Fluminense
CoritibaFluminense have been an absolute revelation since Marcao took the reins, and the timing of this fixture could not suit them better. After a horrendous seven game winless stretch in the summer that cost Luis Zubeldia his job, the Rio giants have put together a run of six wins from their last nine across all competitions, most recently dismantling Corinthians 3-1. Add to that a Copa Libertadores semi final against Palmeiras on the horizon and a genuine shot at finishing third in the Brasileiro, and the mood at the Maracana is buzzing again. Coritiba, meanwhile, are heading into this one having just been battered 5-0 by Vasco da Gama and carrying the worst defensive record of any side in the top half of the table. The contrast in momentum could hardly be sharper.
Coritiba had looked like they might gatecrash the continental qualification spots after going unbeaten in four straight games and picking up ten points from twelve. But that Vasco hammering has dragged them back to ninth, with Copa Sudamericana looking like a more realistic target now than the Libertadores. It is a familiar story for newly promoted sides trying to find their level, and a trip to one of Brazil’s great stadiums against a side full of confidence is about the toughest test you can face at this stage of the season.
This is a gameweek 29 fixture in the 2026 Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A, played at the iconic Estadio do Maracana in Rio de Janeiro. Fluminense are the home side and will be leaning on their formidable record at this ground as they look to apply further pressure on the top three.
Fluminense have a few notable absentees heading into this one, though Marcao does get one welcome boost with Yeferson Soteldo set to return to the starting lineup. The hosts are without some key names though, and the absences do shape the team sheet.
Coritiba head into this trip with a lengthy injury list of their own, which only makes a tough fixture even more difficult to navigate.
Marcao looks set to set up in an attacking shape with Soteldo coming straight back into the front line to replace the suspended Cannobio. Hulk leading the line despite being well into his thirties still offers a physical threat, and Kevin Serna on the right brings the kind of directness that has caused problems for sides all season. The back four looks settled, with Fabio providing real experience and composure behind them.
Fluminense: Fabio; Xavier, Silva, Diaz, Rene; Hercules, Martinelli; Serna, Acosta, Soteldo; Hulk
Coritiba boss Fernando Seabra has to try and shore up a back line that has been leaking goals at an alarming rate. With several players unavailable, he will need his remaining defenders to be absolutely switched on. Gomez and Santos will be asked to do a lot of work in midfield to try and protect the defensive unit.
Coritiba: Morisco; Melo, Moledo, Coser, Tissi; Gomez, Santos; Lopes, Josue, Fabinho; Rocha
Fluminense’s upturn since Marcao replaced Zubeldia has been remarkable. The new gaffer walked straight into a 3-2 win over Palmeiras, with Kevin Serna and Germano Cano grabbing late goals to seal it, and the confidence that result gave the squad has been visible ever since. Six wins from nine across all competitions, a Copa Libertadores semi final booked, and a 3-1 win over Corinthians in their most recent outing tells you everything about the direction this club is heading right now. At the Maracana specifically they have been outstanding, winning ten of fourteen home league games this season. That is a phenomenal record and it makes them incredibly difficult to beat in front of their own supporters.
Coritiba’s story is a more turbulent one. They looked like potential Libertadores contenders just a few weeks ago after collecting ten from twelve, but the 5-0 thumping at Vasco was a reality check of the harshest kind. That was their heaviest defeat of the season, coming on the back of a 3-3 draw with Athletico that already showed the cracks in their defensive structure. They have now failed to keep a clean sheet in eight straight games across all competitions, and their tally of 43 league goals conceded is the highest of any team in the top eleven. Going on the road against one of the most in form sides in the country is a really uncomfortable position to be in carrying that sort of defensive baggage.
The away form for Coritiba is also worth flagging. Only one win from their last five on the road, and five goals shipped in their most recent away fixture, gives you a pretty clear picture of how vulnerable they can be when they have to come out of their own backyard. Fluminense are going to fancy this one.
The reverse fixture back in April was a 1-1 draw and their first meeting in two and a half years, so there is not a huge recent sample to draw from. But the historical record at the Maracana is staggering and tells a very clear story. Fluminense have not lost to Coritiba at home since October 2011, a run that stretches across ten straight meetings without defeat, winning six and drawing four. That kind of consistency over such a long stretch at a specific venue is not luck, it is dominance, and there is no obvious reason to think this fixture breaks that sequence.
Everything points in one direction here. Fluminense are full of confidence, they are strong at home, Coritiba cannot keep a clean sheet to save their lives right now, and the visitors are carrying a raft of absentees into one of the toughest away fixtures in the division. Marcao’s side are the clear play across multiple markets, and there are some genuinely juicy angles to explore beyond the straightforward match result.
Back over 2.5 goals with some confidence here. Fluminense have been banging them in at home all season, Coritiba’s defence has been a sieve in recent weeks, and the hosts are going to come flying out of the blocks looking to make a statement. Goals feel inevitable in this one.
Expect a high corner count. Fluminense press forward in waves at the Maracana and their wide players in Serna and Soteldo will be getting into crossing positions regularly. Coritiba will look to defend deep and absorb pressure, which tends to generate corners for the side doing the attacking. Over 9.5 corners looks a reasonable shout.
Yeferson Soteldo is the pick here at what should be a decent price given he is returning from a spell on the bench. The Venezuelan winger is a constant threat in and around the box and has the technical quality to unlock a shaky Coritiba backline. Coming back refreshed after missing the Corinthians game, he will be eager to make an immediate impact.
Coritiba are going to be under the cosh for long stretches of this match, and when a defensive unit is struggling and being stretched repeatedly, cynical fouls and yellow cards tend to follow. Back over 3.5 cards in total as the visitors try to slow Fluminense down in the second half.
This is a tricky one. Coritiba have shown they can score goals, but Fluminense have been solid defensively at home and with Coritiba missing several attacking options through injury, the visitors look light up front. Lean towards BTTS No here, with Fluminense capable of keeping it clean in a controlled performance.
| Market | Selection |
|---|---|
| Match Result | Fluminense to Win |
| Over/Under Goals | Over 2.5 Goals |
| First Goalscorer | Yeferson Soteldo |
Fluminense’s home dominance, Coritiba’s leaky defence, and Soteldo returning hungry from the bench all point to a high scoring home win, making these three picks a natural fit together.
Fluminense 3-1 Coritiba. The hosts have too much quality, too much momentum, and too strong a home record in this fixture for Coritiba to cause a serious upset. Marcao’s men will put on a show at the Maracana, drive themselves into the top three, and keep their preparations for that Libertadores semi final in the best possible shape.
Coritiba will likely grab a consolation, because they have shown throughout the season that they carry a goal threat, but defensively they are just not equipped to deal with what Fluminense can throw at them on this particular night. A convincing home win is the most logical outcome, and that is exactly what we are backing.
