have been mentioned as potential candidates, alongside Premier League-proven options like Oliver Glasner and Eddie Howe.
With the club hierarchy emphasising the importance of making the “right long-term appointment”, Chelsea are unlikely to rush the process, meaning speculation is expected to intensify in the coming weeks.

Andoni Iraola has installed himself as the early favourite to become the next Chelsea manager.
The Spanish coach has earned widespread praise for his work at Bournemouth, where he has implemented an aggressive, high-pressing style and significantly improved the club’s performances in the Premier League. His tactical approach and ability to develop players have made him an attractive option for Chelsea’s long-term vision.
Marco Silva is another strong contender following his consistent success with Fulham, while former Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fàbregas represents a more left-field but intriguing option given his growing reputation in management.
Further down the betting market, names such as Filipe Luís, Frank Lampard and Oliver Glasner remain in the mix, while elite-level managers like Diego Simeone and Julian Nagelsmann cannot be ruled out if Chelsea opt for a more experienced appointment.
With several credible candidates in the frame, the race to become the next Chelsea manager remains wide open as the club looks to steady the ship after yet another managerial change.
Chelsea have had 11 managers over the last 10 years, including some notable names such as Rafa Benitez, Jose Mourinho, Antonio Conte, Frank Lampard, Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter.
