CompetitionUEFA Nations League
Who do you think will win?

Albania come into this Nations League opener off the back of a difficult stretch, five straight defeats that has left new boss Rolando Maran still searching for his first win since taking over from Sylvinho in May. The Red and Blacks narrowly missed out on World Cup qualification this summer, losing a playoff final to Poland after throwing away a lead, and that heartbreak has been followed by a June international break to forget, with 1-0 friendly losses to both Israel and Luxembourg doing little to lift the mood. Belarus, by contrast, arrive in Tirana having not lost in six consecutive matches under Viktor Goncharenko, a run that includes three friendly wins and a draw with Burkina Faso. They look more settled, more organised, and considerably harder to beat than they have been in previous campaigns.

The gap between where these two sides are right now is genuinely interesting. Albania are still a decent outfit on paper, with real quality in their squad, but the confidence clearly took a knock with that World Cup exit and the losing run that followed. Belarus are not a glamorous side by any stretch, but under Goncharenko they have found some steel. Whether that translates to Tirana on a big occasion is the real question.

Albania vs Belarus Match Details

The fixture takes place at the Arena Kombetare in Tirana, Albania’s home ground, and sits within UEFA Nations League C Group 3 alongside Finland and San Marino. Both sides will be eyeing automatic promotion as the primary aim, though a second place finish would still offer a route through the playoffs. This is a significant opening fixture for both sets of players and staff given how much the group dynamic could be shaped early on.

Team News

Albania have a few problems to navigate, with Maran already without several key names heading into his first competitive game in charge.

  • Midfielders Qazim Laci and Adrion Pajaziti are both out injured and have withdrawn from the squad
  • Feta Fetai has been called in as cover and is among four uncapped players who could make their senior debut
  • Goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha is sidelined, meaning 37-year-old Etrit Berisha returns after a two-year absence and is set for what could be his 82nd cap
  • Burnley striker Armando Broja is a notable absentee, leaving Rey Manaj, Mirlind Daku and Cristian Shpendi competing for the forward positions
  • Shpendi in particular is in electric club form with six Serie B goals in five games for Cesena this season

Belarus are also without a couple of familiar faces, with midfielder Yury Kavalyow and forward Vladislav Morozov both left out of Goncharenko’s squad following their June involvement. Key creative midfielder Max Ebong from CSKA Sofia is expected to play in an advanced central role, while 20-year-old Porto B starlet Trofim Melnichenko is pushing for a start in attack.

Predicted Lineups

Maran looks set to go with Berisha between the sticks by necessity, with the experienced back line of Hysaj, Djimsiti, Kumbulla and Mitaj likely to form a solid defensive foundation. In midfield, Mehmeti, Ramadani, Asllani and Hoxha should provide the engine room, with Manaj and Shpendi leading the line. Shpendi’s form makes him almost impossible to leave out.

Goncharenko is expected to line up with Pavlyuchenko in goal, a back four of Shevchenko, Volkov, Begunov and Malkevich, with Yablonsky and Bocherov in a double pivot. Shumansky, Ebong and Kontsevoy will provide the creativity behind Melnichenko, who looks the most likely to lead the line ahead of Lisakovich and Barkovskiy.

Recent Form

Albania’s form is a genuine concern. Five successive defeats is a rough run for any side, and the manner of some of those results, particularly the World Cup playoff collapse against Poland, will have stung. Those June friendlies against Israel and Luxembourg should have been comfortable enough affairs to get some momentum back, but instead both ended in 1-0 losses. Before that bad run took hold they had gone five games unbeaten between September and November 2025, so this is a team capable of better, but right now they are lacking that winning feeling.

Belarus tell a very different story lately. Six games without defeat under Goncharenko, who came in to replace Carlos Alos in January, has given the squad belief. Wins over Cyprus, Armenia and Syria in friendlies, plus a 2-2 draw with Burkina Faso, show a side that is functioning well enough. However, one number that stands out is their defensive record. They have conceded in 10 of their last 12 games, which tells you the shutouts are hard to come by even when the results have been positive.

So you have a home side low on confidence but with genuine quality, facing a travelling side high on momentum but with a leaky defence. Albania will fancy their chances of getting at Belarus if they can get their noses in front early, and the pressure of a home crowd at the Arena Kombetare could be just the kind of lift Maran’s men need to break their losing run.

Head-to-Head Record

The historical record between these two leans clearly in Albania’s favour when you look at recent encounters. The Red and Blacks are unbeaten in their last four meetings with Belarus, winning three and drawing one. That run includes both home and away victories during the 2020-21 Nations League campaign, so Albania know how to handle this opponent in this exact competition format.

Belarus have not won away to Albania since November 2007, when they beat them 4-2 in a European qualifier. That is nearly two decades without a road win in this fixture, and while Goncharenko’s side are a different proposition to recent Belarusian teams, breaking that sequence at a charged Arena Kombetare will be a significant ask.

Key Stats

  • Albania have lost five consecutive games, their worst run since 1997 when they suffered six straight defeats
  • Belarus have conceded in 10 of their last 12 matches despite their unbeaten run of six games
  • Belarus have not won away to Albania since a 4-2 win in November 2007, now nearly 19 years ago

Albania vs Belarus Betting Tips

Albania’s poor recent form makes this a trickier call than the head-to-head record might suggest on the surface, but the combination of home advantage, a genuinely motivated crowd, and Belarus’s persistent defensive frailty gives the Red and Blacks enough of an edge to back here. Maran will be desperate for his first win, and a Nations League opener at home is exactly the kind of fixture you want to get off the mark in.

Corners Prediction

Albania will likely dominate possession and territory as the home side, while Belarus will look to sit compact and hit on the break. That kind of setup typically generates a decent number of corners, with Albania forcing set piece opportunities and Belarus occasionally breaking and winning their own. Over 9.5 corners looks a reasonable call in this one.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

With Belarus conceding in 10 of their last 12 games, it feels fairly likely they let one in here, and equally Albania’s recent struggles in front of goal give Belarus a sniff. Both teams have the tools to score and neither defence is completely watertight right now. BTTS yes is the lean here.

Correct Score Prediction

Given Albania’s home record against Belarus and Maran’s desperation for that first win, a narrow home victory feels the most likely outcome. A 2-1 scoreline captures the likely pattern of this game: Albania shade it but Belarus find the net at some point given their recent attacking output.

Cards Prediction

Nations League matches with something riding on them tend to bring a physical edge, and Belarus will need to be disciplined when they defend deep. Albania may grow frustrated if chances dry up. Over 3.5 cards is a reasonable market to consider here, with bookings likely in midfield where both sides will be competing hard for control.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Cristian Shpendi is the pick here. Six goals in five Serie B appearances for Cesena shows he is absolutely flying at club level right now, and with Broja absent Maran will be leaning on him heavily. He is young, sharp, and full of confidence. If Albania get on top early, Shpendi looks the most likely to capitalise.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Match Result Albania to Win
Both Teams To Score Yes
First Goalscorer Cristian Shpendi

Albania winning in a game where both sides score points directly to a 2-1 home victory, and Shpendi’s blistering club form makes him the standout candidate to open the scoring in that scenario.

Final Match Prediction

Everything about this fixture sets up as a narrow Albanian win. They have the home advantage, a crowd that will be fired up after the heartbreak of missing out on a World Cup, and a head-to-head record that firmly favours them against this opposition. Belarus will not make it easy and their recent solidity means this should not be taken for granted, but the Red and Blacks have the quality to get the job done when it matters most at home.

Prediction: Albania 2-1 Belarus. Maran gets off the mark in his first competitive game, Shpendi makes his mark on the scoresheet, and the Arena Kombetare finally has something to celebrate after a rough few months for Albanian football.
