World Cup 2030 Winner Odds: Can Spain Go Back-to-Back?

World Cup 2030 Winner Odds: Can Spain Go Back-to-Back?

The dust has barely settled on the 2026 World Cup, but attention has already turned towards the next tournament. Spain’s extra-time victory over Argentina in New York crowned them world champions for the second time, and the bookmakers have wasted no time installing La Roja as favourites to retain their crown in 2030.

With Spain also set to co-host the tournament alongside Portugal and Morocco, it’s easy to see why they head the early betting at 9/2. Home support has often played a huge role at major tournaments, and Spain will hope familiar surroundings can help them achieve something only a handful of nations have managed by successfully defending a World Cup title.

England, meanwhile, are priced at 8/1 after another campaign that promised so much before ending in disappointment. There is still plenty to be positive about, though, with a young squad that should be approaching its peak by the time the next tournament comes around.

Spain deserve to be favourites

Spain started the 2026 World Cup as favourites but briefly drifted behind France after a couple of unconvincing performances in the group stage. Once the knockout rounds arrived, however, they looked every inch the best team in the competition.

Luis de la Fuente’s side combined defensive discipline with technical quality throughout the tournament and eventually broke down a stubborn Argentina side in extra time to lift the trophy.

Speaking after the final, bet365’s Steve Freeth explained why Spain remain the team to beat four years from now.

“Spain did start this tournament as 9/2 favourites, but some mediocre early performances saw them overtaken by France. They certainly warmed to the task of being pre-tournament favourites and we are giving them that status again, especially with them as one of the co-hosts.”

That makes plenty of sense. Spain have one of the youngest elite squads in world football and many of the players who starred in 2026 should still be in their prime by the time 2030 arrives.

Hosting matches across Spain should also provide another boost. While the tournament will be shared with Portugal and Morocco, Spain are expected to benefit from huge home support throughout.

England have every chance at 8/1

England’s campaign ended in frustrating fashion once again, but there were enough positives to suggest they should be serious contenders in four years’ time.

Thomas Tuchel’s side showed what they were capable of during the tournament, producing some excellent attacking football and finishing with an unforgettable 6-4 victory over France in the third-place play-off.

Steve Freeth believes England remain firmly in the mix despite another near miss.

“Fellow co-hosts Portugal might benefit from the departure of Roberto Martinez, as well as Ronaldo, while we’re giving England an 8/1 quote as we wait for the dust to settle on another frustrating major tournament.”

At 8/1, England sit alongside Brazil in the betting, and it’s not difficult to understand why. Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and several other key players should all be entering the peak years of their careers by the next World Cup.

If Tuchel can build on what was learned in 2026, England should once again expect to challenge deep into the tournament.

France remain a major threat

France may have fallen short this summer, but few would be surprised if they are back competing for the biggest prize in 2030.

Kylian Mbappe remains one of the world’s outstanding players, while there is no shortage of young talent coming through the French system. With Zinedine Zidane widely expected to succeed Didier Deschamps before the next World Cup, there is every reason to expect another serious title challenge.

The early odds of 6/1 reflect that confidence.

Portugal could begin a new era

Portugal are third favourites at 7/1 despite another disappointing World Cup campaign.

Steve Freeth believes the next four years could mark the beginning of a fresh chapter.

“Portugal might benefit from the departure of Roberto Martinez, as well as Ronaldo.”

Cristiano Ronaldo has been one of the defining players of international football, but by 2030 the national team is expected to have fully moved into its next generation.

Playing on home soil should also be a significant advantage.

Don’t write off Argentina just yet

Argentina are available at 12/1 after falling just short in the final, although much will depend on whether Lionel Messi is still involved in any capacity.

Freeth admitted bookmakers underestimated the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner during the 2026 tournament.

“We’ve been made to pay by writing off Lionel Messi before this year’s showpiece, and maybe we’re taking a chance by going 12/1 about Argentina going one better in 2030, but surely even a superhuman Messi can’t continue to pull the strings at the ripe old age of 43.”

Whether Messi is still playing or not, Argentina continue to produce outstanding young talent and should remain one of the world’s strongest teams.

Lessons from the 2026 World Cup

Looking back at the tournament, Freeth revealed that Portugal proved to be the bookmakers’ biggest outright loser after attracting significant support before being eliminated by eventual champions Spain.

England’s thrilling 3-2 win over Mexico also proved costly for bookmakers, with Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane both finding the net in one of the betting stories of the tournament.

There were also memorable markets away from the outright winner. Rodri recovered from a slow start to claim the Golden Ball, Pau Cubarsi justified growing support for the Young Player award, while Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon collected the Golden Glove after keeping seven clean sheets.

All of those performances helped underline why Spain finished deserving world champions.

World Cup 2030 outright odds

The current outright market already offers an interesting early look ahead.

  • Spain – 9/2
  • France – 6/1
  • Portugal – 7/1
  • Brazil – 8/1
  • England – 8/1
  • Germany – 10/1
  • Argentina – 12/1
  • Morocco – 25/1
  • Netherlands – 25/1
  • Belgium – 33/1

Early value

With four years still to go, plenty will change before the opening match kicks off. Injuries, emerging stars and managerial changes will all shape the betting over the coming years.

Even so, Spain at 9/2 looks a fair starting point given they are reigning world champions and will enjoy home support throughout much of the tournament. England at 8/1 also catches the eye. While another World Cup ended in disappointment, the core of this squad remains young enough to improve, and if Tuchel can turn potential into silverware, England should once again be among the leading contenders in 2030.
