The Asian swing is underway and Hangzhou is the latest stop on the ATP calendar. Day one brings a couple of qualifying matches to keep an eye on before the main draw action gets going, and there is already plenty to chew over in terms of who looks sharp and who might struggle with the conditions out east.
These two have not crossed paths before so there is no head to head record to lean on, but the context tells you quite a lot about how this one is likely to unfold. Svrcina has been operating at main draw level on the ATP Tour for a while now and that experience in high pressure moments counts for a great deal in qualifying, where nerves can undo players quickly. The Czech looked genuinely impressive in the previous qualifying round, brushing aside Philip Sekulic of Australia while conceding just five games. That kind of clinical performance suggests he is in a good headspace heading into this one.
Noguchi handled himself decently enough in the first round too, beating fellow Japanese player Masamichi Imamura 6-1 6-4, but there is a clear gap in terms of what these two have experienced at this level. When the match gets tight and the pressure builds, Svrcina simply knows how to manage those moments better.
This is the first meeting between the pair and on paper it looks like a genuinely competitive first round tie. Walton has had the stronger 2026 overall and will be motivated to finish the year with a run in Asia. That said, Royer cannot be dismissed lightly. He picked up the Challenger title in Kingston in the buildup to the US Open and was clearly hitting form at the right time, even if converting that Challenger momentum into wins at tour level has proved tricky for him historically.
Both players are capable of holding serve consistently so this could easily go deep into a deciding set. The courts in Hangzhou tend to play on the quicker side and that should benefit Walton, whose serve is a genuine weapon at this level. If he can use it to control the rhythm of points from the off, Royer will have to do something special to take this.
Again, no previous meetings between these two to draw on. Vukic is the more seasoned player by some distance and has been a consistent presence at tour level, competing regularly in main draws on bigger stages than Jacquet has faced. The Australian plays an aggressive, serve and baseline game that can be very difficult to handle when he is dialled in, and the faster conditions in Hangzhou suit that style well.
Vukic has not been at his very best in recent weeks, which is worth noting, but even in slightly off form he carries enough firepower to trouble a player who has not yet established himself at this level. Jacquet will compete and could nick a set if Vukic is slow to warm up, but the Australian’s ability to dictate points with his serve and groundstrokes should eventually prove too much.
