CompetitionAfrican Cup of Nations Qualifying
Who do you think will win?

Ethiopia head into this 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in desperate need of a response after falling to a gut-punch 1-0 defeat against Sudan on their opening day, conceding in the 86th minute when it looked like they might sneak a point. A late winner from Mohamed Eisa was the difference at the Juba National Stadium, and Yohannes Sahle will know his side cannot afford another slip-up if they want to keep alive any real hopes of reaching the tournament. The Walia Ibex have not appeared at the AFCON since 2021, where they finished bottom of their group with a single point, and the hunger to return to African football’s biggest stage is obvious. The problem is who is standing in their way this week.

Senegal are not in particularly brilliant form themselves right now. Patrick Vieira’s first game in charge ended in a 1-1 draw against Mozambique, Nicolas Jackson put them ahead before the half time whistle, and they then completely lost their way in the second half. That result follows a World Cup campaign where the Lions of Teranga were knocked out at the round of 32 stage after throwing away a two-goal lead to Belgium in extra time. There is clearly a squad capable of better, but Vieira is still finding his feet. Even so, the difference in class between these two nations is stark, and the head-to-head record paints a telling picture.

Ethiopia vs Senegal Match Details

This Group J 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier takes place at the Bahir Dar International Stadium in Ethiopia. Both sides are sitting on zero points after their respective opening-day stumbles, which gives this game an urgency that a second-round qualifier would not usually carry. Three points here would be enormous for whichever side takes them.

Team News

Neither camp has significant injury or suspension concerns flagged ahead of this one, which means both managers should be working from a full deck heading into a game this important.

  • Abel Yalew scored twice in the preliminary round against Sao Tome and Principe and is expected to lead the line for Ethiopia once again
  • Bereket Samuel, Yared Baye, Samuel Yohannes and Bekele Berhane are likely to form the Ethiopian back four
  • Gatoch Panom, a long-serving figure in midfield who made his debut back in November 2012, is expected to partner Habtamu Tekeste in the engine room
  • Vieira is expected to name a largely unchanged Senegal starting eleven despite the Mozambique result
  • Ibrahim Mbaye came off the bench in the opener and could push for a starting role here
  • Iliman Ndiaye is also in contention to start alongside Jackson up front

Predicted Lineups

Ethiopia are expected to line up with Abubeker Nura in goal behind a back four of Samuel, Baye, Yohannes and Berhane. Panom and Tekeste should anchor the midfield, with Gugsa and Tafesse providing width, leaving Markneh and Yalew to operate as the forward pair.

Senegal are likely to set up with El Hadji Malick Diouf at right back alongside Moussa Niakate, Sadibou Sane and Lamine Sy across the defence. Lamine Camara, Pape Gueye and Pape Matar Sarr should provide the midfield foundation, with Ndiaye, Mbaye and Jackson tasked with unlocking the Ethiopian rearguard.

Recent Form

Ethiopia actually showed real promise in the preliminary round, which is worth remembering before anyone writes them off entirely. A 4-0 aggregate victory over Sao Tome and Principe, including a convincing 3-0 win in the first leg and a composed 1-0 result in the return, showed a side that is organised and can be clinical in front of goal. The defeat to Sudan was cruel in its timing, a single goal four minutes from the final whistle against a side who defended deep and caught Ethiopia on the break. Sahle’s men will have been bitterly disappointed.

Senegal’s form coming into this one is a strange mix of quality and frustration. The World Cup summed it up perfectly: three points from three group games, finishing third in Group I, and then a remarkable bottle job against Belgium in the round of 32, surrendering a two-goal advantage in the final three minutes to go out in extra time. The draw against Mozambique on Thursday felt like more of the same. Jackson’s goal was well-worked and full of the technical quality you would expect, but Senegal simply could not impose themselves in the second period.

What does all this mean for Tuesday? Senegal have the individual quality to win this comfortably, but there are clear signs that Vieira has not yet figured out how to get the best from this group. Ethiopia will defend deep, stay compact and look to hit on the break. If Senegal cannot break them down early, this could be more of a battle than the odds suggest.

Head-to-Head Record

This fixture has an almost nonexistent recent history. The last time these two sides met was in June 1997, nearly three decades ago, in an AFCON qualifying clash that Senegal won 3-0. Souleymane Sane netted twice and Omar Traore added a third in the 68th minute. Going back even further, since a 2-1 friendly win for Ethiopia in November 1963, Senegal have won each of their three subsequent encounters, scoring 10 goals and conceding just twice across those games.

The overall record strongly favours Senegal, but 29 years is a long time in football, and these are very different squads and very different contexts. The venue this time favours Ethiopia, and home advantage in international football at this level is not something to dismiss lightly.

Key Stats

  • Senegal have scored 10 goals and conceded just two in their last three meetings against Ethiopia, winning all three
  • Ethiopia have not appeared at the AFCON since 2021, where they collected just one point in three group-stage games
  • Senegal are targeting a seventh consecutive AFCON appearance after missing out entirely in 2013

Ethiopia vs Senegal Betting Tips

Senegal should have the quality to get the job done here, but the circumstances make this slightly trickier than a straightforward pick. Vieira is still working out his best setup, Ethiopia are at home and desperate for points, and the Lions of Teranga have shown a tendency to struggle when games become tight and tense. That said, the gulf in squad depth is real, and backing Senegal to win while keeping an eye on a tight scoreline feels like the right approach.

Corners Prediction

Senegal will dominate possession and territory for long spells, pushing Ethiopia back and forcing them to defend in their own half. Expect a steady supply of corners as Vieira’s side work the ball wide and look to whip deliveries into the box. Over 9.5 corners looks well within range.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Ethiopia showed they can find the net at international level during the preliminary round, and Senegal’s defensive fragility has been evident recently, conceding to Mozambique and shipping goals at the World Cup. However, Ethiopia’s attacking threat against better opposition is still unproven at this level, and Senegal’s individual quality should be enough to keep the Walia Ibex quiet. No on BTTS.

Correct Score Prediction

Senegal have the firepower to score two or three, and with Ethiopia likely to set up cautiously and look to frustrate, a 2-0 away win feels like a fair reflection of the balance of play. Jackson, Ndiaye and Mbaye are more than capable of finding gaps, but Ethiopia’s defensive organisation could keep it from turning into a rout.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Both sides come in off results where goals were at a premium, and with Ethiopia prioritising defensive solidity at home, this could easily stay under the 2.5 line. Senegal have enough to win without necessarily putting three or four past a well-organised back four. Under 2.5 goals gets the nod.

Cards Prediction

Ethiopia are fighting for their qualification hopes on home soil and will be aggressive in the challenge, particularly in the first half as they try to disrupt Senegal’s rhythm. Senegal have the technical ability to draw fouls and frustrate opponents. Expect cards to come, particularly in midfield where both sides will fight hardest for control. Over 3.5 cards is worth a look.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Match Result Senegal to Win
Both Teams To Score No
Total Corners Over 9.5

Senegal winning to a clean sheet while generating plenty of corner traffic fits the pattern of a dominant away performance where Ethiopia simply cannot live with the quality on show.

Final Match Prediction

Senegal have too much for Ethiopia when all is said and done. Vieira’s squad is stacked with Premier League and Champions League level talent, and even in inconsistent form, the Lions of Teranga should have enough to pick apart an Ethiopian side that is still working its way back into AFCON qualifying. Ethiopia will give it a proper go in front of their home fans, and the opening spell could be competitive, but expect Senegal’s quality to tell as the game opens up.

Predicted score: Ethiopia 0-2 Senegal.
