Who do you think will win?

Birmingham City are in the kind of form that makes you sit up and take notice. Three points off the automatic promotion places, the joint best defensive record in the Championship, and back to back home wins with clean sheets after a sticky run of draws at St Andrew’s. Chris Davies has quietly turned what looked like a crisis into a genuine promotion push, and Tuesday night is a chance to put real daylight between themselves and the chasing pack. Millwall arrive needing a result, but they are making the trip to the West Midlands in the kind of form that suggests this could be a long evening for Alex Neil’s side.

The Lions are five points behind Birmingham and four adrift of the top eight. Last season they were pushing for the playoff final. Right now they are fighting just to stay in the conversation. A win here would change the mood considerably, but they have a tough ask on their hands.

Birmingham City vs Millwall Match Details

This Championship fixture takes place at St Andrew’s, Birmingham City’s home ground. The Blues are firmly in the mix for an automatic promotion spot, and this home game against a side they are already above in the table represents a real opportunity to consolidate that position. Millwall need the points just as badly, which should make for a competitive and possibly feisty evening in the West Midlands.

Team News

Birmingham have a potential headache in goal after James Beadle was substituted at half time during Saturday’s win at Lincoln City. August Priske is also carrying a doubt ahead of this one, which could force Davies into more than one change from the side that won at the weekend. Millwall are without midfielder Jenson Metcalfe through suspension, which is a notable absence in their engine room.

  • James Beadle (Birmingham) withdrew at half time against Lincoln and is a concern going into this
  • August Priske (Birmingham) is a doubt and may not be fit to feature
  • Ryan Allsop and Marvin Ducksch are on standby for Birmingham if needed
  • Bright Oseyi-Samuel, Max Bird and Demarai Gray are options if Davies wants fresh legs in the XI
  • Jenson Metcalfe (Millwall) serves a one match ban and is out
  • Daniel Kelly is expected to come into the Millwall midfield to cover for Metcalfe
  • Alfie Doughty, Mark Sykes and Romain Esse offer Neil alternatives out wide

Predicted Lineups

Davies looks set to make at least one enforced change in goal, with Ryan Allsop the likely man to come in if Beadle cannot go. Marvin Ducksch could also earn a start up top if Priske does not recover in time, which would give Birmingham a slightly different look going forward, though their overall shape and organisation should remain the same. The back four and the core of the midfield have been solid enough to keep largely intact despite the rotation options available.

Neil rested players late on against Derby having got the result he wanted, so his starting lineup for this one could look fairly similar to what put four past the Rams. The key change is Metcalfe’s absence in midfield, and Kelly stepping in there gives Millwall a slightly different dynamic. Whether Neil sticks with his wingers or shuffles the wide positions will be interesting to watch.

  • Birmingham (predicted): Allsop; Laird, Neumann, Klarer, Cochrane; Iwata, Solis; Roberts, Stansfield, Millar; Ducksch
  • Millwall (predicted): Crocombe; Crama, Taylor, Cooper, Sturge; Mazou-Sacko, Kelly; Neghli, Cundle, Lisbie; Dykes

Recent Form

Birmingham’s turnaround in form has been genuinely impressive. They won just one of their first six Championship games this season, which had large sections of the fanbase questioning whether Davies was the right man for the job. Since then they have won five of seven, including a 3-1 away victory at Lincoln on Saturday. That away record now stands as joint best in the division with 13 points from seven road trips, and the home form is clicking into gear too after those four consecutive draws at St Andrew’s were followed by clean sheet victories against Preston and QPR.

What stands out most is the defensive solidity. The joint best defensive record in the Championship is not a fluke. This is a team that is organised, hard to break down, and increasingly dangerous going forward. Davies has built something with genuine substance to it.

Millwall’s numbers tell a much more mixed story. Two wins from eight Championship games, and crucially both of those wins came against the bottom two sides in the division. The 4-1 against Derby at the weekend flattered them slightly in terms of what it suggests about where they are as a team right now. There have been encouraging moments, including a 2-2 draw at leaders Middlesbrough, but three defeats in five away games is a concern and the Lions are finding it hard to impose themselves consistently on the road.

Head-to-Head Record

Birmingham and Millwall have a decent history of competitive Championship encounters, and games between these two sides tend to have an edge to them. The Blues have generally had the upper hand when hosting, and St Andrew’s has not been a particularly happy hunting ground for Millwall in recent seasons. The Lions can be stubborn and well organised defensively when they need to be, but Birmingham’s current form at home and their overall momentum in this campaign makes this a difficult place to come and get something.

There is no standout pattern that heavily favours a particular scoreline, but the trend of these matches being decided by a single goal margin in tight, competitive games is worth keeping in mind when it comes to the betting.

Key Stats

  • Birmingham have the joint best defensive record in the Championship this season and have kept back to back clean sheets at home
  • Millwall have won just two of eight Championship games, both against sides currently in the bottom two
  • Birmingham’s away record stands at 13 points from seven games, joint best in the division, showing their consistency is not just a home comfort

Birmingham City vs Millwall Betting Tips

Birmingham look the stronger side here across every metric that matters. They are in excellent form, well drilled at the back, and playing with confidence. Millwall have shown they can raise their game against top opposition, as that Middlesbrough draw proved, but the general trend of this Millwall season away from home is not encouraging. The Lions are without Metcalfe in midfield, which disrupts their usual setup, and they are coming up against a Birmingham team that has conceded very little lately. The value is firmly with the home side, and the question is more about how comfortable the margin ends up being.

Correct Score Prediction

Birmingham 2-1 Millwall. The Blues should have enough to control large portions of this game and come away with the three points, but Millwall carry enough of a threat up front, particularly through Dykes, to nick one. A 2-1 feels right and represents decent value given the form lines.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Yes. Birmingham’s clean sheet streak at home has been impressive, but Millwall have shown they can score against good sides, and Dykes is a handful for any Championship defence. With the Lions needing a result and likely to commit bodies forward, the conditions are there for both sides to get on the scoresheet.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Marvin Ducksch looks like a great shout here if he comes into the starting lineup as expected. The striker has the movement and finishing quality to punish a Millwall backline that can be caught on the turn, and with Birmingham likely to control a lot of the ball in the first half, Ducksch should get opportunities early.

Cards Prediction

Over 3.5 cards is worth a look. Millwall are a physical, combative side who will not roll over quietly, and with Metcalfe suspended for a reason, the Lions are not exactly shy about putting a tackle in. Birmingham will be physical in their own right when defending their lead, and a midweek Championship fixture with this much at stake for both clubs tends to produce yellow cards in volume. Four or more bookings across the ninety minutes feels likely.

Match Result Birmingham City to Win
Both Teams To Score Yes
First Goalscorer Marvin Ducksch

Birmingham winning while both sides score fits the 2-1 scoreline prediction perfectly, and Ducksch getting the opener adds strong value to a build that hangs together logically given the form and team news heading into this one.

Final Match Prediction

Birmingham City 2-1 Millwall. Davies has built a team that is hard to beat and knows how to win ugly when needed, but they also have enough quality in the final third to create and convert chances against a Millwall side that has been inconsistent away from home. The Lions will make it competitive and they will probably get their goal, but Birmingham’s momentum, their home crowd behind them, and their defensive organisation should be enough to see this one over the line.

Millwall need to start picking up points against sides outside the bottom two if they are going to get their season back on track. Tuesday night is not the ideal place to start that process.
