CompetitionUEFA Europa League
Who do you think will win?

Crystal Palace have done something genuinely remarkable over the past eighteen months. Conference League winners. The third English club to lift that trophy. The first side in nearly four decades to win a major European honour in their debut continental campaign. Oliver Glasner built something special at Selhurst Park, and now the Eagles get to test themselves at a higher level entirely, stepping into the Europa League for the first time in the club’s history.

The problem is, the transition to life under Pierre Sage has been bumpy. Two Premier League defeats at home already, just eleven top flight points on home soil across all of 2026, and a squad still working out what it looks like under a new manager. Lech Poznan will not be arriving in south London as tourists. They are Polish champions, Europa League qualifiers, and they have a striker with a European pedigree that demands respect. This one matters, and it is far from a foregone conclusion.

Crystal Palace vs Lech Poznan Match Details

The game takes place at Selhurst Park in the opening round of the UEFA Europa League group stage. It is Palace’s first ever Europa League fixture, a landmark moment for a club that only entered European football last season, and it comes against a Lech Poznan side that earned their place the hard way through qualifying rounds rather than domestic league position alone.

Team News

Sage has a few headaches to manage going into this one. Some familiar names are still missing, and there is at least one selection call that could go either way depending on fitness.

  • Dean Henderson remains out injured
  • Chadi Riad is unavailable through injury
  • Jean-Philippe Mateta is out injured
  • Eddie Nketiah is a doubt and may not be risked
  • Ismaila Sarr has been sidelined with a groin problem but could return for this one, which would be a massive boost given his nine European goals last season

For Lech, Niels Frederiksen is also dealing with absentees. Daniel Hakans, Alex Douglas and Antoni Kozubal join long term casualty Ali Gholizadeh on the sidelines, so the Poles are not arriving at full strength either.

Predicted Lineups

After making eight changes for the EFL Cup win over Middlesbrough, Sage is expected to put out something much closer to his best available eleven here. The Europa League debut deserves that. The big question is whether Sarr is fit enough to start or whether Sage eases him back from the bench.

Crystal Palace are likely to line up as: Benitez; Mingueza, Richards, Ahanor; Khalaily, Timber, Wharton, Chilwell; Kamada, Pino; Strand Larsen.

Lech Poznan should set up as: Lis; Pereira, Skrzypczak, Monka, Gurgul; Murawski, Berggren; Walemark, Rodriguez, Sayyadmanesh; Ishak.

Recent Form

Palace’s domestic form under Sage has been a concern. Back to back Premier League defeats at Selhurst Park, the most recent being a 3-2 loss to Ipswich that will have stung given they conceded the winner late on. Sitting sixteenth in the table this early in the season is not where a club with European ambitions wants to be, and Sage will know that a positive result on Thursday would do wonders for confidence and for his own position in the dressing room.

That said, there is context worth noting. The EFL Cup win over Middlesbrough, even with a rotated side, showed the squad has depth and that players further down the pecking order can do a job. And last season at Selhurst Park in Europe, Palace were formidable once they got going, going unbeaten across their final six home European fixtures after a opening night stumble against AEK Larnaca. The European atmosphere at Selhurst suits them.

Lech come in with strong recent form of their own. Five wins from seven in the Ekstraklasa is a solid return, though they did slip up last weekend, losing 2-1 to Gornik Zabzre despite leading with fifteen minutes to go. That kind of late collapse is worth filing away. Before reaching the Europa League proper, they dismantled KI Klaksvik and then absolutely battered Thun 7-0 in Poznan, which is a scoreline that makes you sit up and take notice. A 2-2 draw in the second leg was academic, and Frederiksen’s side look genuinely dangerous going forward.

Head-to-Head Record

These two clubs have never met before, so there is no historical record to lean on here. This is completely uncharted territory for both sets of supporters and both coaching staffs, which arguably levels the playing field slightly when it comes to tactical preparation.

What we do know is that Selhurst Park has been a fortress in European football for Palace at their best, and Lech have never faced Premier League opposition in a competitive fixture. Both factors are relevant, but neither is decisive on its own.

Key Stats

  • Ismaila Sarr scored nine European goals for Palace last season. If he is fit and starts, he transforms what the Eagles can do going forward.
  • Pontus Walemark hit six goals in six qualifying matches this summer for Lech. That is a frightening return for a wide player and he deserves serious attention defensively.
  • Mikael Ishak has scored a remarkable 18 goals in 28 major European appearances for Lech Poznan. A genuine big game striker with a proven record at this level.

Crystal Palace vs Lech Poznan Betting Tips

This is a tough opener to call with any real confidence. Palace have European experience from last season and home advantage, but they are unsettled domestically and still adapting to a new manager. Lech are well drilled, in decent form, and carry genuine goal threat. The smart money is not on a Palace cruise here.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Both sides have attacking quality and neither defence looks completely watertight right now. Lech scored seven in a single leg against Thun, and Palace have been conceding in domestic games. Under 2.5 feels risky here. Back over 2.5 goals.

Correct Score Prediction

A competitive, fairly open game with both sides finding the net feels like the most likely scenario. A 1-1 draw reflects the balance of the fixture and the uncertainty around Palace under their new gaffer. That is the call.

Cards Prediction

European first legs between sides who do not know each other well can get feisty as teams work each other out physically. Lech play with intensity and pace going forward, which tends to generate fouls in transition. Over 3.5 cards looks a reasonable shout for this one.

First Goalscorer Prediction

If Sarr is passed fit and starts, he is the obvious pick given his nine goals in last season’s European run. He knows what scoring in Europe for this club feels like, and he will be desperate to make an impact on return from injury. If he is available, take Ismaila Sarr as first goalscorer.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Lech have goals in them, as the qualifying rounds demonstrated convincingly. Palace have also been leaking at the back domestically. Both teams to score looks well supported here and is the call.

Corners Prediction

Palace will look to get bodies forward and dominate possession against a side they will consider beatable at home. Lech press high and play on the front foot too. Expect plenty of attacking play from both sides pushing wide, which should generate a healthy corners count. Over 9.5 corners is the pick.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Both Teams To Score Yes
Total Goals Over 2.5
Total Corners Over 9.5

An open, attack minded game between two sides with genuine forward quality supports all three of these picks landing in the same match.

Final Match Prediction

Crystal Palace deserve enormous credit for what they achieved last season, and the Europa League represents an exciting new chapter. But Sage is still finding his feet, the squad has injury concerns in key areas, and Lech Poznan are a well organised, goals happy side who have earned their place at this level. This is not a side Palace can simply turn up and beat on reputation alone.

The most likely outcome feels like a share of the spoils. A 1-1 draw gives Palace a point on their Europa League debut and keeps them in a decent position heading into the away leg, while reflecting just how competitive Lech will be across both fixtures. Prediction: Crystal Palace 1-1 Lech Poznan.
