Who do you think will win?

Stuttgart need to wake up and fast. A club that finished fourth in the Bundesliga last season and earned Champions League football is sitting 13th after six games, one point above the relegation zone, and the pressure on Sebastian Hoeness is quietly building. Friday night at MHPArena is exactly the kind of game they cannot afford to drop if they want to turn this campaign around before it completely unravels.

On the other side of this, Borussia Monchengladbach arrive as the only team in the Bundesliga without a single point to their name. Six defeats from six, a new manager already in the dugout, and a gap to safety that is stretching by the week. Alexander Blessin has had barely a fortnight to put his stamp on things and the table does not lie. Something has to give here, and one of these clubs desperately needs it to be the other.

Stuttgart vs Borussia Monchengladbach Match Details

This Bundesliga fixture takes place at MHPArena in Stuttgart, a ground where the hosts have been a different proposition compared to their struggles on the road this season. With Champions League football also on their plate, Stuttgart will treat this as a must win opportunity to climb the table and ease the growing sense of unease around the club.

Team News

Hoeness has a fair few selection headaches to manage going into this one, while Blessin is almost pulling his hair out with the injury problems hitting his attacking options.

  • Justin Diehl is out with a quadriceps injury and will not feature for Stuttgart
  • Tiago Tomas is a doubt with a muscle problem and may not be risked
  • Dan-Axel Zagadou is questionable due to a hamstring issue
  • Josha Vagnoman is a doubt after being forced off against Atletico Madrid
  • For Gladbach, Tim Kleindienst and Fritz Fleck are definitely out through injury
  • Franck Honorat, Nicolas Kuhn and Isac Lidberg are all doubts with muscle or thigh problems
  • Enzo Leopold is in the early stages of recovering from an ACL injury and is nowhere near fit
  • Jan Leszczynski is out with a knee injury
  • Ko Itakura is a doubt with a muscle issue
  • Jens Castrop returned to training this week but his involvement is uncertain

Predicted Lineups

Stuttgart look set to line up with Finn Jeltsch and Jeff Chabot in central defence given the doubts over Zagadou, with Lorenz Assignon and Max Mittelstadt providing the width from fullback. In the middle of the park, Karazor and Stiller should provide the platform for the attacking trio behind Ermedin Demirovic. If Tomas does not make it, expect Jamie Leweling, Deniz Undav and Chris Fuhrich to fill those forward positions.

Gladbach are likely to go with Moritz Nicolas in goal behind a back four of Sander, Kevin Diks, Fabio Chiarodia and Ullrich. Joe Scally and Wael Mohya should provide the wide outlets in midfield, with Florian Neuhaus and Zento Uno in the centre. Up front, Hugo Bolin and Shuto Machino are expected to lead the line given the attacking absentees Blessin is dealing with.

Recent Form

Stuttgart’s domestic form has been genuinely alarming for a club with their ambitions. Four defeats from their first six Bundesliga outings, including a 1-0 loss away at Hamburger SV last weekend, tells you there is a real disconnect between what this squad is capable of and what they are currently delivering in the league. Thirteen points is a miserable return and Hoeness will know it.

What makes it more puzzling is what Stuttgart have done in Europe. Unbeaten in the Champions League this season, with two wins and a creditable 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid in midweek. The quality is clearly there. The application and consistency domestically just has not been anywhere near that level, and that makes this fixture fascinating because they have only lost once at home across all competitions this season and have scored eight goals at MHPArena.

Gladbach’s story is simply dire. Six straight defeats in the Bundesliga, the club sacking Polanski after a humiliating 5-0 thrashing by Freiburg in September, and Blessin walking through the door to find a squad stripped of confidence and riddled with injuries. His two friendlies went reasonably well but competitive football has been unkind, with consecutive 2-1 defeats to Koln and Hoffenheim. The one crumb of comfort is that Gladbach have now scored in three consecutive league games after a goalless start to the campaign, so at least there are signs of life going forward.

Head-to-Head Record

These two clubs have a lengthy history in German football and meetings between them tend to be competitive affairs. Stuttgart have had the upper hand in recent seasons and the home record at MHPArena gives them added confidence going into this. Gladbach have found it difficult on their travels this term and there is little in the recent head to head record to suggest they will suddenly find a solution on Friday night.

What the history does suggest is that Gladbach are capable of making Stuttgart work for it and nicking a goal even when losing, which is relevant when looking at the individual betting markets for this game.

Key Stats

  • Stuttgart have lost only once at MHPArena across all competitions this season and have scored eight goals at home
  • Gladbach are the only Bundesliga club with zero points from six games and are five points behind 15th place Schalke
  • Gladbach have scored in each of their last three league games after failing to score in their opening three

Stuttgart vs Borussia Monchengladbach Betting Tips

Stuttgart at home against a winless, confidence-drained Gladbach side is the kind of fixture where the hosts need to deliver and the conditions are set up for them to do exactly that. The angle here is Stuttgart winning and winning with goals, while acknowledging that Gladbach have enough about them up front to get on the scoresheet even in defeat.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Stuttgart have been free scoring at home this season and Gladbach, for all their problems, have found the net in three on the spin. The ingredients are there for a game that goes well over two and a half goals and the over 2.5 line looks the sensible call here.

Cards Prediction

Gladbach are fighting for their Bundesliga lives and Blessin will demand his side show some character. That desperation combined with Stuttgart looking to press home their advantage at home should generate some niggly moments. Over three and a half cards is worth a look in a game with this much riding on it for both clubs.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Gladbach have scored in each of their last three league outings and even in the defeats to Koln and Hoffenheim they found the net. Stuttgart have been leaky at times this season despite their home strengths. Both teams to score looks a reasonable yes from where we are sitting.

Corners Prediction

Stuttgart like to push bodies forward at home and Gladbach will be chasing the game for large spells if things go as expected. Both teams attacking with urgency at different stages of the match should generate a healthy corner count. Over nine and a half corners is the call.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Ermedin Demirovic leads the line for Stuttgart and is the focal point of their attack. With Stuttgart expected to dominate possession and territory at home, Demirovic should get opportunities and he has the quality to punish a Gladbach defence that is already missing key personnel. He is the standout pick for first goalscorer.

Correct Score Prediction

Stuttgart to win 3-1 feels like the right call. The hosts have the firepower and the home advantage, Gladbach have enough going forward to nick one, but they do not have the defensive solidity or the squad depth right now to keep Stuttgart out across 90 minutes. A fairly comfortable Stuttgart win with Gladbach getting a consolation.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Match Result Stuttgart to Win
Both Teams To Score Yes
First Goalscorer Ermedin Demirovic

Stuttgart winning while both teams find the net fits perfectly with the 3-1 correct score prediction, and Demirovic as first goalscorer adds real value to a combination that hangs together logically given the form of both sides.

Final Match Prediction

Stuttgart simply have too much for a Gladbach side that is running on empty. Blessin has had minimal time to work with a squad that is decimated by injuries, particularly in attack, and the players he does have available are short on confidence after six defeats on the spin. MHPArena is a place where Stuttgart have looked sharp this season even if their away form has been poor, and this is the game where Hoeness finally gets his side firing in the Bundesliga.

Gladbach will not go quietly. They have found a way to score in their recent games and you can see them nicking one here too. But Stuttgart to win 3-1 is the prediction and this could be the result that kickstarts the hosts’ domestic season and simultaneously confirms just how deep a hole Gladbach are in.
