Who do you think will win?

Five games into the new La Liga season and Villarreal are still waiting for their first win. That is not a sentence anyone would have predicted back in August given that the Yellow Submarine finished third in Spain last season with 72 points. But here we are, and things are getting uncomfortable in the Villarreal camp. Four straight defeats across all competitions, a Champions League opener that ended in a 3-2 loss to Borussia Dortmund, and a place in the relegation zone. The pressure is very real.

The thing is, Malaga are not exactly flying either. The White and Sky Blues are one place above their visitors in 17th, having secured promotion through the Segunda Division playoffs last season and now finding top flight football an entirely different proposition. Two goals scored in five games is a serious problem. This one has the makings of a genuinely scrappy, tense bottom half encounter between two sides absolutely desperate to get points on the board.

Malaga vs Villarreal Match Details

This La Liga fixture takes place at Estadio La Rosaleda in Malaga, a ground that has not hosted top flight football for some time, and the home crowd will be hoping to see their side finally register a first win back in the big time. Villarreal make the trip south looking to end what has become a deeply worrying run of form for a side with genuine European pedigree.

Team News

Malaga are carrying a fair few injuries heading into this one, which is far from ideal given where they sit in the table. Villarreal have fewer concerns but are not completely without issues either.

  • Julen Lopete, Fernando Calero, Moussa Diarra, Diego Murillo and Aaron Ochoa are all out for Malaga through injury
  • Adam Aznou, Carlos Dotor and Alex Pastor are all doubts after missing the Celta Vigo draw through illness and will need to be assessed
  • Villarreal are without Juan Foyth who is sidelined with an Achilles injury
  • Villarreal are otherwise in good shape with no further significant absentees reported

Predicted Lineups

For Malaga, gaffer Juan Francisco Funes will likely keep faith with a front line built around Chupe, the 22 year old who has grabbed the only goal of his side so far this season. Joaquin Munoz and David Larrubia are expected to feature in the attacking areas, with Malaga lining up in a shape that tries to stay compact and dangerous on the counter given their lack of firepower in open play.

Villarreal head coach Inigo Perez is not expected to tear things up after the Betis defeat. Gerard Moreno keeps his starting berth, Nicolas Pepe and Santi Comesana continue in midfield, and Peter Gulacsi starts in goal. The shape is likely to look organised and purposeful, with Mikautadze alongside Moreno in attack.

  • Malaga: Herrero; Rafita, Recio, Galilea, Salinas; Merino; Larrubia, Martinez, Lorenzo, Munoz; Chupe
  • Villarreal: Gulacsi; Mourino, Navarro, Veiga, Romero; Pepe, Gueye, Comesana, Buchanan; G Moreno, Mikautadze

Recent Form

Malaga have drawn three of their last four league games, which tells you a lot about where they are right now as a team. They are not being blown away, they are not capitulating, but they are also not finding a way to win. The 1-1 draw with Celta Vigo is a decent point on paper but their attacking output this season is genuinely alarming. Two goals from five games is a number that will have Funes losing sleep. They are clearly set up to be hard to beat first and foremost, but if you cannot score, draws eventually become defeats as the season wears on.

Villarreal’s trajectory has gone in completely the wrong direction. After opening with draws against Racing de Santander and Atletico Madrid, which looked respectable enough, they have since lost three consecutive league matches against Alaves, Deportivo La Coruna and Real Betis. Add in that Champions League defeat to Dortmund and you are looking at a side that has not won anything in their last four outings. For a team that finished third last season with such a strong points tally, this is a genuinely alarming drop in output.

The big question with Villarreal is whether this is a blip or the start of something more concerning. They have quality in that squad, no question. Moreno, Pepe, Mikautadze. Those are not players who go this long without clicking into gear very often. A fixture against a Malaga side with two goals all season might just be the moment the dam breaks.

Head-to-Head Record

These two sides have met 32 times throughout their history and Villarreal lead the overall record with 12 wins compared to Malaga’s 10. The Yellow Submarine have been particularly dominant in the more recent encounters, winning five of the last seven meetings between the clubs. That run of recent dominance is worth noting when you are trying to weigh up which way this one goes.

The last time they actually played each other was back in April 2018, and on that occasion it was Malaga who came out 1-0 winners. That is a long gap between fixtures, so the head to head history is useful context but perhaps not the sharpest tool in the box here given how much both squads have changed since then.

Key Stats

  • Malaga have scored just twice in five La Liga games, the second worst attacking record in the division
  • Villarreal have lost four consecutive matches across all competitions and are still searching for their first win of the 2026-27 season
  • Villarreal have won five of the last seven head to head meetings with Malaga across their history

Malaga vs Villarreal Betting Tips

The angle here is pretty straightforward when you strip it back. Two struggling sides, one with more quality in the tank than their current form suggests, the other yet to find their feet back in the top flight. Villarreal feel overdue a win and this feels like the fixture where things might finally click, even if it is not going to be a thriller. Goals are likely to be at a premium.

Correct Score Prediction

With Malaga’s toothless attack and Villarreal’s need to grind out a result, a narrow 1-0 away win looks the most likely outcome. The Yellow Submarine have enough quality up front to nick one, and the home side simply have not shown they can find the net consistently enough to push back.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Gerard Moreno is the standout pick here. He is an experienced La Liga forward who has been kept quiet so far this season but who thrives against lower block defences, and a Malaga side sitting deep to protect a clean sheet could suit him perfectly. He is the most likely candidate to open the scoring for Villarreal.

Cards Prediction

This should be a tense, low stakes affair between two sides grinding for points near the bottom, and those kinds of games tend to produce niggly fouls and frustrated tackles. Expect a few bookings as the game tightens up, particularly in midfield where both teams will be scrapping for every inch. Over 3.5 cards looks a reasonable shout.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Under 2.5 goals feels like the call here without much debate. Malaga have barely scored all season and Villarreal, while underperforming, are unlikely to suddenly hit four or five. A cagey one goal game is very much on the cards and the under market looks well priced given what both sides have shown so far.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

No on BTTS. Malaga have scored just twice in five games and there is not a lot of evidence to suggest that changes here against a Villarreal side that, when they are functioning even half decently, keeps things solid at the back. Back Villarreal to keep a clean sheet rather than expecting Malaga to find a way through.

Corners Prediction

Villarreal are likely to dominate possession and push forward in search of the opener, which should generate a reasonable volume of corners as Malaga sit in and defend. Back over 9.5 corners for the match, with Villarreal taking the lion’s share as they pile on the pressure looking for that elusive first win.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Match Result Villarreal Win
Both Teams To Score No
Total Goals Under 2.5

A narrow Villarreal win with Malaga kept scoreless and the game staying under 2.5 goals all points to the same tight, controlled away victory and those three picks complement each other perfectly.

Final Match Prediction

Villarreal have been poor this season but the quality is in there, and a home side with two goals in five games is about as gentle a fixture as they could ask for to get back on track. Moreno or Mikautadze will likely nick one in the second half, Malaga will huff and puff but struggle to create anything meaningful, and Perez will finally get the three points his side so desperately need.

Predicted score: Malaga 0-1 Villarreal.
