CompetitionUEFA Nations League
Who do you think will win?

Hungary come into this Nations League opener carrying the weight of a painful World Cup playoff exit but have done a decent job of shaking that off in the months since. Marco Rossi has quietly built a four match unbeaten run, picking up wins against Slovenia, Finland and Kazakhstan and earning a goalless draw with Greece. That kind of run does not happen by accident. There is something being built here, even if the squad is still finding its shape after some significant absentees. Ukraine, meanwhile, arrive under new management and with genuine ambition, but Andriy Yarmolenko watching from the bench and a goal drought stretching back seven matches are two things that deserve some serious attention.

Andrea Maldera is an interesting appointment, the first foreign coach Ukraine have ever had, and he got his reign off to a mixed start with a win in Poland followed by a defeat to Denmark. The positives are there, no question, but this is a side that has not managed more than two goals in a single game for quite some time. Against a Hungary back line that has been reasonably solid of late, that stat matters.

Hungary vs Ukraine Match Details

This opening Group B2 fixture takes place at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary’s national stadium and one of the finest grounds in European football. It marks the beginning of the 2026/27 UEFA Nations League campaign for both sides, with Georgia and Northern Ireland also in the group. Hungary, having been relegated from League A last time around, will see home advantage as a real asset as they look to push for an immediate return to the top tier. For Ukraine, a positive result on the road would set the tone nicely for what Maldera hopes will be a title winning group campaign.

Team News

Rossi is without two of his most important attacking players and will need others to step up. Ukraine are also missing a key creative voice in midfield, which could reshape how Maldera sets up going forward.

  • Ronald Sallai is absent from the Hungary squad
  • Barnabas Varga also misses out for the hosts
  • Damir Redzic is in line to fill in on the right flank
  • Daniel Lukacs could lead the line as centre forward
  • Dominik Szoboszlai may be pushed out to the left as a result of those absences
  • Alex Toth should start despite limited Bournemouth game time this season
  • Ruslan Malinovskyi is unavailable for Ukraine
  • Mykola Shaparenko is expected to come back into the midfield as a result
  • Illia Zabarnyi was deployed as a right back against Denmark and could continue there
  • Andriy Yarmolenko, with 126 caps to his name, is expected to start on the bench

Predicted Lineups

Rossi looks set to shuffle his attacking pieces to compensate for the losses of Sallai and Varga. Szoboszlai dropping wider left is the most logical move, freeing up room for Redzic on the right and giving Lukacs the central striker role. The spine of the team, with Orban at the back and Schafer in midfield, remains reliable enough.

Ukraine will likely set up in a structured shape under Maldera, with Zabarnyi continuing at right back and Shaparenko returning to give them some extra quality in the middle of the park. Yaremchuk leads the line, though without Yarmolenko starting behind him, the supply into the box could be limited. Sudakov is the man to watch for moments of quality in the number ten area.

Recent Form

Hungary’s recent run has been genuinely encouraging when you look at the context. Beating Slovenia, Finland and Kazakhstan while drawing with Greece and earning a 2-2 in Portugal tells you this is a team that competes. That draw in Lisbon is arguably the standout result. Portugal away is not a place you go and get anything without having real defensive organisation and some quality on the counter, and Hungary managed both. One defeat in eight is a run most managers in this division would be very happy with.

Ukraine’s recent form is harder to read. The win in Poland under Maldera was a decent debut statement, but the defeat to Denmark showed the limitations of this squad against higher quality opposition. What really stands out is the goal scoring record. Seven games without hitting more than two goals in a single match is a significant concern for a team that wants to top a group. Goals have not been flowing, and against a Hungary side that has kept things tight at the back, Maldera’s side may find the net difficult to break.

Hungary also carry the emotional edge here. Missing out on the World Cup playoffs at home to the Republic of Ireland was genuinely crushing for a nation that had made three consecutive European Championships. That kind of hurt can either derail a team or galvanise them, and the four match unbeaten run since suggests Rossi has managed to use it as motivation rather than letting it fester.

Head-to-Head Record

Hungary and Ukraine have met a handful of times over the years without a clear pattern emerging that heavily favours either side. These fixtures tend to be competitive and closely contested, which fits the profile of two Nations League rivals who know each other well enough to cancel out the obvious threats. Hungary’s home record is worth noting, though. The Puskas Arena generates a genuine atmosphere and the hosts have made it a difficult place to visit in recent campaigns.

Ukraine have not had an easy time of things in Hungary historically, and arriving with a new manager still embedding his ideas, plus key absences, makes it even tougher. Neither side has consistently dominated these meetings, but the home advantage narrative feels significant when the overall quality gap between the squads is as thin as it is here.

Key Stats

  • Hungary are unbeaten in their last four matches, winning three of them
  • Ukraine have not scored more than twice in any of their last seven fixtures
  • Hungary have lost just once in their last eight games across all competitions

Hungary vs Ukraine Betting Tips

This is a game where the shape of the bets matters as much as the outright result call. Hungary at home, in decent form, against a Ukraine side struggling to score freely is a setup that points in one clear direction. The hosts should have enough to edge it, but clean sheets and big margins feel unlikely given Ukraine’s defensive structure under Maldera.

Cards Prediction

Nations League group openers often carry a competitive edge as teams set out their stall for the campaign ahead. Hungary will be physical in midfield and Ukraine will need to be aggressive to stay in the game. A moderate card count feels right here, somewhere around three to four bookings across the ninety minutes, with midfield battles the likely source of most of the referee’s notebook activity.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Ukraine’s goal drought is the key factor pushing this towards No for BTTS. Seven matches without scoring more than twice, a new system still being embedded, and key creative players missing all point to a difficult night in front of goal. Hungary are not the kind of side that leaks cheaply either. We are leaning towards BTTS No here.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Under 2.5 goals feels like the natural call for this one. Hungary will be organised and difficult to break down, Ukraine are not scoring for fun right now, and group openers between evenly matched sides rarely turn into goal fests. A tight one to two goal game is the most likely outcome and Under 2.5 looks well priced as a result.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Dominik Szoboszlai is the obvious name. Even in a slightly wider role to accommodate the absences around him, the Liverpool midfielder has the quality and the licence to drive forward and finish. He carries a genuine goal threat and is Hungary’s most dangerous player by some distance. If the hosts break the deadlock, he is involved more often than not.

Correct Score Prediction

A 1-0 home win feels the most likely outcome. Hungary have the structure and the home advantage, Ukraine do not look like a side that will find the net easily against a well organised back line, and one goal could well be enough to settle this. The closing stages of the game may be when the decisive moment arrives, as Rossi’s fitness work and squad depth could tell in the final quarter.

Corners Prediction

Neither side is the type to flood the opposition with crosses from wide areas at a relentless rate. Hungary will look to build through midfield and Ukraine will attempt to stay compact. Somewhere in the region of eight to ten corners total feels about right, with Over 8.5 corners a marginal call but one that depends on how open the game becomes if either side chases the game late on.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Match Result Hungary to Win
Both Teams To Score No
Total Goals Under 2.5

A Hungary win to nil with goals at a premium fits the form picture perfectly and gives this bet builder a coherent logic that the underlying stats fully support.

Final Match Prediction

Hungary to win 1-0. Rossi’s side have the home advantage, the recent momentum, and the motivation of a nation still stinging from a World Cup playoff exit that felt deeply unfair on a squad that had worked so hard to get there. This feels like the kind of game where they use all of that to grind out the three points without necessarily playing their best football.

Ukraine will make it difficult. Maldera has clearly set up his side to be hard to beat and the defensive structure looks solid enough. But without the goals to go with it, and without their creative players firing on all cylinders, a narrow defeat on the road in their group opener is a very plausible outcome. Hungary 1-0 Ukraine is the call.
