Who do you think will win?

Bolton Wanderers are a club that has relearned how to be awkward. Back in the Championship after seven years away, Steven Schumacher’s side are not rolling over for anyone, and their recent away trips to Molineux and St Mary’s have shown they can more than handle themselves at this level. Middlesbrough, meanwhile, arrive on the back of a nine-game unbeaten run that has them knocking on the door of the automatic promotion places. Two sides moving in very different directions in the table, but both with something to prove on Friday night.

What makes this interesting is that Bolton at home have been a different proposition to Bolton on the road. Three defeats in their last four at Toughsheet Community Stadium tells a different story to those confident away performances. Boro will know that. But Middlesbrough have their own away question marks, picking up just eight of their 22 points on the road this season. Something has to give.

Bolton Wanderers vs Middlesbrough Match Details

This Championship fixture takes place at Toughsheet Community Stadium, Bolton, with the Wanderers returning home following back-to-back away fixtures against two Premier League relegated sides. It is a significant test for a newly promoted club keen to demonstrate they belong in this division, against opposition currently sitting in the top three.

Team News

Both managers have a few things to sort before naming their squads, with injury concerns on each side potentially shaping how the game is set up.

  • Bolton centre-back Chris Forino has missed the last five matches with a groin injury and is not expected back until early November, so he is firmly out of this one.
  • Lewis Brunt was outstanding in the goalless draw at Southampton and keeps his place alongside skipper Eoin Toal at the heart of the Bolton back four.
  • Ruben Rodrigues and Theo Bair are pushing for starting roles in what could see some changes in the Bolton attacking department.
  • Middlesbrough striker David Strelec is still working his way back from a muscular injury and will not feature here.
  • Rokas Pukstas has barely played since joining from Hajduk Split in the summer and remains sidelined.
  • Centre-back Alfie Jones is on the treatment table with a calf problem, which could be a headache for Kim Hellberg at the back.

Predicted Lineups

Schumacher looks set to stick with the spine that served him so well at Southampton, with Brunt and Toal continuing in central defence behind a midfield that has grown in confidence over recent weeks. The big decision is further forward, where Rodrigues and Bair are pushing for inclusion. Expect at least one of them to come into the side after a promising week in training.

Bolton predicted lineup: Bazunu; Stephenson, Toal, Brunt, Famewo; Simons, Sheehan, Larrazabal, Rodrigues, Gale; Dalby

Hellberg faces his own selection dilemma at the back without Jones, but up top the partnership of Will Lankshear and Tommy Conway looks set to continue after both found the net against Cardiff. McGree and Berhalter provide energy in midfield, and Cozier-Duberry offers plenty of threat from wide areas.

Middlesbrough predicted lineup: Vitek; Brittain, Malanda, Phillips, Borges; Morris, Berhalter, Cozier-Duberry, McGree, Conway; Lankshear

Recent Form

Bolton have quietly put together a decent run of results. One defeat in their last five league games, 10 points collected across that stretch, and a third clean sheet of the season earned on the south coast last weekend. For a side that has just come back into the Championship after seven years out, that is genuinely encouraging. They are sitting 15th, six points clear of the drop zone, and while nobody is getting carried away, there is a growing belief in this squad that they can cause problems at this level.

Middlesbrough are on an entirely different trajectory. Nine league games unbeaten, third in the table, one point off top spot. They clawed back a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2 with Cardiff, which speaks to their character and the quality they carry in depth. Hellberg made key changes at the break and both second-half substitutes ended up on the scoresheet. That kind of squad flexibility is what separates the promotion chasers from the rest.

There is a caveat with Boro though. They have conceded two or more goals in six of their last seven competitive matches. That is a defensive record that does not quite match the lofty league position, and it is exactly the kind of statistic Bolton can exploit if they get bodies forward and play with the directness that caused Wolves and Southampton problems. The Wanderers will not be afraid of this Boro side.

Head-to-Head Record

This is where it gets uncomfortable for the Bolton faithful. Middlesbrough have won each of the last nine competitive meetings between these two clubs, a run stretching back to August 2014. That is a remarkable sequence, and it covers enough time that many of the current Bolton squad will not have any experience of beating Boro at any level in professional football.

Perhaps more relevantly for Friday, Bolton’s last victory over Middlesbrough in a home Championship fixture came back in April 2013. More than 13 years ago. History is not exactly on the Wanderers’ side here, though their supporters will rightly point out that this current Bolton squad are the ones that can finally end that sequence if they produce another display like the ones at Molineux and St Mary’s.

Key Stats

  • Middlesbrough are unbeaten in nine Championship games, winning five and drawing four, and sit third in the table just a point behind leaders Swansea.
  • Bolton have lost three of their last four home matches in the Championship this season, making Toughsheet a much less comfortable base than their away form might suggest.
  • Middlesbrough have conceded at least two goals in six of their last seven competitive fixtures, which points firmly towards goals at both ends of the pitch.

Bolton Wanderers vs Middlesbrough Betting Tips

The form book pulls in two directions here. Boro are the better side on paper and their unbeaten run is built on real quality, but their defensive vulnerabilities are genuine and Bolton have shown they can hurt top-half sides. With goals likely at both ends and an unpredictable home side capable of making this very uncomfortable for Middlesbrough, the value is in backing chaos rather than a clean Boro victory.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Given that Middlesbrough have shipped two or more in six of their last seven and Bolton have shown real attacking intent in recent weeks, this feels like a game that delivers on goals. Over 2.5 looks the right call and is the kind of fixture the goals markets were made for.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Will Lankshear is in fine form for Boro, netting against Cardiff to continue a productive run, and as the central striker in Hellberg’s setup he gets the most direct goal-scoring opportunities. He is worth backing to break the deadlock first at a likely solid price given the away tag.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

BTTS is a strong yes here. Bolton have found the net in their recent away fixtures and will not park the bus at home against anyone. Boro meanwhile are leaking goals despite their unbeaten run. Both teams finding the net feels close to inevitable based on what both squads have shown in the last few weeks.

Correct Score Prediction

A 2-2 draw captures everything this fixture is pointing towards. Bolton competitive enough to score twice at home, Middlesbrough clinical enough on the night to match them, and a defence on either side porous enough to let things in. It is a scoreline that respects what both teams bring to the table.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Both Teams To Score Yes
Over 2.5 Goals Over
First Goalscorer Will Lankshear

With both defences showing signs of weakness and Lankshear in red-hot form, these three picks complement each other perfectly in what looks like a high-scoring, open encounter.

Final Match Prediction

Bolton have earned the right to feel confident on home soil after those back-to-back away points, but their home record this season is a concern they cannot ignore. Middlesbrough are the stronger side and their unbeaten run is no fluke, yet that defensive fragility is a thread that Bolton will look to pull at from the first whistle. Schumacher will set his side up to be dangerous on the break and make the most of any set-piece situations.

The head-to-head record screams Boro, the home defensive form screams goals, and the visitors’ leaky backline screams Bolton will have chances. A share of the spoils feels like a reasonable outcome, with both sides nicking a goal each before one team pushes on in the final quarter. Prediction: Bolton Wanderers 2-2 Middlesbrough.
