CompetitionUEFA Nations League
Who do you think will win?

Cyprus have a genuine chance to put some real pressure on Montenegro at the top of League C Group 2 this weekend, and they know it. Four points from three games is a decent platform, but five points adrift of the leaders means they cannot afford to keep dropping points at home. A win here and they are very much back in the conversation at the top of this group.

Latvia, meanwhile, are in a rut that is getting harder to ignore. One point from three games, a solitary goal to their name, and four conceded. They came to this Nations League campaign off the back of a promotion playoff win over Gibraltar in March, but that momentum has completely evaporated. This is a side searching for answers, and they are running out of time to find them.

Cyprus vs Latvia Match Details

This UEFA Nations League League C Group 2 fixture takes place at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia, with Cyprus looking to build on what has been an encouraging home campaign so far. It is the fourth round of group fixtures, and with the group still very much alive, every point now carries real weight for both nations.

Team News

Cyprus are without one key player through suspension following the win over Armenia, but beyond that the gaffer has a relatively clean bill of health to work with.

  • Kostas Pileas is suspended after his red card against Armenia and will miss out. Giorgos Malekkidis is expected to slot into the left back role in his place.
  • Andronikos Kakoullis, Marcus Edwards and Loizos Loizou are all fit and in fine form after their recent performances.
  • No significant injury concerns for Akis Mantzios beyond the Pileas suspension.

Latvia have a couple of issues to manage heading into this one.

  • Roberts Savalnieks picked up an injury in the defeat to Montenegro and is unlikely to feature. Raivis Jurkovskis is set to come in for him.
  • Danila Patijcuks is also carrying a knock from that game and could be rested.
  • Markuss Strods is likely to be handed a start in midfield as a result.
  • Roberto Uldrikis had a quiet night against Montenegro and his place up front is not guaranteed, with Vladislavs Gutkovskis pushing for a start.

Predicted Lineups

Mantzios has very little reason to tinker here. He had a system that worked against Armenia, a team that dominated much of the second half after Cyprus went down to ten men, and his side still kept a clean sheet. The only enforced change is at left back where Malekkidis comes in for the suspended Pileas. Expect a compact shape with Edwards providing the creativity in behind Kakoullis.

Cyprus: Fabiano; Konomis, Kyprianou, Panagiotou, Malekkidis; Andreou, Kastanos; Loizou, Edwards, Kakoullis; Pittas

Latvia: Matrevics; Cirkin, Melniks, Cernomordijs, Vientiess, Jurkovskis; Ciganiks, Zelenkovs, Vapne, Strods; Uldrikis

Latvia boss Nicolato has decisions to make at the back and potentially up front. If Gutkovskis gets the nod over Uldrikis, it will be a clear signal that the coaching staff want more physicality and directness from their centre forward. The back line changes are forced rather than chosen, which never helps cohesion.

Recent Form

Cyprus are heading into this in a really good place mentally. Yes, they lost their opening group game to Montenegro 2 to 1, but that now looks like a blip rather than a pattern. The goalless draw away in Latvia showed defensive organisation, and then the 2 to 0 win over Armenia was genuinely impressive given they played almost the entire second half with ten men. Both goals came inside the first 32 minutes through Konomis and Kakoullis, and then they dug in and held firm. That kind of result builds belief in a squad.

Latvia, on the other hand, are in real trouble form wise. Four defeats in their last five across all competitions, with only a draw to show otherwise. They lost to Lithuania and the Faroe Islands in the Baltic Cup, and then suffered defeats to Armenia and Montenegro in this very group. The 0 to 0 draw against Cyprus at home in the second round of Nations League fixtures is genuinely their best result in recent memory, and even that came without scoring. One goal in three Nations League games, four conceded. That is not the record of a side ready to turn things around on the road.

What concerns me most about Latvia is not just the results but the manner of them. They have looked toothless going forward and fragile at the back when put under sustained pressure. Cyprus at home are exactly the type of side who will expose that.

Head-to-Head Record

Here is where it gets interesting. Cyprus have actually failed to beat Latvia in either of their previous two meetings. The most recent was that 0 to 0 draw in Riga earlier in this Nations League campaign, and before that these sides have not been separated either. So Latvia have shown they can frustrate Cyprus, and that is worth acknowledging.

However, there is a significant difference between Latvia defending at home with the crowd behind them and doing the same job away from home while carrying injuries and a confidence crisis. The pattern of recent head to head results gives Latvia some hope, but the context around this specific fixture heavily favours the home side.

Key Stats

  • Cyprus are unbeaten in their last two matches and kept clean sheets in both, including one with ten men for most of the second half.
  • Latvia have scored just once in three Nations League games and have lost four of their last five across all competitions.
  • Cyprus have not beaten Latvia in two previous meetings, with both ending level, which makes this fixture slightly harder to call than the form suggests.

Cyprus vs Latvia Betting Tips

The form book points clearly in one direction here. Cyprus at home, in good shape, with Latvia in a genuine crisis of confidence and missing key personnel. The head to head record provides a small note of caution, but I am not going to let two previous draws completely override what looks like a really strong position for the home side. My picks reflect that confidence while staying grounded in what the numbers are actually telling us.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

I am going No on BTTS here. Latvia have only scored once in this entire Nations League campaign, and that attacking poverty looks unlikely to change on the road against a Cyprus side that just kept a clean sheet with ten men. Cyprus have the quality to score, but Latvia finding the net feels like a stretch given everything we have seen from them lately.

Cards Prediction

Latvia are going to have to be physical and disruptive if they want to stay in this game, and a frustrated away side chasing the game typically picks up bookings. Cyprus will be aggressive in pressing the ball and winning it back quickly. I would expect a decent card count in this one, with Latvia more likely to give fouls away as they scramble to contain the home side. Over cards looks the smarter play.

Corners Prediction

Cyprus are going to be on the front foot for large periods of this match, getting wide through Kakoullis and Edwards and whipping balls into the box. Latvia will sit deep and try to absorb pressure, which typically means plenty of corners for the attacking side. I am backing over on corners here, with Cyprus likely to rack up the bulk of them as they push for the win.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Under 2.5 goals is the call for me. These two sides have met twice and not scored between them in either game. Latvia are clearly not a free scoring outfit right now, and Cyprus, while capable of nicking goals, have been quite measured and controlled rather than going all out attack. I expect Cyprus to get the job done without this turning into a thriller.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Both Teams To Score No
Total Corners Over 8.5
Total Goals Under 2.5

A Cyprus win with a clean sheet, plenty of corner pressure from the home side, and a low scoring affair all point to the same kind of game: controlled, tidy, and decided by a single moment of quality rather than an open shootout.

Final Match Prediction

Cyprus to win 1 to 0. I think this is the type of game where the home side grind out the result rather than blowing the opposition away. Latvia will defend with discipline in spells, but their lack of threat going forward means they will not be able to pin Cyprus back and eventually something will break the deadlock.

A goal from Kakoullis or Edwards, who are both full of confidence right now, feels likely, and once Cyprus get in front I expect them to manage the game efficiently. They have already shown they can hold a lead under pressure. Latvia need the point far more than the three, but they simply do not have the attacking tools to make that happen away from home in this form.
