Day two at the WTA Singapore Open serves up some genuinely interesting first round action, with a mix of ranking battles, head to head grudge matches, and players desperate to build momentum heading into the final stretch of the season. Here is how I see the day’s matches playing out.
These two have already gone toe to toe twice and split the results right down the middle. Costoulas got the first win at a Dubai W100 in 2024, then Prozorova returned the favour at a Manila Challenger earlier this year. Neither match suggested one player has a clear edge over the other. They tend to trade momentum rather than one of them simply bullying the other off the court, which tells you a lot about how evenly matched they are.
Costoulas holds a ranking advantage of around 15 places, which in theory gives her the edge here, but that head to head record makes that gap look far less significant than it sounds on paper. There is genuinely very little to separate them when you weigh up form, surface preference, and big match experience at this level. That said, Prozorova has shown more comfort on hard courts earlier in 2026 and I think that nudges her over the line in what will likely be a long, grinding encounter.
Vekic comes into Singapore with a 2 to 1 lead in this head to head, but her two previous wins over Wang feel like a long time ago now. Back in Cincinnati in August, Wang ended Vekic’s perfect record against her by taking a three set victory, and that was no fluke. Vekic has had a frustrating 2026 overall, sliding to around 38th in the world despite her brilliant run to the Queen’s Club title earlier in the year, and her level has been maddeningly inconsistent ever since.
Wang has looked the more composed and reliable of the two lately. She is ranked around 40th in the world and has shown she is completely capable of dealing with Vekic’s power game, especially over three sets. The problem for Wang is that when Vekic is switched on and aggressive, she is genuinely difficult to stop on a fast hard court. That version of Vekic still shows up often enough to make backing her here reasonable. I think this goes long again but Vekic finds a way through.
Sakkari heads to Singapore with real purpose. The Greek is currently sitting outside the top 30 and knows that a deep run in east Asia could do serious things for her ranking and confidence as the season closes out. She already beat Fruhvirtova when they met in Beijing back in 2023, and while the Czech was considered a bigger prospect on tour at that point, she has since struggled to translate her talent into consistent main draw results.
Fruhvirtova is 21 now and there are still flashes of genuine quality in her game, but Sakkari has rediscovered real form in 2026. She has looked sharper, more clinical, and more confident through the back end of the season, and seeded seventh here she will be expected to progress. Based on current form and the head to head, I do not see this going the distance. Sakkari should be too good.
