The opening day of the WTA 1000 event in Beijing keeps the seeds tucked away for now, meaning we get a card full of lower ranked players who all have genuine reason to believe this could be the start of something big. There is real quality scattered across these first round matches and some genuinely difficult calls to make. Here is how I see Wednesday playing out in the Chinese capital.

Oleksandra Oliynykova vs Yue Yuan

These two have not met before so there is no head to head record to lean on. On paper Oliynykova sits considerably higher in the rankings, but that gap flatters her more than it reflects the actual difference in quality between these two players right now. Yuan is playing on home soil in front of a supportive crowd and that matters, particularly in a tight match where momentum and nerves play a big role.

This one feels like it will go deep into a deciding set with execution on the crucial points separating them. Yuan’s familiarity with the conditions and the lift she will get from the crowd could just tip things in her favour when it matters most.

Mayar Sherif vs Polina Kudermetova

Sherif leads their head to head at one win apiece against Kudermetova. Sherif had a genuinely impressive run earlier this season on clay and climbed the rankings as a result, but her clay form tells only part of the story. Away from that surface she is a considerably less threatening proposition and the ranking advantage she carries into this match does not tell the full story.

Kudermetova is the more comfortable operator on a quicker hard court and I think she is actually the better player in this specific context. She has a real opportunity here and I would not be at all surprised to see her come through in a tight three setter.

Daria Snigur vs Katarzyna Kawa

Snigur leads this head to head one match to nil after beating Kawa in the Australian Open qualifying rounds earlier this year. That result was no fluke. Snigur has been one of the more consistent performers on tour this season, working her way up into the top 50 and showing she belongs at this level week in week out.

Kawa is a seasoned competitor but she has not shown the kind of form that would suggest she can turn this one around. Snigur is the cleaner, more consistent player and should be able to impose herself without too many problems.

Taylah Preston vs Tamara Korpatsch

Another first meeting between two players with a genuine ranking gap between them, though again the numbers do not tell the full story. Korpatsch has built her current ranking position largely on the back of strong performances on clay and she is a different animal on faster hard courts where her game does not suit the conditions anywhere near as well.

Preston on the other hand is well suited to this surface and comes in with a genuine chance to cause what would technically be an upset but arguably should not be viewed as one given the surface dynamic at play. This should be a close match throughout but I fancy Preston to edge it.
