CompetitionPortuguese Primeira Liga
Who do you think will win?

Sporting Lisbon need a response and they need it quickly. Four points dropped from winning positions in their last two league outings has allowed Porto to open up a four point gap at the top of the Primeira Liga table, and with Benfica sitting two points clear of the Lions in second, the title race is already threatening to slip away from Rui Borges before autumn has barely started. Home comforts and a wounded Arouca side arriving at Estadio Jose Alvalade feels like exactly the kind of fixture Sporting need right now to get the wheels turning again.

Arouca have their own problems to sort out. Back to back wins to open the campaign gave the impression of a side with genuine momentum, but that early promise has dissolved somewhat over recent weeks, and a defeat to Santa Clara last time out where they were already two goals down before the break is the sort of result that raises questions about defensive organisation and concentration levels. The Wolves come to Lisbon needing something, but history and current form both suggest this is a seriously tough ask.

Sporting Lisbon vs Arouca Match Details

This Primeira Liga round seven fixture takes place at Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon, the iconic home of Sporting CP where the atmosphere on European nights is electric and even league evenings carry a serious weight of expectation. Arouca make the trip from the north of Portugal knowing that this ground has not been kind to them in recent memory, and with Sporting desperate to reclaim some ground on the teams above them, the pressure on the home side will be significant but also motivating.

Team News

Sporting are dealing with a few absentees but nothing that should derail their preparations significantly. The more encouraging news is that Rodrigo Zalazar is expected to return to the starting eleven after illness dropped him to the bench at Famalicao, which gives Borges a much needed creative option back in the mix.

  • Ibrahima Ba remains sidelined with a relapse of his right knee injury
  • Nuno Santos is unavailable
  • Moncef Zekri also misses out
  • Salvador Blopa has returned to full training after a muscular problem and could be in contention
  • Rodrigo Zalazar expected to start after shaking off illness
  • Goncalo Inacio keeps his place in the back line despite two recent own goals

Arouca are without a couple of notable names for the trip to the capital. Lee Hyun Ju is away with South Korea Under 23s at the Asian Games, while Miguel Puche remains a long term absentee following knee surgery earlier in the season. Ivan Barbero leads the line with four goals to his name already this campaign and is expected to keep his spot up front.

Predicted Lineups

Borges looks set to go with a familiar shape at Alvalade. With Ba still out, Inacio partners Debast in central defence despite those recent own goal concerns, and the gaffer appears to have decided that disrupting the back line further would do more harm than good. Zalazar coming back into midfield is the key change from last weekend, and with Luis Suarez having netted in each of his five starts this season, the Colombian leads the attack once more.

Sporting Lisbon: Silva; Fresneda, Debast, Inacio, Araujo; Altimira, Doumbia; Catamo, Zalazar, F Goncalves; Suarez

Seabra has limited options in terms of personnel and will need De Arruabarrena to be sharp between the sticks if Arouca are to keep this competitive. Barbero leads the line and will be looking to become more than a consolation merchant after his goal last weekend arrived only after the game was effectively done.

Arouca: De Arruabarrena; Esgaio, Sanchez, Fontan, Lebedenko; van Ee, Fukui; Trezza, Gozalbez, Djouahra; Barbero

Recent Form

Sporting’s form chart looks better than the mood around the club might suggest right now. Four straight Primeira Liga wins against Vitoria de Guimaraes, Alverca, Rio Ave and Nacional followed the opening weekend slip at Estrela, and a Champions League win over Galatasaray added real gloss to that run. The problem is the bookend results. Dropping points from a winning position at Estrela on the first day, and then doing something almost identical against ten man Famalicao last weekend, suggests a concentration issue that could prove costly over a long season.

What is also worth noting is that the Famalicao draw was the first time Sporting had scored fewer than two goals in a game this term. They have been sharp in front of goal and Luis Suarez has been a revelation, netting five times in six league appearances. The Lions sit third in the table on 14 points, which is actually a decent return, but with Porto and Benfica pulling away, maximum points at home are no longer optional.

Arouca opened with wins against Vitoria and Moreirense, which created genuine optimism in the camp. A 2-0 loss at Porto was understandable given the opposition, and a win over Maritimo kept the momentum going. But a goalless draw against winless Estoril Praia and then that insipid first half against Santa Clara have changed the tone. Vasco Seabra’s side are fifth in the table and their eight goals scored is a reasonable return, but conceding multiple goals in each of their last six meetings with Sporting is a statistic that jumps off the page when you are looking at this fixture.

Head-to-Head Record

This is not a happy hunting ground for Arouca. Sporting have won five of the last seven meetings between these clubs, with two draws and no wins for the Wolves during that stretch. More damaging for Arouca is the fact that they have conceded multiple goals in each of their last six encounters against Sporting. That includes an absolutely brutal 6-0 hammering in the corresponding fixture just over a year ago at this very venue, and the Lions have scored eight goals across the last two meetings alone.

There is one slightly curious wrinkle in the head to head picture. The only two occasions in those last seven meetings where Sporting have dropped points both came at Alvalade rather than on Arouca’s own patch. That said, given the current form and context, it would take a significant leap of faith to suggest Arouca can exploit that pattern here.

Key Stats

  • Sporting have scored at least twice in five of their six Primeira Liga games this season, with the Famalicao draw the only exception
  • Arouca have failed to score in their last two away league trips and have conceded multiple goals in each of their last six meetings with Sporting
  • Luis Suarez has scored in each of his five starts for Sporting this season, making him one of the most reliable attacking threats in the division right now

Sporting Lisbon vs Arouca Betting Tips

The narrative around this fixture is pretty clear. Sporting need a big home performance to reassert themselves in the title race, and Arouca arrive with defensive vulnerabilities that have been exposed repeatedly in recent weeks and historically whenever they face the Lions. The away side’s inability to score on their last two road trips adds another layer of concern for Seabra. This has the hallmarks of a comfortable Sporting win, with the home side finding the net multiple times and Arouca struggling to offer a meaningful attacking threat.

Corners Prediction

Sporting’s aggressive, possession heavy style at home generates corner volume, and Arouca will be doing a lot of defending here. Expect the Lions to work wide regularly and pin their opponents back for long spells. Over 9.5 corners looks a solid shout given how the game is likely to set up.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Sporting have been firing on all cylinders in front of goal for most of this season, and Arouca have been shipping goals at a rate in this fixture that makes a low scoring game hard to envisage. With Suarez in red hot form and the home side desperate to put a statement performance together, over 2.5 goals feels well within reach and is the call here.

Correct Score Prediction

A 3-1 scoreline feels right for this one. Sporting have the firepower to put three past an Arouca side who have been leaking goals in this fixture for years, and the Wolves do carry enough of an attacking threat through Barbero to nick one at the other end, even if the game is ultimately going against them.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Barbero has four goals this season and he is not the type to go quietly, even when his side are under the cosh. Sporting have also shown a willingness to let in the odd goal themselves, as the Famalicao draw demonstrated. BTTS yes is the pick, and the historical pattern of these meetings supports the idea that both sides will find the net.

Cards Prediction

Arouca are likely to get increasingly frustrated as the game goes on if Sporting take control early, and the combination of a chasing side making cynical fouls and the intensity of a home crowd pushing the Lions forward should generate a healthy card count. Over 3.5 cards feels like fair value for a fixture with this kind of competitive edge.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Luis Suarez is the obvious call and there is really no reason to overthink it. The Colombian has scored in every single start for Sporting this season, he leads the line with confidence, and he is going up against a defence that has been shipping goals regularly. Back him to open the scoring at what should be a reasonable price given his devastating consistency so far this term.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
First Goalscorer Luis Suarez
Both Teams To Score Yes
Total Goals Over 2.5

Suarez scoring, both sides finding the net, and the game going over 2.5 goals all point in the same direction and combine naturally into a coherent picture of how this fixture is likely to unfold.

Final Match Prediction

Sporting Lisbon have the quality, the motivation and the historical edge in this fixture, and Arouca arrive with enough defensive fragility to make a confident home win the most logical conclusion. Rui Borges will have his players fired up after a frustrating week, and the prospect of cutting the gap to Porto and Benfica should sharpen the focus considerably at Alvalade.

Arouca will not lie down and Barbero will cause the occasional problem, but the sheer weight of evidence from recent meetings and the current form of both sides points firmly in one direction. Sporting 3-1 Arouca.
