Who do you think will win?

Lille are back at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy looking to put a first defeat of the season firmly behind them, while Le Havre arrive in Villeneuve-d’Ascq with the worst record in Ligue 1 and a threadbare defensive unit. The question for bettors is simple enough: does this set up as a comfortable home win, or is there enough about the hosts’ schedule and the visitors’ stubbornness to give this one a bit more edge than it looks on paper?

Davide Ancelotti’s side have impressed in patches this season but carry the weight of a Champions League trip to Arsenal just days after this fixture. Le Havre, for their part, have shown they can take a point against anyone, even if they have not yet managed to take three. Let’s break it all down.

Lille vs Le Havre Match Details

The fixture takes place at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Villeneuve-d’Ascq, Lille’s modern 50,000-capacity home, as part of the Ligue 1 season. Lille will be playing in front of their own supporters for the first time since the defeat at Nice, with a significant European test looming on the horizon the following week.

Team News

Lille are in a good place fitness-wise. Ancelotti has the luxury of a near fully fit squad heading into this one, though he may well have one eye on the trip to the Emirates and decide to manage some players’ minutes accordingly.

  • Olivier Giroud available and fit after featuring at Nice
  • Ethan Mbappe and Hakon Arnar Haraldsson both available
  • Summer signings Ayase Ueda, Basar Onal and Mads Kjaergaard all settled and in contention
  • No fresh injury concerns reported for the home side

Le Havre are far less fortunate. Didier Digard is trying to piece together a back four from limited materials, and several of his options at the back are currently unavailable.

  • Goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi-Nzau out long term with an Achilles injury picked up in preseason
  • Forward Felix Mambimbi also sidelined long term with the same problem
  • Defenders Stephan Zagadou, Timothee Pembele and Paul Argney all missing through injury
  • Digard working with a stretched and unsettled defensive group

Predicted Lineups

Ancelotti has a selection headache of the best possible kind. With everyone available, he will likely keep faith with the front line that has clicked best so far, though rotating a player or two with Arsenal in mind is not out of the question. Giroud leading the line at 40 years old remains one of the more charming storylines in French football right now, and there is little reason to drop him at home.

Lille expected lineup: Ozer; Santos, Ngoy, Alexsandro, Perraud; Andre, Bentaleb; Haraldsson, Mbappe, Ueda; Giroud

Le Havre are likely to set up with a degree of pragmatism given their defensive shortages and the size of the task ahead. Digard will want to be organised and hard to break down, though the personnel available to him in central defence makes that easier said than done. Japanese arrivals Kaito Mizuta and Sota Nakamura add some freshness to the forward areas after featuring in recent weeks.

Le Havre expected lineup: Gallon; Seko, Touba, Mwanga; Jelert, Ebonog, Richardson, Ouziad; Ndiaye, Samatta; Maja

Recent Form

Lille started the season with genuine purpose under Ancelotti, a man appointed in June to succeed Bruno Genesio and tasked with maintaining the club’s upward trajectory. Three wins and a draw from his opening four games in charge briefly had Lille sitting at the summit of Ligue 1, and the early signs suggested the transition in the dugout had been seamless. The defeat at Nice on September 20 brought that run to an end but it would be harsh to read too much into one loss away at a decent side. They still sit fourth with ten points from five matches and have scored eight times, which puts them among the more productive attacks in the division.

It is worth noting the broader context too. Bouaddi departed for Manchester City in a deal reportedly worth around 95 million euros, and Matias Fernandez-Pardo headed to Newcastle for somewhere in the region of 60 million euros. That is serious squad disruption offset by the additions of Ueda, Onal and Kjaergaard. The fact Ancelotti has kept the team ticking over and competitive across both Ligue 1 and the Champions League suggests the group has adapted well. A first European night ended in a 2-3 home defeat to Real Betis, so there are still rough edges, but the overall picture is of a team with genuine quality.

Le Havre have been wretched in front of goal and porous at the back. A 0-1 opening home defeat to Monaco set the tone, and while they showed enough to earn a point at Lyon in a 1-1 draw, subsequent results have been poor. A 1-2 home loss to Brest, a goalless stalemate with Angers and then a 2-3 home defeat to Toulouse on matchday five leave them rooted to the bottom of Ligue 1 with just two points. Four goals scored and seven conceded across five games tells you the problems are at both ends of the pitch. Digard guided this club to survival in each of his first two full seasons, finishing 14th last term just three points above the playoff place, but this season looks considerably harder given the squad losses and the mounting injury list.

Head-to-Head Record

Lille have been the dominant side in recent meetings between these two clubs, winning four of the last six encounters and losing only once in that period, a February 2025 defeat that stands as an anomaly rather than a trend. The most recent visit of Le Havre to the Stade Pierre-Mauroy ended 1-1 in May, with Haraldsson opening the scoring before Issa Soumare’s equaliser denied Lille the win on that occasion. That draw shows Le Havre are capable of nicking a result or at least making it uncomfortable, but the broader picture strongly favours the home side.

Le Havre’s away form and their general vulnerability this season make it hard to see them replicating that point-earning effort from May, particularly given the defensive absentees they are currently dealing with.

Key Stats

  • Le Havre are the only club in Ligue 1 yet to win a match this season, taking just two points from five games
  • Lille have scored eight goals in five league games, averaging over one and a half per match at home and away
  • Le Havre have conceded seven goals in five games and have lost three of their four away fixtures this term

Lille vs Le Havre Betting Tips

This fixture sets up with Lille as clear favourites and rightly so. The home side have the quality, the motivation and the squad depth to put a bottom-of-the-table side to the sword. The one caveat worth flagging is the Arsenal game on Tuesday, which gives Ancelotti a reason to be cautious with workloads, but even a rotated Lille XI should have enough to beat a Le Havre side this short of form and numbers. The angles worth exploring are around goals and specific market plays rather than trying to find value on the away side at this point.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Lille have been averaging well over two goals per game and Le Havre have been shipping goals regularly. With both teams carrying attacking intent at different levels and the visitors’ back four stretched by injuries, backing over 2.5 goals looks like a solid foundation for this one.

Cards Prediction

Le Havre have been under pressure throughout the early weeks of the season and a trip to Lille when you are low on confidence and light on defensive options tends to lead to some desperate challenges at the back. The visitors are likely to give away fouls as they try to keep Lille’s attack quiet, and a card or two for the away side feels probable. Backing over 3.5 cards in the match looks reasonable.

Correct Score Prediction

Lille have the firepower to make this comfortable but Le Havre’s willingness to at least have a go going forward, as shown in their 1-1 draw at Lyon, means a clean sheet is not guaranteed. A 2-1 home win feels like it captures the most likely shape of the game: Lille in control for large spells, Le Havre grabbing a consolation as the game opens up.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Le Havre have scored in four of their five league games this season, finding the net even in defeats. Lille’s back four has conceded four goals across five matches, showing they are not completely airtight. Given that track record on both sides, BTTS Yes carries genuine appeal here despite the gulf in class between the two squads.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Hakon Arnar Haraldsson is the pick here. The Icelandic winger has been one of Ancelotti’s most dynamic outlets, he scored the opener in the most recent home meeting with Le Havre, and he combines well with Ethan Mbappe in behind Giroud. He is the kind of player who loves to arrive late into the box, and against a Le Havre side that will struggle to track runners, he is well positioned to open the scoring.

Corners Prediction

Lille are an attack-minded side that gets bodies forward and creates a high volume of chances. Le Havre, when under pressure, tend to defend deep and concede territory. That combination usually drives up corner counts at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy. Backing over 9.5 corners in this match looks well supported by both sides’ tendencies this season.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Match Result Lille to Win
Both Teams To Score Yes
Total Corners Over 9.5

Lille winning while both teams find the net and the corner count runs high fits the expected shape of a game where the hosts control possession and territory but Le Havre have enough about them to at least contribute to an open, attacking encounter.

Final Match Prediction

Lille should have too much for a Le Havre side that has yet to find its footing this season and arrives with injuries all over the defensive unit. Ancelotti’s men will want a response after the Nice defeat and their home record gives them a platform to deliver one. Giroud, Haraldsson and Mbappe are a handful for any back four, let alone one as patched up as the one Digard will field here.

The Champions League trip to Arsenal a few days later adds a layer of complexity, but even a slightly managed performance from Lille should be enough to see off this particular opposition. Final score prediction: Lille 2-1 Le Havre.
