Who do you think will win?

Manchester City have been absolutely ruthless this season, and that is before you even factor in the chaos of the Manchester derby last Sunday. Erling Haaland’s goal, controversial as anything you will see in a Premier League season, handed City a 1-0 win over United in a match that will be debated for weeks. Six straight wins across all competitions is the target now for Enzo Maresca’s side, and they have a chance to tick that box against Championship opposition here in the EFL Cup third round.

Norwich City arrive at the Etihad as massive underdogs, and history gives them very little to cling onto. The Canaries have faced City 72 times down the years and won just 10 of those meetings. More brutally, they have conceded 14 goals and scored none across their last three meetings with the Citizens. That is a sobering set of numbers heading into a cup tie at one of the most formidable venues in English football.

Manchester City vs Norwich City Match Details

This EFL Cup third round tie takes place at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester. City come in as the reigning League Cup champions having beaten Arsenal 2-0 in last season’s final, and they are nine-time winners of this competition overall. Norwich have lifted the trophy twice in their history, but those triumphs feel like a very long time ago for a club currently operating in the Championship.

Team News

Maresca has a couple of enforced absences to deal with, though he was always likely to rotate heavily for this fixture regardless. Norwich arrive with four players ruled out, all with knee injuries, which will limit Philippe Clement’s options going forward.

  • Phil Foden is suspended after picking up a red card in the Manchester derby
  • Jeremy Doku is a major doubt with a calf problem and is unlikely to be risked here
  • Geronimo Rulli and Allan are both in line to make their debuts for City
  • Vitor Reis, Rico Lewis, Mateo Kovacic, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Iliman Ndiaye could all come into the starting side
  • Gabriel Forsyth, Mirko Topic, Ali Ahmed and Lucien Mahovo are all out for Norwich with knee injuries
  • Mohamed Toure, who has five goals in seven appearances this season, could drop to the bench for the visitors

Predicted Lineups

Maresca is going to ring the changes here, there is no doubt about that. With Foden suspended and Doku doubtful, plus a Champions League campaign already up and running after a 2-0 win over Porto, the City boss will protect his key men and hand opportunities to squad players. Rulli gets the nod in goal, with Kovacic and Bouaddi offering experience and youth in midfield, and Allan getting a chance to show what he can do in a City shirt.

For Norwich, Daniel Grimshaw comes back in between the sticks for his second cup appearance of the campaign. Clement will likely set up in a way that is organised and hard to break down, though the quality gap between these two squads is significant even with City making wholesale changes.

  • Manchester City: Rulli; Khusanov, Reis, Guehi, Lewis; Kovacic, Bouaddi; Allan, Ndiaye, Semenyo; Haaland
  • Norwich City: Grimshaw; Stacey, McConville, Cordoba, Chrisene; Wright, Mattsson; Maghoma, Schwartau, Musaba; Makama

Recent Form

Manchester City’s form has been exceptional. Four wins from four in the Premier League puts them second in the table on 12 points, and the 2-0 win over Porto in the Champions League opener last week showed that the quality is there across competitions. The derby win, however divisive the circumstances, adds another notch to what has been a near-perfect start to the campaign. Even with a rotated side, City at the Etihad is a daunting proposition for any opponent.

Norwich are in a more complicated place. They have won three and lost four of their seven Championship games, sitting 12th on nine points. The 4-3 defeat to Middlesbrough last time out is the kind of result that will have hurt, and it leaves Clement with questions to answer about defensive solidity. That said, the Canaries did beat MK Dons 4-1 and Cardiff City 2-1 in the previous two rounds of this competition, so they know how to get through a cup tie.

Four wins from their last six in all competitions tells you Norwich are not a pushover at this level. But Championship form against League Cup lower-tier opposition is a very different thing to walking into the Etihad and facing a City squad with Haaland still leading the line. This is a step up of enormous proportions for Clement’s group.

Head-to-Head Record

The head to head record is about as lopsided as they come at this level of football. Across 72 meetings, City have won 39, drawn 23 and lost just 10. But it is the recent numbers that really tell the story. Norwich have conceded 14 goals and scored absolutely nothing in their last three encounters with City, with the most recent of those a 4-0 Premier League shellacking back in February 2022. That is four years of hurt, and there is nothing in the recent record to suggest the Canaries are about to turn the tide.

Even in a cup competition where anything can technically happen, the historical evidence is clear. City dominate this fixture, and they do so heavily. Norwich will need to produce something completely out of the ordinary to change that narrative.

Key Stats

  • Norwich have scored zero goals and conceded 14 in their last three meetings with Manchester City
  • City are unbeaten in five games across all competitions this season, winning each of those five
  • Mohamed Toure has five goals in seven appearances for Norwich this term, but looks set to start from the bench

Manchester City vs Norwich City Betting Tips

This fixture has comfortable City win written all over it. Even with a rotated squad, the quality gap is enormous, and the historical record of Norwich failing to even register against City in recent years makes it very hard to back anything other than a big home win. The interesting angles are around the margins rather than the result itself.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

City have been free-scoring all season and Norwich have conceded 14 in three games against them without reply. Even with a changed lineup, the home side have the attacking firepower to put this to bed early. Over 2.5 goals looks a strong call here, and honestly, over 3.5 is not without merit either.

Cards Prediction

Norwich will need to work hard and press to stay in this game, and that kind of effort against a technical City side often leads to frustration and cynical fouls. Expect a few bookings for the visitors as they try to disrupt City’s rhythm. Over 3.5 cards in this match looks a reasonable shout.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Erling Haaland is starting, and that is really all you need to know. The Norwegian is the focal point of the City attack regardless of how many changes are made around him, and with Norwich having shipped goals heavily to City in recent meetings, backing Haaland as the first scorer at a decent price is the obvious play.

Corners Prediction

City will dominate the ball and press forward in waves against a Norwich side that will sit deep and defend. That combination tends to produce a high corner count for the home side. Over 9.5 corners in the match is worth considering, with City likely to generate a large chunk of them from their sustained attacking play.

Correct Score Prediction

Given the historical precedent of Norwich failing to score against City, and the home side being in red-hot form even with changes, a 3-0 City win feels like the most logical outcome. Clean sheet for the hosts, comfortable progression for Maresca’s team.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Norwich have not scored in their last three meetings with City, and while Toure has been sharp this season, he is likely to start on the bench. With four injury absentees and a significant step up in quality, the Canaries are going to find it very difficult to get on the scoresheet. BTTS No is the call here.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
First Goalscorer Erling Haaland
Both Teams To Score No
Total Goals Over 2.5

Haaland scoring, City keeping a clean sheet and the goals flowing in one direction is the perfect summary of what this fixture has historically looked like, and the current form of both sides gives you no reason to expect anything different.

Final Match Prediction

This is about as clear-cut a cup tie as you will get at the third round stage. Manchester City, even with a rotated squad and two key absentees, are simply a different class to a Norwich side that has struggled in the Championship and has nothing in the head to head record to draw encouragement from. Maresca will be keen to maintain momentum and blood some squad players, but with Haaland still spearheading the attack, the goals will come.

City to win 3-0 is the prediction, and it would take a monumental upset for Norwich to get anything from this one. The Canaries have heart and some decent cup form this season, but the Etihad on a Thursday evening against the reigning League Cup champions is a different world entirely.
