Rangers are one of the most successful football clubs in world football with a world-record 55 Scottish League Championships, a record 28 Scottish League Cups, 34 Scottish Cups, and the 1972 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. But after a poor run of form and a string of disappointing performances, Russell Martin has been shown the door – leaving the Ibrox managers position wide open once again.
Russell Martin took charge of Rangers with a clear vision of bringing a more possession-based, attacking brand of football to Ibrox. After impressing at Southampton his appointment was seen as a progressive step by the Rangers board.
However, things didn’t go to plan. Despite flashes of attractive football, his team struggled with consistency. Rangers failed to get results, particularly in big games where fine margins made all the difference. Dropped points in key league matches and underwhelming performances in Europe quickly turned up the pressure.
Martin’s calm personality and modern coaching methods initially won him credit with supporters, but patience began to wear thin as results failed to improve. The gap to Celtic in the title race widened, and cup exits added to the frustration.
In the end, the board decided a change was needed to steady the ship and spark a reaction from the players. Martin’s tenure will likely be remembered as one that promised plenty but delivered too little in a results-driven environment where second best simply isn’t good enough.
Whenever the Rangers job becomes available, it immediately becomes one of the most talked-about vacancies in British football. Managing at Ibrox comes with huge pressure. Competing with Celtic for silverware, performing in Europe, and keeping one of the most passionate fanbases in football on side is no easy job. With Martin gone, the Rangers board now have a tough decision ahead. They’ll be looking for someone who can make an instant impact but also lay foundations for long-term success.
Steven Gerrard – Gerrard guided Rangers to their first league title in a decade during his first spell and knows the club inside out. His departure to Aston Villa still divides opinion among supporters, but there’s no denying he brought Rangers back to life.
Sean Dyche – The former Burnley and Everton manager has bags of Premier League experience and a reputation for building disciplined, hard-working sides. Dyche would bring structure to the squad, though it’s unclear whether the Rangers job would appeal to him at this stage of his career.
Danny Röhl – Röhl has caught the eye at Sheffield Wednesday with his sharp tactical approach. At just 35, he represents a younger generation of coaches, and his style could appeal to the board at Rangers.
Kevin Muscat – Muscat spent time at the club as a player and has since made a strong impression as a manager in Australia and Japan. His teams are known for attacking football, and his understanding of the club could work in his favour.
Derek McInnes – The experienced Kilmarnock boss is a name that always surfaces when top Scottish jobs come up. McInnes knows the league inside out and has earned respect for consistently getting the most out of his teams. He might not be the headline-grabbing choice, but he’d bring stability and organisation.
