CompetitionEnglish League Championship
Who do you think will win?

Wolverhampton Wanderers have made a decent enough fist of their first Championship campaign in years, but this is the week where character gets tested. Coming off the back of a 1-0 defeat at Middlesbrough, with automatic promotion still very much within reach, Peixoto’s side cannot afford to let the gap grow. Three points at Molineux on Tuesday night keeps them in the hunt. Drop more ground and the wobbles could start.

Bolton Wanderers arrive in similarly awkward shape. Back-to-back wins before the international break hinted at a team finding their feet in the second tier, but a 2-0 home loss to Stoke on Saturday, going down to ten men early doors, was a proper reality check. At 17th with just three points separating them from the bottom three, Steven Schumacher needs a result from somewhere, and a trip to Molineux is not exactly the fixture you circle as an easy three points.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Bolton Wanderers Match Details

This Championship fixture takes place at Molineux Stadium in Wolverhampton. Wolves are hosting in front of what is sure to be a vocal home crowd, keen to see their side respond to the weekend setback, while Bolton make the trip knowing a positive result would dramatically shift their outlook heading into the weeks ahead.

Team News

Wolves have a couple of familiar names missing, though the squad depth should allow Peixoto to name a strong side regardless. Bolton head into this one still dealing with an injury at the back that has disrupted their defensive shape in recent weeks.

  • Yerson Mosquera remains out injured for Wolves at centre back
  • Raul Jimenez is also unavailable, keeping Wolves without their senior attacking option
  • Adam Armstrong is expected to continue leading the line in Jimenez’s absence
  • Chris Forino-Joseph misses out for Bolton after picking up an injury that has kept him out for three matches now
  • Eoin Toal is set to continue alongside Ben Davis in the Bolton back four to cover the absentee

Predicted Lineups

Peixoto looks set to keep faith with the side that has served him well for most of the season. Armstrong up top, flanked by Rodrigo Gomes and Mateus Mane, with Fer Lopez tucked in behind. Lopez has been quietly excellent this season, chipping in with four goals in eight league outings, and he gives Wolves a real creative threat in that pocket of space. The midfield picks itself around Andre and Munetsi, though Doyle, James and Bellegarde will all be pushing hard for minutes.

Bolton will line up with Gavin Bazunu in goal behind a back four that features Larrazabal and Conway as the full backs, with Toal and Davies shielded by Josh Sheehan and Ethan Erhahon in the engine room. Junior Iling and Thierry Gale provide the width, with Dalby up front. Gale is well worth watching. He scored five goals in three international appearances for Barbados over the break and will arrive here buzzing with confidence.

Recent Form

Wolves went into the international break on the back of four wins from seven Championship outings, including back-to-back 1-0 victories over Sheffield United and West Brom. That is a solid return for a newly relegated side, and the manner of those wins, keeping clean sheets against two sides with genuine quality, suggested this is a defensively well-organised outfit. The defeat at Middlesbrough at the weekend was a blip rather than a crisis. Will Lankshear’s goal on the hour was the only difference, and Wolves will have felt hard done by on that one.

Bolton’s form is a lot more turbulent. They lost four on the spin at one point, then turned it around with wins over Cardiff and Norwich, the latter a 4-3 thriller away from home that suggested they could cause problems going forward. But then Stoke came to town on Saturday and the wheels fell off again. Down to ten men inside twenty minutes, two goals down and Theo Bair’s late consolation was too little too late. That is now ten goals conceded in four away games, which is a deeply alarming trend heading into a trip to a side chasing promotion.

The contrast in momentum tells its own story. Wolves are fifth and firmly in the promotion conversation. Bolton are looking over their shoulder at the relegation zone. One team is building something, the other is still trying to work out what they are.

Head-to-Head Record

These two clubs do not meet all that often at this level, but when they do, the fixture tends to favour the home side. Wolves will carry confidence on their own patch, and there is little in the head to head record to suggest Bolton travel well to Molineux. The gulf between where both clubs are in the division right now reflects a broader quality gap that the historical record has tended to bear out too.

Key Stats

  • Bolton have conceded ten goals in just four away Championship games this season, a defensive record that makes life very hard on the road
  • Wolves are unbeaten at Molineux in the league this season and have kept clean sheets in their most recent home wins
  • Fer Lopez has scored four league goals in eight appearances, making him one of the division’s more productive players in his position
  • Thierry Gale scored five goals in three games for Barbados during the break, arriving here in electric form

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Bolton Wanderers Betting Tips

The shape of this one feels fairly clear to me. Wolves at home, motivated to bounce back, with a structurally sound squad against a Bolton side leaking goals on the road and short of a man at the back. The value is in backing Wolves to control this, keep it tight at one end and do enough to win comfortably.

Corners Prediction

Wolves love to work their wide men and get balls into the box, particularly with Gomes and Mane providing width and Trippier bombing forward from right back. With Bolton likely to sit deep and absorb pressure, expect plenty of Wolves territory and a corner count skewed heavily in the hosts’ favour. Over 10 corners in the match looks a reasonable shout, with Wolves taking the lion’s share.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Fer Lopez is the pick here. Four goals in eight league games from a position just behind the striker is a genuinely impressive return, and with Bolton’s centre backs under pressure and Jimenez’s absence meaning the Wolves forward line needs goals from across the unit, Lopez has been stepping up all season. He carries a real threat arriving late into the box and should get chances in this one.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

BTTS No feels right here. Wolves have been keeping clean sheets against decent opposition and Bolton have not scored in their last two league outings. With Forino-Joseph missing and the Trotters’ back line already under pressure, the focus for Schumacher’s side is likely to be defensive survival rather than going for it up top. Wolves to win to nil carries genuine appeal.

Correct Score Prediction

Wolves 2-0 Bolton. The hosts have the quality to open Bolton up through the wide areas, Lopez and Armstrong are both finding the net, and Bolton’s away defensive record is genuinely terrible. A comfortable home win without the need for a late flourish feels about right.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Under 3.5 goals. This is not going to be a six-goal thriller. Wolves are defensively solid and unlikely to concede, while Bolton are struggling to score away from home. The goals in this one come from Wolves being clinical rather than both sides going hell for leather, so a 2-0 or even 1-0 keeps the total nice and low.

Cards Prediction

Bolton are going to be under the cosh for large spells of this game, and when a team is chasing shadows and putting out fires defensively, the cards tend to follow. Their midfield will be working hard to disrupt Wolves, and with frustration mounting if they fall behind, expect three or four bookings across the ninety minutes. Over 3.5 cards in the match is worth a look.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Match Result Wolverhampton Wanderers to Win
Both Teams To Score No
First Goalscorer Fer Lopez

Three picks that all point in the same direction: Wolves winning cleanly, Lopez getting on the scoresheet, and Bolton failing to find a way through a side that has been one of the more defensively reliable outfits in the division.

Final Match Prediction

Wolves to win 2-0. The international break disrupted the momentum they had built, but this is a home game against a side in disarray, and Peixoto’s men have the squad and the system to get back on track. Bolton will give it a go in spells, Gale could cause the odd problem down the flank, but the defensive vulnerabilities on the road are too significant to ignore.

Molineux should be a good atmosphere for a Tuesday night, and I fancy Wolves to give the crowd something to shout about. Three points, clean sheet, back in touching distance of the top two. Job done.
