CompetitionUEFA Nations League
Who do you think will win?

Zinedine Zidane. Back in French football. Just not in the way anyone quite imagined. The greatest midfielder his country ever produced is now the gaffer of Les Bleus, stepping into a dugout that Didier Deschamps occupied for over a decade, and his first competitive test could not be more fitting. A Nations League opener against Turkey, on the road, in what promises to be a genuinely spicy atmosphere. The question for anyone looking at this fixture from a betting angle is simple enough. Can France get their new era off to a winning start, or will Turkey make Zidane’s bow an uncomfortable one?

There is plenty to unpack here. Both sides arrive carrying the weight of a World Cup that did not go to plan, both have selection issues to manage, and the head to head record between these two is tighter than you might expect. Let’s get into it.

Turkey vs France Match Details

This Nations League Group 1 clash in League A takes place in Turkey, where Vincenzo Montella’s side host France in what is the first of back to back home fixtures for the Crescent Stars before the month is out. Group 1 also features Italy and Belgium, so there is real quality throughout, and every point is going to matter. Turkey will also host Italy shortly after this one, before facing road trips to Belgium and Italy in October. For France, this is game one under Zidane, with a trip to Belgium to follow.

Team News

Neither side is at full strength, which adds a layer of intrigue to the selection puzzle both managers face.

  • Hakan Calhanoglu is out injured for Turkey, a significant blow given his influence in central midfield
  • Kenan Yildiz is also unavailable through injury, removing another creative option from Montella’s squad
  • Arda Guler is fit and expected to start, which will ease some of the pain for the hosts
  • William Saliba misses out for France with an injury, leaving Zidane short at the back
  • Aurelien Tchouameni has been left out due to fitness concerns, another midfield absence for Les Bleus

Predicted Lineups

Montella looks set to line Turkey up with Cakir in goal behind a back four of Celik, Demiral, Bardakci and Elmali. Salih Ozcan steps into the midfield void left by Calhanoglu, partnering Kokcu and Yuksek in the middle of the park. Guler gets the nod in the final third alongside Baris Yilmaz through the middle and Kerem Akturkoglu wide.

France’s expected eleven sees Maignan between the sticks, with Kounde, Upamecano and Konate covering for the absent Saliba. Adrien Truffert of Bournemouth could earn only his second cap at left back, a notable moment for the young defender. Camavinga and Rabiot anchor the midfield, with Dembele, Olise and Doue supporting Kylian Mbappe up top. That is a frightening front line by any measure.

Recent Form

France arrive here on the back of two consecutive defeats, which is not how anyone envisioned the build up to Zidane’s first game in charge. Les Bleus were knocked out of the 2026 World Cup at the semi final stage by Spain, who went on to lift the trophy, and then suffered a heavy 6 4 defeat to England in the third place playoff. That scoreline in particular will have stung. France were supposed to be favourites for the tournament, and they ended up on the wrong end of a chaotic shootout for bronze. There will be wounded pride to channel here.

Turkey also left the World Cup early, eliminated at the group stage after losing to Austria and Paraguay, though they did sign off with a win over the USA. It was a bittersweet return to the World Cup stage for a nation that had not been there since 2002. Montella’s squad know they underperformed when it mattered most, and a strong Nations League campaign is their chance to rebuild some credibility.

In terms of the Nations League specifically, Turkey have a solid overall record in the competition across its various editions, with 11 wins, 6 draws and 7 defeats in total. They have worked their way up from League C and are now competing at the top table in League A. France, meanwhile, are former winners of the competition having beaten Spain in the 2020 to 21 final, and finished third in the most recent edition. The pedigree is there for Les Bleus, but they need to rediscover their best form quickly.

Head-to-Head Record

These two sides have met six times, and Turkey have only managed one victory in that time. That win came in June 2019, a 2 0 result in a European Championship qualifier that remains the highlight of their record against France. The last meeting between the sides ended 1 1, also in a Euro qualifier in October 2019. Interestingly, France’s last win in this fixture came back in June 2009, which tells you this is not the sort of walkover the rankings might suggest.

Turkey at home, without Calhanoglu and Yildiz but with Guler pulling strings, are capable of making this extremely uncomfortable. The head to head has a pattern of close games, and there is no reason to think this one will be any different.

Key Stats

  • Mbappe has scored 66 goals for France at international level, and he arrives in form as one of the most dangerous forwards on the planet
  • Turkey have won just one of their six meetings with France, and that was over seven years ago
  • France have suffered back to back defeats heading into this, a run that will sharpen focus under a new manager
  • Turkey host both France and Italy within days of each other, meaning squad freshness and fitness management will be tested

Turkey vs France Betting Tips

Zidane needs a result here. France have real firepower even with their absentees, and the quality gap between these sides in the final third is significant. Turkey will make it competitive and the atmosphere will be loud, but I expect France to edge this one without it being comfortable. Here is how I see the key markets shaping up.

Correct Score Prediction

Turkey will give a good account of themselves and with Guler in the side they are capable of hurting France, but Les Bleus have too much in the attacking third. I am going with a 2 1 France win, a scoreline that reflects the competitive nature of this fixture while acknowledging the quality gap up front.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Given the attacking talent on both sides and the fact that France’s defensive cover is slightly stretched with Saliba out, I would lean toward over 2.5 goals. France have the firepower to push the total up, and Turkey at home will not sit deep and accept a shutout.

Corners Prediction

France tend to dominate possession and territory against most opponents, and they will be pushing bodies forward through wide areas with Dembele, Olise and the full backs. Turkey will look to hit on the break and win their own set pieces. Over 9.5 corners looks a reasonable line to be on the right side of here.

Cards Prediction

Nations League football at this level with a partisan home crowd and two sides carrying a bit of frustration from the World Cup is a decent recipe for cards being shown. Turkey tend to be competitive in the tackle and France have players who invite fouls. Over 3.5 cards feels fair and worth considering.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Yes. Turkey at home with Guler and Akturkoglu available are not going to get shut out without a fight, and France without Saliba are slightly more exposed than usual at the back. Both teams to score looks the right call here given the head to head trends and the attacking quality on both sides of the pitch.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Match Result France to Win
Both Teams To Score Yes
Over Goals Over 2.5 Goals

France’s attacking quality should get them the win, but Turkey’s threat through Guler means a clean sheet is far from guaranteed, making the BTTS and over 2.5 goals selections natural partners alongside the French victory.

Final Match Prediction

Zidane gets off to a winning start, but it will not be easy. Turkey are a genuine Nations League A level side, they have quality players in the right areas, and their home support will push them. Without Calhanoglu and Yildiz though, there are gaps in their squad that France’s front line will exploit.

Mbappe, Dembele, Olise and Doue is not a combination most back fours in the world want to deal with. France win this 2 1, with Turkey earning their goal and making Les Bleus work hard for every moment of quality. New chapter, same outcome.
