Who do you think will win?

Egypt come into this friendly on the back of a statement performance in Juba, five goals scored and none conceded, with Omar Marmoush finding form at international level again and the Pharaohs looking like a side with genuine momentum. South Africa, meanwhile, also put five past Eritrea just days ago, but Pitso Mosimane has made clear this fixture is about getting minutes into players who have not featured heavily in the qualifiers. That fundamental difference in approach shapes everything about how you view this game.

Hossam Hassan is under a bit of pressure. The Salah situation has generated noise, the Angola draw felt flat for a home crowd, and there are question marks about the dressing room atmosphere. That context matters because Hassan needs a comfortable home result to settle things down, while Mosimane is treating Sunday as a squad rotation exercise before next year’s AFCON. These two teams are pointing in very different directions when it comes to motivation.

Egypt vs South Africa Match Details

The game takes place at Cairo International Stadium, Egypt’s home fortress and a venue that has witnessed some of the Pharaohs’ most important results in recent years. This is a standalone international friendly, the only one Bafana Bafana have scheduled before the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which gives it a certain weight for Mosimane’s planning even if the starting lineup suggests he is keeping his powder dry.

Team News

Egypt have several notable absentees, though their depth has been strong enough to absorb the losses so far. South Africa are heading into this with a heavily rotated squad and a couple of midfield injuries that restrict Mosimane’s options in the engine room.

  • Mohamed Salah is not expected to feature despite earlier suggestions he might rejoin the squad
  • Yasser Ibrahim is out injured, as is Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet and goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy
  • Ahmed Fatouh has a muscle injury keeping him sidelined until late October, with Karim Hafez set to start at left back
  • Mohamed Abdelmonem has returned to Nice by mutual agreement after not travelling to Juba
  • For South Africa, Teboho Mokoena is ruled out after picking up a knock late against Guinea
  • Bathusi Aubaas is also unavailable after being forced off early in the Eritrea win
  • Aubrey Modiba is a doubt at left back after missing the Eritrea game
  • Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Evidence Makgopa are both absent through injury

Predicted Lineups

Egypt’s lineup is expected to look close to the one that tore South Sudan apart in Juba, with Fatouh the main enforced change. Mostafa Shobeir starts in goal behind a back four of Mohamed Hany, Hossam Abdelmaguid, Ramadan Rabia and Hafez. Mostafa Zico and Omar Marmoush will carry the attacking threat, with Marmoush in particular under the spotlight to show his form holds when Salah is not in the picture alongside him.

South Africa’s selection is where it gets interesting. Mosimane has promised wholesale changes. Sipho Chaine takes over in goal from Ronwen Williams, Fawaaz Basadien and Khulumani Ndamane come in across the back line, and the likes of Cassius Mailula, Tashreeq Matthews and Puso Dithejane are all expected to get significant minutes. With Sphephelo Sithole and Brooklyn Poggenpoel, who only made his debut in the Eritrea game, as the main defensive midfield options after the Mokoena and Aubaas injuries, there is limited experience in the middle of the park for Bafana Bafana.

Recent Form

Egypt’s qualifying campaign has been a bit of a mixed picture. The goalless draw against Angola at home on September 25 was a stodgy, unconvincing display that gave Hassan’s critics plenty to talk about. But the response in Juba four days later was exactly what the doctor ordered. Five goals, a clean sheet, Zico on the scoresheet, Marmoush bagging a brace for his first international goals since March, and Ibrahim Adel looking sharp from the bench. That was a clinical, professional away performance from a team that knew exactly what was required.

South Africa’s qualifying form has been equally impressive on paper. The 2-1 win over Guinea at Orlando Stadium showed some grit, coming from behind through substitute Samukele Kabini after conceding an equaliser. Then came the 5-0 dismantling of Eritrea in Cairo, with Relebohile Mofokeng grabbing two and Oswin Appollis running the show from wide. Back to back wins with a plus six goal difference is a fine start to Group D life under Mosimane.

The caveat for South Africa is that Eritrea were not a serious test, and the side that showed up against them will look very different from the one Mosimane is expected to field here. Egypt, by contrast, are fielding something close to their first choice shape. That gap in preparation level is the single biggest factor in assessing this friendly.

Head-to-Head Record

The most recent meeting between these sides came at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on December 26, when Egypt edged past a ten man South Africa through a Mohamed Salah penalty in the first half. A 1-0 win that was tighter than it sounds, with Egypt having to defend their lead for a significant portion of the game. Egypt have generally been the stronger side in this fixture historically, particularly at home, where their crowd and their organisation tends to make Cairo a difficult place to visit.

That AFCON encounter was a reminder that South Africa can make games uncomfortable, even when they are down to ten men, but without their strongest lineup and with Mosimane happy to use this as a development exercise, it would take a brave call to back Bafana Bafana to repeat anything like that kind of defensive resilience today.

Key Stats

  • Egypt have scored five goals and conceded zero across their two AFCON qualifiers, suggesting the defensive unit is well drilled even without some of their headline names
  • Marmoush has now reached 13 international goals, his brace in Juba was his first for Egypt since March and he will be the main creative outlet in Salah’s absence
  • South Africa are without both first choice defensive midfielders in Mokoena and Aubaas, leaving a young and inexperienced engine room to cope against a well organised Egypt side

Egypt vs South Africa Betting Tips

Egypt at home, near full strength, with plenty to prove after the Salah drama and the flat Angola display, against a Bafana Bafana side that Mosimane is openly rotating ahead of AFCON. The angle here is straightforward: Egypt to win and probably to score more than once, while South Africa’s makeshift back line gives them a decent chance of finding the net at least once themselves. It is the kind of fixture where you lean into the hosts but acknowledge the away side have the attacking tools to make it interesting.

Correct Score Prediction

Egypt to win 2-1. The Pharaohs have the quality and the motivation to get the job done comfortably at home, but South Africa’s attacking options, even in a rotated lineup, mean a clean sheet seems slightly too much to expect given their makeshift defensive midfield pairing.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Over 2.5 goals looks the right call here. Egypt have been clinical in front of goal and South Africa, despite their defensive reshuffling, carry a real threat through Mofokeng, Mailula and Appollis. Both sides have been free scoring in qualifying and this friendly format tends to open up as managers chase game time for fringe players.

Cards Prediction

Expect a moderate card count. International friendlies rarely produce the kind of needle that drives bookings through the roof, and while there will be competitive moments, neither side has a particular reputation for racking up disciplinary issues in these fixtures. Over 2.5 cards at a push, but nothing dramatic.

Corners Prediction

Egypt on their own patch tend to dominate territory and put balls into the box regularly, especially without the threat of Salah stretching play, which means the supporting cast may rely more on crosses and set pieces. South Africa will have their moments going forward too. Over 9.5 corners feels like a reasonable marker for a fixture with attacking intent on both sides.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Omar Marmoush is the pick here. With Salah absent, the Manchester City forward steps into the role of Egypt’s primary attacking outlet and he has just backed that up with a brace in Juba. He will want to carry that form into a home fixture with plenty riding on it for the Pharaohs’ confidence and his own standing in the squad hierarchy.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Yes. South Africa have scored in both of their qualifiers and will field attackers like Mailula and Matthews who are eager to make an impression under a new gaffer. Egypt’s defensive midfield pairing is solid but their makeshift back four, missing several regulars, could be caught by a South Africa side with genuine pace in wide areas. BTTS yes looks the smarter side of this market.

Market Selection
Match Result Egypt to Win
Both Teams To Score Yes
First Goalscorer Omar Marmoush

Egypt winning while both sides score fits neatly with Marmoush leading the charge, and all three picks are grounded in the same logic around Egypt’s attacking intent and South Africa’s rotating back line.

Final Match Prediction

Egypt 2-1 South Africa is where we land. Hassan needs a convincing home win to quiet the noise around the Salah situation and put some positivity back into the camp after that Angola stalemate. The Pharaohs have the quality, the motivation and the home advantage to get the three points. Marmoush looks sharp, Zico adds a goal threat from deep, and the supporting cast in Juba showed there is real depth when the big names are missing.

South Africa will give a decent account of themselves, Mosimane’s sides always carry an attacking spark, and a goal for Bafana Bafana feels likely given Egypt’s reshuffled personnel. But a rotated, injury hit visiting side up against a motivated home team in Cairo is a matchup that points firmly in one direction. Egypt to edge it in an entertaining one.
