KickoffFriday 18 September 2026, 7:45pm
VenueStade Louis II
CompetitionFrench Ligue 1
Who do you think will win?

There is something genuinely intriguing about this one. Monaco are purring near the top of Ligue 1 under a new manager who has made a bright start, and Lens are rocking after sacking their own gaffer just four games into the season. A Principality showdown between a side building real momentum and one trying to rediscover its identity under caretaker charge. That kind of contrast makes for compelling viewing, regardless of which badge you follow.

Add in the fact that Lens won this exact fixture 4-1 last season, and you have got a proper storyline. Monaco will want revenge. Lens will want to prove last year was no fluke. Stade Louis II should be crackling.

Monaco vs Lens Match Details

This Ligue 1 fixture takes place at Stade Louis II in the Principality. Monaco come in sitting second in the table on goal difference behind Lille, while Lens find themselves down in tenth after a chaotic opening to their campaign. Both sides have unfinished business and something to prove, which makes this a compelling midweek encounter in the French top flight.

Team News

Monaco are carrying a fair few injury concerns heading into this one, which could force Filipe Luis into some careful selection thinking. Lens are similarly stretched, particularly after their managerial upheaval this week.

  • Takumi Minamino is out with a cruciate ligament tear
  • Ansu Fati is nursing a sore calf
  • Anis Sobeir is absent with an ankle problem
  • Folarin Balogun is a doubt due to a knock
  • Edan Diop has a thigh strain
  • Jordan Teze and Mamadou Coulibaly are both potentially sidelined
  • For Lens, Jhoanner Chavez and Yacine Titraoui have sore thighs
  • Regis Gurtner and Samson Baidoo are doubts with hamstring complaints
  • Maik Nawrocki is out with a cruciate ligament injury
  • Saud Abdulhamid is questionable with a knock
  • Souleymane Sangnan returns from suspension

Predicted Lineups

Monaco look set to line up in their familiar shape with Hradecky in goal behind a back four of Vanderson, Dier, Salisu and Nazinho. Camara and Zakaria should anchor the midfield, with Detourbet, Abline and Golovin operating in the more advanced positions. Paris Brunner leads the line after a sharp start to the season with three Ligue 1 goals already to his name.

Lens under caretaker Yannick Cahuzac are expected to go with Risser in goal and a back three of Gradit, Antonio and Udol. Aguilar, Haidara, Bulatovic and Hazard provide the width and engine in midfield, with Thauvin supporting the front two of Sima and Ivanovic, both of whom got on the scoresheet last time out.

Recent Form

Monaco looked nailed on for a perfect start before last weekend caught up with them. A 1-1 draw at home to Strasbourg ended their winning streak and dropped them behind Lille on goal difference, but the bigger picture still looks very healthy. Filipe Luis has this squad well organised defensively. Only two goals conceded in four league games is a genuinely impressive return, and the fact that Monaco have picked up points even when conceding first tells you something about the character in this group.

Lens are a more difficult read right now. Four Ligue 1 games in and they have already changed manager, which tells you everything about the mood inside the club. Dino Toppmoller paid the price for a defensive record that has seen them ship goals in every competitive game this season. And yet, there is clearly plenty of attacking quality in this squad. Eight league goals from four games puts them joint second in Ligue 1 for scoring, and their Champions League comeback win over Slavia Prague showed real guts. The problem is you simply cannot concede as freely as Lens have been doing and expect to keep a manager in a job.

Cahuzac takes the reins with two unbeaten results immediately behind him across all competitions, but managing the step up to a proper Ligue 1 test against a well drilled Monaco side is a very different challenge. The bounce factor could play a role, but so could the defensive instability that got the last manager sacked.

Head-to-Head Record

This is where Monaco fans might feel a slight twinge of nerves. Lens have been excellent at Stade Louis II in recent years, going unbeaten in five of their last six visits to the Principality. Last season they came here and absolutely hammered Monaco 4-1, which is not the kind of result you shake off easily when the two sides meet again. It will be well remembered in the home dressing room.

That said, Monaco have had some success against Lens over the years and can win consecutive competitive games against them in the same calendar year for the first time since 2014 if they take all three points here. There is clearly motivation on both sides to use the head to head record as fuel.

Key Stats

  • Monaco have conceded just two league goals all season, the joint fewest in Ligue 1
  • Lens have missed 15 big chances already this season, more than any other side in the division
  • Monaco are unbeaten in all their home league matches played in September since 2023

Monaco vs Lens Betting Tips

The overall angle here is that Monaco’s defensive solidity is the story of their season so far, and they are up against a Lens side that is firing plenty of shots but wasting a remarkable number of clear cut opportunities. A tight, controlled home win feels like the most logical outcome, with goals likely but nothing like the wild scoreline we saw when these two last met here.

Correct Score Prediction

Monaco to win 2-1. Lens have enough in attack to get something, but their wastefulness in front of goal and Monaco’s defensive organisation should keep this from getting away from the hosts. A one goal margin feels right for how these two are playing right now.

Cards Prediction

With Lens coming in under caretaker management, a touch of desperation and disorganisation could creep in, and Monaco’s clever pressing style tends to draw fouls. Back over three cards in this one. The intensity of a fixture with this much riding on it for both clubs should see the bookings tick along nicely.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Over 2.5 goals looks the right call. Lens have been involved in high scoring games all season and Monaco, despite their defensive record, have still been contributing to open matches. The combination of Lens attacking ambition and their defensive fragility should ensure there is enough in the goals column for this to land.

Corners Prediction

Over 9.5 corners is worth a look. Monaco will look to work wide through Vanderson and Nazinho, and Lens push forward with real width through their wing backs. Both sides attack with purpose and create deliveries into the box, which tends to generate a solid corners count across 90 minutes.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Yes. Lens have scored in every competitive game this season and their front two of Sima and Ivanovic both looked sharp last time out. Monaco are no defensive fortress when pushed, having already conceded twice. Back both teams to find the net here.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Paris Brunner is the pick. Three Ligue 1 goals already this season makes him the standout threat in the Monaco attack, and with Balogun potentially absent he is the clear focal point of the forward line. He has the knack of getting into the right positions and this feels like a game where Monaco get at Lens early.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Match Result Monaco Win
Both Teams To Score Yes
First Goalscorer Paris Brunner

Monaco winning while both teams score fits the profile of this game perfectly, and Brunner as first goalscorer at a decent price ties it all together with a natural narrative.

Final Match Prediction

Monaco 2-1 Lens is the call. The hosts have the better defensive structure, the home advantage and a point to prove after dropping points for the first time last week. Lens will cause problems because they always seem to find a way to score, but their big chance conversion has been woeful and a Monaco side this well drilled at the back should be able to absorb pressure and make it count at the other end.

Filipe Luis gets his side back to winning ways. Lens show flashes of their attacking quality but ultimately the defensive shakiness that cost their previous manager his job proves costly again. A competitive game, decided by a goal, and Monaco take three points that put them back on top of Ligue 1.
