Who do you think will win?

There is something fascinating about watching two struggling nations collide in a competition where the stakes are genuinely high. Poland and Romania both arrive in Warsaw without a single win between them from their opening two Nations League fixtures, which means this is already shaping up to be a genuine four pointer. Neutral fans might not fill their diary with Nations League fixtures as a rule, but when you have two teams this desperate for points, the intensity tends to take care of itself.

The broader context adds another layer too. Poland missed out on the 2026 World Cup and came into this competition needing to rebuild some momentum ahead of the Euro 2028 qualifiers. Romania are in an even more precarious spot. Lose in Warsaw and they are staring down the barrel of relegation from League B. High stakes, wounded pride, and two managers under pressure. That is a decent recipe for an absorbing evening of football.

Poland vs Romania Match Details

This UEFA Nations League Group B4 fixture takes place at the Stadion Narodowy in Warsaw, with Poland hosting Romania in what is fast becoming a must not lose situation for both sides. The competition format means that the bottom side in the group faces relegation to League C, so there is genuine jeopardy beyond just bragging rights at this stage of the group.

Team News

Neither camp is working with a completely clean bill of health, and both managers have selection calls to make that go beyond just fitness concerns.

  • Matty Cash has been carrying a minor issue after playing twice for Aston Villa before the international break, which puts his place at right back under scrutiny
  • Przemyslaw Frankowski is the likely replacement at right back if Cash is not risked
  • Robert Lewandowski is expected to return to lead the line after Poland experimented with their shape against Sweden
  • Bartosz Slisz and Michal Skoras are pushing for starts in central midfield and on the flank
  • For Romania, Virgil Ghita and Tudor Baluta are in contention to come back into the side in defence and midfield
  • Daniel Birligea scored against Bosnia and Herzegovina and looks set to keep his place in attack

Predicted Lineups

Jan Urban looks set to abandon the back three that was tried against Sweden and return to a more familiar defensive four. With Frankowski likely coming in for Cash on the right, the shape should be more solid and recognisable. Lewandowski leads the line, Szymanski operates just behind him, and there is enough quality through the middle with Zielinski pulling the strings to cause Romania problems.

Poland predicted lineup: Bulka; Frankowski, Potulski, Bednarek, Kiwior; Skoras, Zielinski, Slisz, Kaminski; Szymanski; Lewandowski

Gheorghe Hagi may go back to a back three for Romania after that shape gave Sweden more trouble on matchday one than the four that was used against Bosnia. Birligea keeps his place after his goal, with Man and Hagi junior providing the attacking threat. Baluta comes into midfield and Ghita slots back into the defensive unit.

Romania predicted lineup: Radu; Ghita, Coubis, Dragusin; Ratiu, Marin, Baluta, Bancu; Hagi; Man, Birligea

Recent Form

Poland’s form under Jan Urban makes for uncomfortable reading. Five wins from 12 games in charge, and the opponents those wins came against tell their own story: Finland, New Zealand, Lithuania, Malta and Albania. There is no shame in beating those sides, but equally you would hope for more as the manager of a nation with the quality Poland have. They are now five games without a win, and the 3-1 defeat to Sweden showed defensive vulnerabilities that Romania will be well aware of.

That said, Poland’s two fixtures in this Nations League group have both been against 2026 World Cup participants in Sweden and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Context matters. They showed they could keep it tight in the goalless draw with Bosnia, even if the Sweden defeat was a step backwards. Urban needs this result badly, and the players know it too. Home advantage and a wounded opponent could be the catalyst that gets them moving.

Romania’s form is arguably more alarming. Across their last eight fixtures they have managed just two wins, and those came against San Marino and Wales. More worrying still is the fact that they have not kept a single clean sheet in that run. Five goals have been shipped in their two Nations League outings alone, including conceding four at home to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Going behind early has been a recurring theme, and if Poland get the first goal in Warsaw, Romania could find themselves chasing the game in difficult circumstances.

Head-to-Head Record

These two have not met since the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, which tells you how rarely their paths cross on the international stage. The last meeting between them was a home win for Poland in June 2017, with the Poles running out comfortable 3-1 winners on that occasion. There is not a huge body of recent head to head data to work from, but what exists points in Poland’s favour on home soil.

The gap since they last played each other is worth noting as well. Both squads have changed considerably since that qualifier, so reading too much into a nine year old result would be foolish. What it does confirm is that Poland have shown they can handle Romania when the occasion demands it.

Key Stats

  • Romania have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last eight matches across all competitions
  • Poland are winless in their last five games but have faced two World Cup finalists in this Nations League campaign
  • Romania have conceded five goals in just two Nations League fixtures, including four at home to Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Jan Urban has won just five of his 12 matches in charge, with all five coming against lower ranked opposition

Poland vs Romania Betting Tips

The angle here is fairly clear when you look at the two squads and their recent form. Poland are flawed but have genuine quality, especially going forward when Lewandowski leads the line properly. Romania are a team that will create chances but simply cannot keep a clean sheet to save their lives right now. That combination points towards a game with goals, and one where Poland edge it without necessarily making it comfortable.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Over 2.5 goals looks the play here. Romania have not shut a game out in eight attempts, and Poland have the attacking quality to ask serious questions. Even if this is a scrappy, pressurised affair, the open nature of Romania’s defending suggests goals are coming at both ends.

Cards Prediction

With both sides under pressure and this having the feel of a tense, competitive Nations League fixture where relegation is looming, expect the referee to be kept busy. Over 3.5 cards is a reasonable call. High stakes games between nations battling for survival tend to get feisty, and neither of these squads is known for sitting back and letting things wash over them.

Correct Score Prediction

Poland 2-1 Romania feels right. The home side have enough quality to edge it, Lewandowski will be desperate to contribute, but Romania will get on the scoresheet because they simply always do at the moment. A one goal margin reflects the nervy nature of the occasion while rewarding Poland’s home advantage.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Yes for both teams to score. Romania have found the net in every recent game without exception, even when being heavily beaten. They have the attacking talent to trouble Poland, and Poland’s defensive record this Nations League campaign is not exactly impenetrable. BTTS landing here feels close to inevitable.

Corners Prediction

Over 9.5 corners is worth considering. Poland will dominate possession at home and look to get wide and deliver balls in for Lewandowski. Romania, when chasing the game, also tend to push forward and invite pressure. Both managers favour attacking shapes, which tends to produce high corner counts in games where one side is chasing.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Robert Lewandowski is the obvious shout. He may not be the force he was at his absolute peak, but he remains a serious operator in and around the box. Playing at home, motivated by a poor run of results, and back leading the line properly after Urban tinkers with the formation, Lewandowski is the man most likely to open the scoring in Warsaw.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Match Result Poland to Win
Both Teams To Score Yes
First Goalscorer Robert Lewandowski

Poland winning while both teams score and Lewandowski getting on the sheet all flow naturally from the same reading of this game, making them a tidy combination in a bet builder.

Final Match Prediction

Poland need this win badly, and they are getting it at the right time. Romania are a team whose defensive problems are deep rooted right now, and facing a Polish side with genuine attacking quality in front of their own supporters in Warsaw is not the fixture you want when you have been leaking goals at the rate Romania have. Urban gets his much needed victory, but it will not be a stroll.

Poland 2-1 Romania. The home side do enough, Lewandowski contributes, and Romania grab a consolation that does nothing to change the narrative of a group that is starting to leave them behind. A huge three points for Poland in their bid to avoid their own relegation worries.
