Stuttgart
Atletico MadridStuttgart have been a genuine bright spot in Europe this season, but Tuesday night brings a test of a completely different magnitude. Atletico Madrid roll into the MHPArena carrying six straight wins and a defensive record that would make almost any team in the continent nervous. The question is whether Die Roten can keep their perfect Champions League record intact, or whether Simeone’s side are about to end that particular party.
There is plenty of intrigue here. Stuttgart have reasons to believe, but history is working against them in some pretty uncomfortable ways. Let’s dig into it properly.
This Champions League league phase fixture takes place at the MHPArena in Stuttgart, a ground that has developed a real European atmosphere since Die Roten returned to the continent’s top table. Stuttgart come into this having already hosted two group stage fixtures this campaign, and the home support will be crucial if they are to pull off what would be a significant result.
Stuttgart are carrying a fair few injury concerns heading into this one, and Sebastian Hoeness has some real selection headaches to work through at the back in particular.
For Atletico, the news is relatively manageable. Koke is working through a minor hamstring issue and looks set to miss out, while Cristian Romero is sidelined with an adductor problem. Johnny Cardoso, who missed the Espanyol game through illness, could come back into the starting side here.
If Zagadou and Mittelstadt are both ruled out, Hoeness looks set to shuffle the backline significantly. Finn Jeltsch and Jeff Chabot would form the centre back partnership, with Josha Vagnoman and Ramon Hendriks providing width from the fullback positions. Arthur Stiller and Promel should anchor the midfield, with Bilal El Khannouss, Deniz Undav and Chris Fuhrich providing the creative spark behind Demirovic.
Simeone will likely set up in his familiar 4-4-2 or narrow variant, with Jan Oblak in goal behind a back four of Llorente, Marc Pubill, David Hancko and Grimaldo. The midfield engine room of Simeone junior, Pablo Barrios, Cardoso and Baena gives Atletico real balance, with Julian Alvarez and Sorloth or Lee leading the forward line.
Stuttgart’s domestic form has been genuinely concerning. A 1-0 defeat to Hamburger SV at the weekend, a side battling against relegation, means Die Roten have now lost three of their last four Bundesliga outings. That is the kind of run that gets gaffers looking over their shoulders, even if Hoeness still has credit in the bank from last season’s success. The confidence levels going into a game of this magnitude are not exactly sky high from a league perspective.
In Europe though, it is a completely different story. Stuttgart have been excellent in the Champions League, beating Viking FK 3-1 in their opener with Demirovic helping himself to a hat trick, before a commanding 3-0 win over Slovan Bratislava on matchday two. The continental stage has brought out something in this squad that the Bundesliga simply has not, and that trend needs to continue if they are going to worry Atletico.
Atletico’s form is the kind that makes you want to back them in every market available. Six straight wins since that opening day defeat to Liverpool at Anfield. In that run they have beaten rivals Real Madrid 2-1, dispatched Manchester United 2-0 in the Champions League, and kept four clean sheets while scoring 14 goals and conceding only twice. Simeone has this group absolutely purring right now, and stopping them will require a near perfect performance from Stuttgart.
These two sides have not met frequently, but the historical picture is interesting from both angles. Stuttgart can point to the fact that they have won three of their last four games against Spanish opposition generally, which gives a degree of belief. However, that becomes less reassuring when you drill into their specific Champions League record against La Liga clubs, which reads two draws and five defeats, most recently a 3-1 loss to Real Madrid in the 2024-25 campaign.
Atletico have their own quirk to contend with. While they have beaten German clubs three times in their last three Champions League meetings with them, every single one of those wins came at the Metropolitano. Away from home in Germany, Atletico have lost all five of their last matches against Bundesliga opposition, a run stretching back to a victory over Bayer Leverkusen in 2016. Their only win on German soil in the European league phase dates back to October 1996 when they beat Borussia Dortmund. That is a long time to be waiting for a repeat.
This fixture sets up as a cagey European night with goals at a premium. Atletico’s defensive structure is elite at the moment and Stuttgart’s injury problems at the back are significant, but Die Roten have enough quality in attack, particularly with Demirovic fit, to at least threaten. The key tension here is between Atletico’s brilliant overall form and their poor record as visitors in Germany, which is where the value is hidden.
Atletico have kept four clean sheets in their last six but have also shown they can concede, and Stuttgart with Demirovic fit have real attacking threat. With the hosts needing to go for it to preserve their perfect European record, BTTS yes looks a reasonable call even if it is far from a banker given how stingy Simeone’s side have been recently.
Ermedin Demirovic is the standout shout here. The striker is confirmed fit, has already plundered a hat trick in this Champions League campaign, and will be leading Stuttgart’s attack against a defence missing Romero. He carries genuine threat and with Stuttgart likely pushing forward to protect their 100% European record, he will get his chances.
Atletico’s compact defensive shape tends to invite pressure and force teams wide, which generates corners, and Stuttgart at home will be pushing for the win. Expect a fairly high corner count in this one, with Stuttgart likely to dominate territory in the second half if they are chasing the game. Over 9.5 corners looks appealing.
Atletico games in Europe tend to be feisty affairs, and a Stuttgart side fighting to protect home turf in the Champions League will not be stepping back either. Simeone’s midfield is combative by design, and with Stuttgart’s players needing to work hard physically to stay in this match, a card count of over 3.5 in the match feels likely enough to consider.
| Market | Selection |
|---|---|
| Both Teams To Score | Yes |
| First Goalscorer | Ermedin Demirovic |
| Total Cards | Over 3.5 |
If Stuttgart are going to compete here they need Demirovic firing, the match has the ingredients to be tetchy and physical, and both attacks have enough quality to find the net even with Atletico’s defensive solidity factored in.
Stuttgart will make a proper game of this. The MHPArena will be rocking, Demirovic gives them a real focal point, and the Atletico away record in Germany genuinely is poor enough to leave room for an upset. But Simeone’s side are simply in exceptional form right now, and that kind of momentum is very hard to stop over 90 minutes at any level.
The smart money says Atletico edge it in a tight one. Their defensive quality should be enough to limit Stuttgart, even if Hoeness’s side nick a goal on the night. Stuttgart 1-2 Atletico Madrid feels right, and it would continue a fascinating pattern of Atletico grinding out narrow wins even when the conditions are not in their favour.
