Groningen
Sparta RotterdamThere is a proper subplot running through this one. Groningen have been leaking goals at both ends of the table this season, playing the kind of open, chaotic football that is either thrilling or infuriating depending on whose shirt you are wearing. Sparta Rotterdam, meanwhile, are a club that came into the campaign with ambitions of mid-table respectability and have spent most of it looking over their shoulder at the drop zone instead. Two sides with defensive frailties, two managers under pressure, and a head to head record that adds a fascinating wrinkle to the whole thing.
Add in the fact that Groningen were booed off their own pitch midweek after a cup humiliation against second tier opposition, and Dick Lukkien has publicly said he was ashamed of the showing, and you have a home side with a serious point to prove. Whether that wounded pride translates into a performance or just more of the same loose defending is the central question of the whole fixture.
The game takes place at Euroborg, Groningen’s home ground in the north of the Netherlands, in the Eredivisie. It is one of the more intriguing fixtures in the Dutch top flight this weekend, with both clubs needing points for very different reasons. Groningen are eighth and looking upward, while Sparta are fourteenth and need a response after back to back exits in the cup and a home defeat to Ajax.
Groningen go into this one carrying a few injury concerns, and the midweek cup tie against Emmen has complicated Lukkien’s selection options heading into the weekend. Sparta have their own absentees but should welcome back a couple of key men who were rested on Wednesday.

Sparta Rotterdam:
Lukkien will likely revert to the side that started at NEC, with Rente and Hateboer back in the back line after their half time introductions on Thursday. The attacking pair of Brynjolfur Willumsson and Thom van Bergen will lead the line, and with 14 league goals between them already, they are the obvious focal point of everything Groningen do going forward.
Groningen expected XI: Vaessen; Hateboer, Blokzijl, Csinger, Rente; De Jonge, Clement; Schreuders, Van Bergen, Van der Werff; Willumsson
Rogier Meijer will be relieved to have Toornstra and Martins Indi back in the fold. The veteran Toornstra, who made his 500th Eredivisie appearance against Ajax, brings calm and experience to a midfield that has struggled for consistency all season. Mito’s return up front is arguably the biggest piece of team news for either side this week.
Sparta Rotterdam expected XI: Brouwer; Martes, Young, Verschuren, Martins Indi, Kuipers; Van Cruijsen, Toornstra, Hatenboer, Babadi; Zonneveld
Groningen’s league campaign has been a tale of two very different performances depending on the opponent. Four wins from ten is a respectable return in Eredivisie terms, but the manner of the defeats tells you something important about where the vulnerabilities lie. A 5-1 thrashing at PSV, a 3-2 home loss to Fortuna Sittard, and a 5-2 hiding at Euroborg against Ajax are not just heavy defeats, they are the kind of scorelines that suggest structural problems at the back. Groningen have conceded 21 times in ten league games and have kept exactly one clean sheet all season. That came in a 3-0 win over PEC Zwolle, which feels like the exception rather than the rule.
The midweek cup exit against Emmen made things considerably worse from a mood perspective. Jack Cooper-Love scored twice on the counter, the Euroborg crowd whistled the team off at full time, and Lukkien stood in front of the cameras and said he was ashamed. That is not a comfortable place to be as a manager. But the home record in the league does carry some encouragement. Groningen have scored 11 times in five home games, which is a healthy rate, even if they have also conceded 11 at Euroborg in the same games. There is clearly something to work with here going forward, and Willumsson in particular has been sensational, scoring eight times in ten league appearances. The 2-2 draw at NEC was a missed opportunity, leading 2-0 at half time before conceding twice after the break, and that pattern of giving away advantages is a recurring theme.
Sparta’s season has been a grind. Two wins, three draws and five defeats from ten games, with 24 goals conceded at an average of 2.4 per match, and not a single clean sheet to their name. The 3-3 at Go Ahead Eagles followed by a 3-2 win over Willem II looked like it might signal a turning point, but a 2-1 home defeat to Ajax last weekend brought them back down to earth quickly. Their away form reads one win, one draw and two defeats from four games, and goals have featured in every single one of those fixtures, with eight scored and ten conceded. They do not travel and shut up shop, for better or worse.
This is where it gets genuinely interesting for the neutral. Sparta have won each of the last three meetings between these sides in the Eredivisie, winning 1-0 in February 2025, 2-0 in October 2025, and 2-0 again in January 2026. Groningen have failed to score in any of those three games, which is remarkable given how freely they have been finding the net this season.
That said, Groningen are at home this time, and the current versions of both clubs are quite different animals to those recent encounters. Willumsson simply was not at this level in earlier meetings, and the dynamics around Sparta’s defensive record suggest the shutout run against Groningen is not going to last. Still, the historical pattern is worth keeping in mind when sizing up the markets.
The numbers point in one direction fairly clearly here. Sparta cannot keep a clean sheet to save their lives, and they are walking into a ground where the home side has two of the Eredivisie’s most productive forwards and a point to prove after a thoroughly embarrassing week. The head to head record is the one thing that gives you slight pause, but the current form and the matchup itself suggest Groningen should get the job done this time. A high-scoring home win feels like the play.
With Groningen stung and chasing a performance, and Sparta fighting to stay competitive in a game they need points from, expect some intensity in the midfield battles. Both sides have been involved in high-scoring, competitive fixtures this season rather than cagey affairs, so the referee may have to intervene regularly. Over three and a half cards looks a reasonable shout in this one.
Given Sparta’s inability to keep a clean sheet, the return of Mito, and Groningen’s need to respond emphatically, a 3-1 home win feels like the most likely outcome. Groningen have the firepower to score multiple times, and Sparta will likely find a way onto the scoresheet as they have done everywhere else this season.
Brynjolfur Willumsson is the obvious call here. Eight league goals in ten appearances, level at the top of the Eredivisie scoring charts, and playing at home with genuine motivation after the midweek embarrassment. He scored twice at NEC last time out and has the movement and clinical edge to trouble any defence in the league. He is the first goalscorer banker of the weekend.
Over 2.5 goals is essentially a formality when you look at the numbers. Sparta have conceded in every single league game, Groningen have scored 24 times in ten matches, and neither backline has shown any real ability to shut things down this season. The last time these two sides played, it finished 2-0, but the current versions of both clubs are far more porous. Back over 2.5 with confidence.
| Market | Selection |
|---|---|
| Match Result | Groningen to Win |
| First Goalscorer | Brynjolfur Willumsson |
| Both Teams to Score | Yes |
Groningen winning, Willumsson opening the scoring, and both sides finding the net fits the pattern of this season for both clubs almost perfectly.
Lukkien needs a response, his players know it, and the Euroborg crowd will be expecting one after being whistled off midweek. Sparta arrive with a defensive record that falls apart under scrutiny, and Mito’s return is more of a consolation for their attack than a fix for what ails them at the back. Willumsson and Van Bergen are a genuine handful for any Eredivisie defence right now, and Sparta do not have the personnel to contain them consistently.
The head to head says Sparta, and three successive clean sheets against Groningen is not nothing. But on current form, in this stadium, with this level of motivation on the home side, the evidence points to Groningen. We are going with a 3-1 home win.
