DP World India Championship Preview

The DP World Tour heads to New Delhi this week for the DP World India Championship, the penultimate event of the Back 9 and one of the last chances to make a move in the Race to Dubai.

Our golf tipster has three each-way selections lined up for a tournament that produced plenty of drama on its debut last year.

A young event with a big future

This is only the second edition of the DP World India Championship, launched by DP World and the DP World Tour in 2025 and co-sanctioned with the DP World Professional Golf Tour of India.

It carries the largest prize fund ever offered by a DP World Tour event in the country, a $4 million purse, and gives India’s leading professionals the chance to take on a world-class field on home soil.

For a new tournament, it has wasted no time attracting star names, and the 2026 renewal is no exception.

The venue

The championship returns to Delhi Golf Club, the famous Lodhi course set in the heart of the capital amid Mughal-era monuments and an abundance of local wildlife.

Founded in the 1930s and reshaped over the years by Peter Thomson and later Gary Player, it is a traditional parkland layout that plays as a par 72 of only around 6,912 yards.

It is one of the shorter tests the tour visits all season, but length is far from the main currency here.

The course

What Delhi GC lacks in yardage, it makes up for in demands on precision. The course is flat, tight and densely tree-lined, with narrow fairways framed by native trees and scrubby undergrowth that punish anything offline.

Many players leave the driver in the bag for much of the week, with Rory McIlroy famously doing exactly that last year, as positioning off the tee matters far more than raw power.

The Bermuda greens are grainy and the rough around the corridors can be unpredictable, so accuracy and a sharp short game are the key traits.

What it takes to win

Despite its reputation as a stern test, Delhi GC gave up low scoring last year.

Tommy Fleetwood won the inaugural event at 22 under par, with 16 under needed just to crack the top 10, so this is a venue that rewards aggression once a player is in position.

Accuracy from the tee, quality iron play and strong scrambling all stood up well, with the leading finishers in 2025 all ranking highly for scrambling.

This is a second-shot course where those who find the short grass and get up and down when they miss tend to rise to the top.

Course form and trends

Course experience has long counted for plenty here, with the same names appearing on Delhi GC leaderboards year after year through its Asian Tour history. That makes a strong record around the Lodhi a genuine positive.

The galleries are enthusiastic and the challenge is unlike almost anywhere else on tour, so comfort in these surroundings is an edge worth respecting.

The field

Defending champion Tommy Fleetwood headlines a stellar field that also includes Rory McIlroy, his Race to Dubai rival Patrick Reed, and major champions Justin Rose, Shane Lowry, Aaron Rai and Ryan Fox, alongside home favourites such as Shubhankar Sharma and Anirban Lahiri.

With a star-studded line-up, a course that can produce a fast-moving leaderboard and three selections to follow, there should be plenty to keep us interested across all four days.

The Selections

Tommy Fleetwood, 9/1 (each-way, 7 places, Coral)

The obvious place to start, given he is the defending champion and holds the 72-hole course record of 266 after winning the inaugural event at 22 under.

Fleetwood closed with a 65 to win by two last year and clearly relishes the unique challenge, keeping the driver in the bag and plotting his way round with the control and iron play that are the hallmarks of his game.

His 2026 has been full of high-class golf, including contention in the majors and a run to the top of the world rankings, so a return to a course where he has already proved a perfect fit makes him a strong favourite. He looks the one to beat.

Shane Lowry, 14/1 (each-way, 7 places, Ladbrokes)

Lowry announced himself at Delhi GC last year, opening with a stunning 64 to lead after round one before eventually finishing tied third behind Fleetwood, so he has already shown this course suits him down to the ground.

His accuracy from the tee and his quality from tee to green are ideal for such a tight, tree-lined test, and he arrives in excellent heart after a dominant victory at the Amgen Irish Open.

A fast start, something he produced here 12 months ago, could see him go one or two better this time, and he makes plenty of appeal at 14/1.

Justin Rose, 35/1 (each-way, 7 places, Coral)

The bigger-priced pick of the three, and one who continues to defy the years.

Rose has enjoyed a superb veteran campaign, highlighted by a playoff win at the FedEx St. Jude Championship and a run to the Masters playoff, and remains one of the best iron players in the field, a skill that travels beautifully to a precision test like Delhi GC.

His experience, his composure and his world-class approach play are exactly the qualities this course demands, and at 35/1 with each-way places on offer he has solid claims as our value selection.
