CompetitionUEFA Nations League
Who do you think will win?

Iceland have not won a football match since November last year. That is not a slump, that is a full blown identity crisis. A winless run stretching across friendlies against Mexico, Japan and Argentina, plus draws with Canada and Haiti, tells you everything about where this squad currently sits. And yet here they are, back in competitive action, hosting Estonia in a League C Nations League opener that they simply have to win if this new campaign is going to feel like a fresh start rather than more of the same.

Estonia are hardly the stiffest test available. Ranked 127th in the world, Jurgen Henn’s side managed just one win in six during the previous Nations League cycle, and that solitary victory came against a ten man Moldova side. They arrive in Reykjavik as Baltic Cup holders, which sounds impressive until you dig into the detail and realise the competition involved the Faroe Islands and Lithuania. Iceland will not be losing sleep over that trophy cabinet addition.

Iceland vs Estonia Match Details

The match takes place at Laugardalsvollur in Reykjavik, with Iceland kicking off their 2026 to 2027 UEFA Nations League campaign in League C Group 4. The group also includes Luxembourg and Bulgaria, meaning every point in this opening fixture matters if Iceland want to establish themselves at the top early. After the humiliation of relegation from League B and a failed World Cup qualifying campaign, Arnar Gunnlaugsson needs a result here to settle nerves both in the camp and in the stands.

Team News

Neither side goes into this completely clean on the injury front, with a few notable absentees on both sides of the ball.

  • Iceland first choice goalkeeper Elias Rafn Olafsson is out after undergoing kidney surgery, ruling him out of this entire set of Nations League fixtures
  • Brentford stopper Hakon Valdimarsson has only just returned from a back injury but looks set to get the gloves ahead of Runar Alex Runarsson
  • Anton Ara Einarsson of Breidablik was called up as emergency cover for Olafsson
  • Veteran captain Aron Gunnarsson has retired from international football but remains technically available until he formally signs off next month
  • Estonia striker Rauno Sappinen is injured and will miss out, leaving the attacking burden on Alex Tamm
  • Regular Estonia left back Vlasiy Sinyavskiy is also unavailable, with Michael Schjonning-Larsen expected to deputise

Predicted Lineups

Gunnlaugsson is likely to go with Valdimarsson between the sticks given his Premier League pedigree, even accounting for the recent injury layoff. The back four picks itself for the most part, with the attacking interest coming from the partnership of Albert Gudmundsson and Orri Oskarsson. Gudmundsson, now at Lazio, is the creative heartbeat of this Iceland side and the player Estonia will most need to contain.

Iceland probable XI: Valdimarsson; Palsson, Gretarsson, Magnusson, Tomasson; Ellertsson, Johannesson, Baldursson, Haraldsson; Gudmundsson, Oskarsson

For Estonia, Karol Mets captains the defence as ever, with Werder Bremen goalkeeper Karl Hein behind him. The attack looks thin without Sappinen, and Henn will be hoping Tamm and the supporting cast can find some cutting edge. Estonia probable XI: Hein; Saliste, Mets, Paskotsi, Schjonning-Larsen; Soomets, Kait, Kristal; Mustmaa, Tamm, Saarma

Recent Form

Iceland’s form makes grim reading. After finishing third in their League B group behind Wales and Turkey, they were then dumped out of the relegation playoffs in both legs against Kosovo. The World Cup qualifying campaign that followed was similarly disappointing, with a third place finish in a group topped by France and Ukraine. Then came five straight friendlies without a win, losing to Mexico, Japan and Argentina while drawing with Canada and Haiti. The last time Iceland tasted victory was a 2-0 win over Azerbaijan back in November. That is a long time without a win, and it will weigh on the players whether they admit it or not.

Estonia’s form is marginally less catastrophic only because expectations are so much lower. One win from six in the previous Nations League, and a World Cup qualifying campaign where they were left trailing by the group’s serious nations. The Baltic Cup triumph gave them something to celebrate, but the level of competition in that tournament means it tells us very little about how they will cope against a side like Iceland, even one currently lacking confidence.

What this form picture ultimately says is that both sides are in need of a positive result. The difference is that Iceland have the quality to deliver one at home, particularly against opponents who have shown very little firepower in recent campaigns.

Head-to-Head Record

Iceland and Estonia do not meet frequently, but the historical pattern strongly favours the hosts. Iceland have generally had the upper hand in their encounters, and playing on home soil at Laugardalsvollur gives them an added advantage. Estonia have rarely threatened when facing sides ranked significantly above them, and the FIFA ranking gap of over fifty places between these two sides reflects a genuine difference in quality rather than just administrative number shuffling.

There is nothing in the recent head to head history to suggest Estonia are capable of pulling off a shock here. Home advantage, quality in the final third, and a squad that despite poor form still contains genuine top level talent in Gudmundsson all point in one direction.

Key Stats

  • Iceland have not won a competitive or friendly fixture since November, a run of at least five games without victory
  • Estonia won just one of six Nations League games in the previous edition, with that win coming against ten man Moldova
  • Iceland are ranked 74th by FIFA, Estonia 127th, a gap of 53 places that reflects a meaningful difference in squad depth and quality

Iceland vs Estonia Betting Tips

Iceland start as clear favourites and rightly so. The long winless run clouds the picture slightly, but the quality gap between these squads is real, and the hosts have the home crowd behind them for a competitive opener they desperately need to win. Estonia’s attack looks toothless without Sappinen, and even a misfiring Iceland side should have enough to get the job done here.

Corners Prediction

Iceland will be pushing forward for large stretches of this game, particularly if they go in front early, and Estonia are likely to sit deep and defend in numbers. That setup tends to generate corner volume for the dominant side, so backing over eight or nine corners in this one looks like solid value.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Estonia’s lack of cutting edge in attack makes a high scoring game unlikely. Iceland should win this, but their own confidence issues and a suspect recent record suggest they may not run riot. Under 2.5 goals feels like the sensible call, with a tight one or two goal home win the most probable outcome.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Given Estonia’s struggles in front of goal and the absence of Sappinen, their main striker, it is hard to make a case for them finding the net here. Iceland’s defence has not been impenetrable lately, but facing an Estonia attack missing its key forward, a clean sheet is genuinely on the cards. BTTS No looks the right side of this market.

Correct Score Prediction

A 2-0 home win feels right. Iceland have enough quality through Gudmundsson and Oskarsson to find the net twice, and Estonia are unlikely to trouble the scoreboard without Sappinen. A professional, controlled home victory without too many alarms.

Cards Prediction

Nations League football at this level, particularly opening group games, can carry a bit of needle as both sides look to set their stall out early. Estonia will need to foul Iceland to disrupt their rhythm, and a total of three or more cards across the match is a reasonable expectation. Over 2.5 cards is worth a look.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Albert Gudmundsson is the standout pick here. The Lazio forward is Iceland’s most dangerous attacking threat by some distance, and with Estonia likely to sit in and invite pressure, he will have space to operate in the pockets between the lines. He has the quality to unlock a defensive Estonia shape, and first goalscorer at a decent price makes sense.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Match Result Iceland to Win
Both Teams To Score No
First Goalscorer Albert Gudmundsson

A home win, a clean sheet and Gudmundsson on the scoresheet is a combination that fits neatly with everything the form and team news is pointing towards.

Final Match Prediction

Iceland need this. After months of poor results and the embarrassment of Nations League relegation, facing a limited Estonia side at home in front of their own supporters is exactly the kind of fixture Gunnlaugsson needs to draw a line under the recent negativity. The hosts have the quality, the motivation and the home advantage.

Estonia will make themselves difficult to break down, but without Sappinen and with a thin squad overall, they simply do not carry enough threat to punish Iceland on the counter. Expect a measured home victory. Iceland 2-0 Estonia.
