Who do you think will win?

Six games into the Eredivisie season and ADO Den Haag have a single point to show for it. One point. From six matches back in the top flight after five years away. That number alone tells you everything you need to know about the size of the problem Robin Peter is trying to solve, and it makes this weekend’s visit from Cambuur about as urgent as it gets for a side that cannot afford to drift any further adrift at the bottom of the table.

Cambuur arrive on the back of their first proper performance of the campaign, a 3-0 dismantling of NEC Nijmegen that finally gave Johan Plat something to work with. They were almost as bad as Den Haag for the first five weeks of the season, but momentum in football can shift fast. Right now it is pointing firmly in the visitors’ direction.

ADO Den Haag vs Cambuur Match Details

This Eredivisie fixture takes place at the Werktalent Stadion in The Hague, bringing together two promoted sides who came up from the Eerste Divisie and have both found the step up to Dutch football’s top tier an unforgiving one. Den Haag were champions of that division, Cambuur came up as runners up, and yet here they both are scrapping for survival before the autumn has properly set in.

Team News

Peter is without a couple of key names in the wide and attacking areas, which limits his options at a time when he needs creativity and forward threat more than ever. Cambuur are also missing a couple of bodies but have enough cover to largely replicate the side that beat NEC so convincingly.

  • Mylian Jimenez is out for ADO Den Haag, leaving the hosts short in midfield
  • Cameron Peupion is also unavailable, reducing Peter’s attacking options further
  • New signing Alex Pozo, a 27 year old winger who joins on a free transfer from Almeria, has been confirmed this week and could be involved once he finds his feet
  • Wout Asselman is absent for Cambuur
  • Daan Visser also misses out for the visitors

Predicted Lineups

Goalkeeper Kilian Nikiema did himself no harm at all with his performance against Twente, making double figures for saves in a 2-0 defeat that could easily have been worse. He keeps his place. Jonas Jensen Abbew, Matteo Waem, Pascal Mulder and Milan Hokke are expected to form the back four in front of him, with Eduardo carrying the main goal threat up top.

Plat should go with the spine that beat NEC. Thijs Jansen in goal, a back four of Morgan Costarelli, Billy van Duijl, Ismael Baouf and Devid Eugene Bouah, with Mathieu Maertens and Nicky Souren sitting as a double pivot to allow Rafik El Arguioui the freedom to link play between the lines. Fabian Kvam and Ilyes Hamache operate wide in support of striker Nicolas Binder.

Recent Form

The word that keeps coming back to you with ADO Den Haag is porous. Sixteen goals conceded in six Eredivisie matches is a horrifying total, and it is not as though the opposition have been exclusively the elite sides in the league. Defeats to Fortuna Sittard and Go Ahead Eagles are the results that will really sting, clubs who are not expected to be challenging for titles. Their one positive result, a 2-2 draw at Feyenoord, looks increasingly like an anomaly rather than evidence of genuine quality. The trip to Twente last weekend summed up their defensive fragility perfectly. Wout Weghorst converted from the spot and Robin Propper headed in from a corner. Set pieces and penalties. The sort of goals that come from a lack of defensive organisation and concentration.

Cambuur’s form graph is a strange shape. They shipped 18 goals in their opening five fixtures, including a 4-0 home loss to Excelsior on day one that set a dreadful tone. The 2-2 draw at Telstar was particularly damaging psychologically, leading 2-0 deep into stoppage time and ending up with nothing. But the NEC performance last weekend changed the mood entirely. Three goals, a clean sheet, and a performance with genuine energy and structure. Hamache scored twice, either side of half time, before substitute Iwan Henstra wrapped it up in stoppage time. One result does not fix everything, but it does change the atmosphere in the dressing room.

El Arguioui continues to be the player who makes Cambuur tick. Four goals already this season, operating as the creative hub between midfield and attack. He is the man Peter’s backline will be most concerned about on Saturday afternoon.

Head-to-Head Record

The recent head to head record here is firmly in Cambuur’s favour. They have gone unbeaten in the last five meetings between these two clubs, and crucially the most recent encounter at the Werktalent Stadion ended in a 2-1 win for the visitors. Home advantage has not been enough to swing things Den Haag’s way in this fixture, and given the current state of both sides, there is little reason to think that changes here.

Cambuur know they can win at this ground. That matters. When you arrive at an opposition stadium with that kind of recent record, it does something for your confidence before a ball has even been kicked.

Key Stats

  • ADO Den Haag have conceded 16 goals in six Eredivisie matches, the worst defensive record in the division
  • Cambuur are unbeaten in their last five meetings with Den Haag, winning the most recent fixture at the Werktalent Stadion 2-1
  • El Arguioui has four goals this season for Cambuur, while Hamache has three following his brace against NEC

ADO Den Haag vs Cambuur Betting Tips

There is a pretty clear picture forming here. Cambuur have the psychological edge, the better recent form and the more dangerous attacking weapons. Den Haag’s defence is leaking goals at an alarming rate and while they will carry hope in front of their own supporters, the visitors look equipped to exploit the space behind a back four that has been all over the place this season. The angle here is backing Cambuur to win, with goals expected at both ends given how open both defences have been.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Ilyes Hamache is the pick here. He scored twice against NEC last week and arrives absolutely full of confidence. He operates from wide areas and gets into dangerous positions regularly. Den Haag’s defence has struggled to deal with runners from deep and Hamache has the movement and the hunger to get in early.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Yes, both teams to score. ADO Den Haag have scored six goals in six games so they are not completely toothless, and Eduardo gives them a physical outlet up top. Cambuur have conceded in almost every game they have played this season. Two fragile defences, one of which is finally showing signs of improvement but has not yet proven that clean sheet against NEC is anything more than a one off. Back both teams to get on the scoresheet.

Corners Prediction

Over on corners. Both sides are going to have to come forward and press for the ball, Den Haag out of desperation and Cambuur because that is how they like to play with pace in wide areas. El Arguioui and Hamache operating from wide positions will force Den Haag back and generate corner situations. Expect a high volume from this one, over 9.5 corners is the call.

Cards Prediction

This has the feel of a feisty Eredivisie derby between two sides with a point to prove. ADO Den Haag are under pressure and home sides in that situation tend to get physical when things start going against them. Add in the fact that Cambuur players will be competing aggressively to protect a lead if they get one, and there should be enough friction for over 3.5 cards to land. Back over 3.5 total bookings.

Correct Score Prediction

A 1-2 Cambuur win is the call. Den Haag have enough about them to get something from Eduardo and the home crowd to nick a goal, but Cambuur’s forward line looks too sharp for a defence shipping nearly three goals a game. A narrow away win replicating the last meeting at this ground feels right.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Over 2.5 goals. These are two of the leakiest defences in the Eredivisie, and this fixture has the ingredients for a game with plenty of action at both ends. Five of Den Haag’s six matches this season have gone over 2.5 goals. Cambuur’s last three fixtures have all produced at least three goals. The pattern is clear.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Match Result Cambuur to Win
Both Teams To Score Yes
First Goalscorer Ilyes Hamache

Cambuur winning with goals at both ends fits the pattern of this season perfectly, and Hamache arriving in form after his brace against NEC makes him a strong shout to open the scoring.

Final Match Prediction

ADO Den Haag need something from this game desperately. One point from six matches is a trajectory that points only one way, and Peter will demand a reaction from his squad on home turf. The crowd will be behind them and there might be a spell early on where Den Haag cause Cambuur problems. Eduardo is a threat and home advantage should not be entirely dismissed.

But the weight of evidence points toward Cambuur. The head to head, the current momentum, the quality of El Arguioui and Hamache in the final third, and the historical inability of Den Haag to win at their own ground in this fixture recently. The visitors to take it 1-2, with Den Haag getting a consolation but ultimately coming up short once again.
