CompetitionUEFA Nations League
Who do you think will win?

Armenia have not tasted victory in over a year, and Latvia arrive in Yerevan having shown some decent signs of life in recent months. So does home advantage give Melikyan’s side the edge, or can Nicolato’s men nick something on the road? That is the question hanging over this Nations League group opener, and it is a genuinely tricky one to call.

Both sides are hunting promotion from League C Group 2, alongside Montenegro and Cyprus. Win the group and you go straight up to League B. Finish second and you are into the playoffs. There is plenty riding on every point, which means neither team can afford to be cavalier here.

Armenia vs Latvia Match Details

This Nations League fixture takes place at a venue in Yerevan, with Armenia hosting in Group 2 of League C in the 2026/27 UEFA Nations League. It is a competitive group, with Montenegro and Cyprus also in the mix, making this one of those games where dropping points early could prove costly come the business end of the campaign.

Team News

Neither camp has a lengthy injury list to report, but there are a couple of selection talking points worth flagging up before we get into the main analysis.

  • Armenia will look to Eduard Spertsyan as their creative hub and main goal threat, with the 26 year old carrying 12 international goals to his name.
  • Artur Serobyan, Zhirayr Shaghoyan and Artur Miranyan are all expected to feature in the attacking third for the hosts.
  • Georgy Arutyunyan is set to earn a starting berth in the Armenia XI.
  • Latvia could hand a debut to QPR defender Dennis Cirkin, who has recently switched his international allegiance after representing England at youth level. One to watch in terms of how quickly he beds in.
  • Janis Ikaunieks and Vladislavs Gutkovskis are expected to lead the line for Latvia. Between them they have 26 international goals, so that front two carries a genuine punch.

Predicted Lineups

Armenia look set to line up in a shape that gives Spertsyan the freedom to operate and pick passes, with Serobyan, Shaghoyan and Miranyan providing width and movement ahead of him. Melikyan appears to have a settled core to work with, and Arutyunyan’s inclusion gives them some defensive solidity going forward.

Armenia: Cancarevic; Arutyunyan, Tiknizyan, Piloyan, Bueno; Spertsyan, Iwu, Sevikyan; Serobyan, Shaghoyan, Miranyan.

Latvia will be interesting to watch given the potential debut of Cirkin at left back. Nicolato tends to set his side up in a structured shape, with Ikaunieks and Gutkovskis asked to press and threaten in behind. If Cirkin settles quickly, Latvia have the defensive platform to make life difficult for the Armenia attack.

Latvia: Matrevics; Savalnieks, Balodis, Melniks, Cirkin; Saveljevs, Emsis, Vapne, Grabovskis; Ikaunieks, Gutkovskis.

Recent Form

Armenia’s form makes for uncomfortable reading if you are a home fan. Melikyan’s side have not won a match in over a year, going five defeats and two draws from their last seven outings. That run includes a 1-1 draw with Moldova in their most recent fixture back in June, which tells you a fair bit about where they are right now. A draw with Moldova is not exactly a statement of intent. There is talent in this squad, Spertsyan being the obvious example, but as a collective they have been fragile and inconsistent for too long now.

Latvia are not exactly setting the world alight either, but they do have more recent competitive momentum to draw from. Nicolato’s side picked up back to back 1-0 wins over Gibraltar in the Nations League relegation playoff in March, which kept them in League C. Yes, Gibraltar are Gibraltar, but winning both legs cleanly shows a defensive resilience that Armenia will need to test. They did lose to Lithuania on penalties in the Baltic Cup semi-finals and then fell 1-0 to Faroe Islands in the third place playoff, which tempers the optimism a little.

On balance, Latvia look the sharper side in terms of recent competitive results. Two wins from four is not vintage form, but it beats what Armenia have managed. The hosts carry a psychological weight from that long winless run, and that kind of thing can seep into the dressing room no matter how much a manager tries to suppress it.

Head-to-Head Record

Armenia actually have the better of this rivalry overall, winning three of the six meetings, drawing one and losing two. Crucially, they have won the last two encounters between the sides. Latvia’s most recent victory came in October 2023, a 2-0 win in a European Championship qualifier, but Armenia turned it around in November 2024, taking it 2-1.

So Armenia have that recent head to head edge, and they have home advantage on top of that. Latvia will know that winning here is far from straightforward historically, even if their form across the past twelve months looks more solid than the hosts.

Key Stats

  • Armenia have gone winless in seven consecutive matches, losing five and drawing two, which is a significant confidence issue heading into a home Nations League opener.
  • Latvia’s front two of Ikaunieks and Gutkovskis have combined for 26 international goals, giving Nicolato a genuine focal point in attack despite the team sitting 137th in the FIFA world rankings.
  • Armenia are ranked 107th in the world, thirty places above Latvia, but rankings and form do not always match up, and right now Latvia look the more dangerous unit in terms of momentum.

Armenia vs Latvia Betting Tips

This looks like a tight, cagey affair between two sides who are not exactly overflowing with attacking quality or confidence right now. Armenia have the home edge and the better head to head record, but their shocking run of form makes backing them outright a risky proposition. Latvia are well organised defensively and carry a threat up front through Ikaunieks and Gutkovskis. A draw feels like the most natural landing point for this one, and the markets around goals and cards offer some interesting angles.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Yes, leaning towards both teams to score here. Armenia have Spertsyan pulling the strings and Latvia’s front two are prolific enough at this level to cause problems. Neither backline has looked watertight in recent months, so a goal each feels more likely than a clean sheet for either side.

Corners Prediction

Over 8.5 corners looks the right play. Both sides are likely to probe wide and look to delivery from out wide given how compact these games in League C tend to be. Latvia in particular tend to use set pieces as a weapon, so expect a decent volume of dead ball situations throughout the ninety minutes.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Under 2.5 goals feels right for this one. Neither team is exactly free scoring, Armenia have struggled badly for goals during their winless run, and Latvia are a defensively minded outfit who grind out results rather than run riot. A low scoring game feels far more likely than a thriller.

Correct Score Prediction

A 1-1 draw looks the most probable scoreline. Armenia can nick a goal at home and Latvia have enough up front to respond. The recent head to head pattern of tight, competitive games supports this, and it fits with the under 2.5 goals angle neatly.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Eduard Spertsyan is the standout pick here. He is Armenia’s main creative force, has 12 international goals to his name, and will be the man the home side look to when they need something. In a tight game, set pieces and moments of individual quality tend to decide things, and Spertsyan is the player most likely to produce one of those moments.

Cards Prediction

Over 3.5 cards looks reasonable for a Nations League fixture with this kind of edge to it. Promotion is the prize across the group, so early tackles will go in and midfield battles will be physical. Latvia in particular tend to be combative in their defensive structure, and Armenia will need to mix it up to break them down.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Both Teams To Score Yes
Total Goals Under 2.5
First Goalscorer Eduard Spertsyan

A 1-1 scoreline ties all three of these picks together perfectly, with Spertsyan breaking the deadlock and Latvia finding a late equaliser in a tight, low scoring contest.

Final Match Prediction

Armenia have the home advantage and the better recent head to head record, but that winless run of seven games is too significant to ignore. A team that has not won in over a year carries a weight with them, and Latvia are organised and dangerous enough up front to make the most of any hesitancy from the hosts. Nicolato’s side will set up well, look to frustrate, and trust Ikaunieks and Gutkovskis to do their thing on the counter.

The likeliest outcome here is a 1-1 draw. Armenia nick an early goal, Latvia level through one of their experienced forwards, and both sides settle for a point that keeps them in touch with the promotion places. A frustrating night for the home fans, but a fair reflection of where both teams are right now.
