Maritimo
Santa ClaraMaritimo are in genuine trouble. One point above the relegation zone with nine games gone, and a 5-0 hammering at Vitoria de Guimaraes still fresh in the memory, Mitchell van der Gaag’s side desperately need something from this one. Another defeat would drag them right back into the dogfight at the bottom, and with only one win in their last nine competitive matches, the pressure is mounting quickly in Funchal.
Santa Clara arrive having seen their unbeaten league run ended by Benfica, and they also went out of the cup to lower division Mafra, so there is a bit of a wobble to address for Petit’s men too. But fourth place, 18 points, and one of the meanest defences in the Primeira Liga tells you everything about the quality of the side heading to Madeira this weekend.
This Primeira Liga fixture takes place at the Estadio do Maritimo in Funchal, on the island of Madeira. It is a match with very different stakes for the two sides, with Maritimo scrapping to climb away from the drop zone and Santa Clara looking to reassert themselves among the top four after a difficult few days.
Both managers have selection decisions to make, with a few key players either doubtful or missing entirely.
Van der Gaag looks set to line up with the same general shape that faced Sporting in midweek, with Butzke leading the line after his consolation goal at the Alvalade. Henrique at left back adds an interesting subplot given his history with the visitors.
Maritimo: Vieites; Igor Juliao, Correia, Szalai, Henrique; Andrade, Guzzo; Bouzaidi, Alani, Tejon; Butzke
Petit’s biggest headache is whether Paciencia is fit enough to start. If not, Fernando steps in again despite his post match red card antics, with Tavares returning to bolster the midfield after his suspension.
Santa Clara: Franca; Soares, Pacheco, Fernandes, Romao; Tavares, Borges, Ribeiro; Vinicius Lopes, Fernando, Brenner
Maritimo started the season in decent nick, winning their opening two fixtures against Casa Pia and Famalicao. Since then it has completely fallen apart. Seven league games without a win, picking up just two draws and losing five, and that run includes being turned over 5-0 by Vitoria de Guimaraes last weekend. That is not a blip, that is a crisis of confidence and defensive organisation. They have conceded 19 league goals already, which is the second worst record in the entire division.
The midweek cup exit to Sporting hurt as well, even though they showed a bit more fight in that one. Butzke’s late goal gave the scoreline a bit of respectability, but a 2-1 loss at the Alvalade is still a loss, and it means Maritimo have won just once in their last nine competitive outings across all competitions. The home form is particularly alarming. Three games at the Estadio do Maritimo without a win since that opening day victory.
Santa Clara’s recent form is a bit more complicated to read. They were excellent for the first chunk of the season, genuinely one of the stories of the early campaign, but they have now lost their last two in all competitions after going out of the cup to Mafra from the lower leagues and then letting Benfica come from behind to beat them 2-1 in the Azores. That said, the underlying quality is still there. Only Porto have conceded fewer goals in the top flight this season, and their away record in the league has been genuinely impressive, winning twice and drawing twice in four road trips.
This is where it gets interesting for Santa Clara fans, because the trip to Funchal has historically been a nightmare for them. Looking across their recent meetings in both the Primeira Liga and Liga 2, the visitors have won just once in their last nine visits to Maritimo, losing five of those encounters. Maritimo’s home ground, with its passionate island atmosphere, tends to be a difficult place for Santa Clara to get a result.
So while Santa Clara are the better side on paper right now, and while the league table strongly suggests they should be taking points here, history says it is rarely straightforward when they make this trip across to Madeira.
Maritimo need this badly, and desperation on home soil can make them scrappy and hard to play against. But their defensive numbers are genuinely alarming, and Santa Clara have the quality in the final third to exploit gaps. The visitors’ away defensive record this season gives me real confidence they can control this game, even if the head to head record adds a layer of uncertainty. My angle here is on Santa Clara getting a narrow win in a game that sees at least a couple of goals.
If Paciencia is fit enough to start, he is the obvious pick as Santa Clara’s leading scorer, but given his doubt, Fernando feels like the safer shout. He stepped in against Benfica, netted from the spot, and will be motivated to make an impression. Fernando to score first at a decent price makes plenty of sense.
Maritimo will need to push forward given the position they are in, and Santa Clara are comfortable sitting back and hitting teams on the break when they have the lead. Expect Maritimo to be launching balls into the box late on if they are chasing the game, which should help push the corners tally up. Over 9.5 corners looks a reasonable shout in this one.
This is a match with a decent amount of tension to it. Maritimo are desperate and have shown frustration in recent weeks, and Santa Clara have had a couple of disciplinary incidents themselves, with Tavares only just back from a ban and Fernando’s post match red card at Benfica showing the squad’s temperature is running a bit high. Over 3.5 cards in this match looks worth considering.
Maritimo are leaking goals for fun right now, and Santa Clara have shown they can score on the road. The home side also need to score, which means they cannot afford to just sit back and park the bus. Over 2.5 goals appeals here given Maritimo’s defensive fragility and the attacking threat Santa Clara carry even without Paciencia at full fitness.
Maritimo have managed to score at least once in most of their home games despite their poor overall form, and their pride alone means they will be giving everything going forward in front of their own supporters. Santa Clara’s defence has been impressive, but conceding seven in nine games means they are not completely watertight. BTTS yes feels like a fair call here.
A 1-2 scoreline to Santa Clara captures the most likely shape of this game. Maritimo nicking one to give the home crowd something to shout about, but the visitors showing enough quality and defensive solidity to edge it. That scoreline reflects both Santa Clara’s superiority and Maritimo’s ability to cause problems at home even in poor form.
| Market | Selection |
|---|---|
| Match Result | Santa Clara to Win |
| Both Teams To Score | Yes |
| Total Cards | Over 3.5 |
Santa Clara have the quality to win this, Maritimo’s desperation makes it likely they contribute a goal, and the pressure on the home side in a must not lose situation should generate enough bookings to land the cards leg.
Maritimo’s need for points makes them genuinely dangerous at home, and the head to head record tells you Santa Clara have struggled in Funchal over the years. Van der Gaag will have his players wound up and ready to scrap for every inch of the pitch. But a football team cannot run purely on adrenaline when the defensive fundamentals are as broken as Maritimo’s are right now.
Santa Clara are the better organised, more consistent side, and their away defensive record this season backs that up with real numbers. Petit’s team will be stung by two consecutive defeats and looking to put down a marker. I think they edge it in a tight game. Maritimo 1-2 Santa Clara.
