Players Who Could Decide This

Cooper Connolly has really grown into the number three role for Australia and was the standout performer in the recent series against Zimbabwe, winning Player of the Series after scoring 150 runs across three innings including two half centuries. He will be looking to take that momentum into a sterner test and turn a start into something substantial at Kingsmead.

Nathan Ellis could be the key bowling figure on both sides. He led the Australian attack so effectively against Zimbabwe that he finished with nine wickets across three matches. Now that Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc are back in the XI he has more support around him, but Ellis has shown he is more than capable of leading from the front with the ball and will fancy his chances on a surface that should offer him something to work with.

South Africa are notably short of pace options going into this series, with Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Ottneil Baartmann and Kwena Maphaka all unavailable through injury. That is a significant blow to a side that usually relies on their seam attack to set the tone at home. It places greater pressure on Gerald Coetzee and the allrounders to step up with the ball.

Match Prediction

Australia come into this series with genuine momentum, a near full strength pace attack, and a batting order that has been firing. South Africa’s injury problems in the seam department are hard to ignore, and while Kingsmead will suit their conditions, the Proteas simply do not have the same bowling firepower they would normally bring to bear at home. Cummins and Starc returning to the side makes Australia a dangerous proposition, and Connolly and Head at the top of the order give them serious bite in the batting department.
