The FedEx Cup Playoffs continue this week with just 50 players left standing as the BMW Championship heads to Bellerive Country Club in St Louis. The battle for East Lake is now the main focus, with only the top 30 in the standings progressing to next week’s Tour Championship. Our golf tipster went close again at the FedEx St Jude Championship, with S.W. Kim finishing second at 25/1 to land another each-way return. He is back this week with three selections at 14/1, 18/1 and 66/1.
The BMW Championship has been part of the FedEx Cup Playoffs since their introduction in 2007, replacing the historic Western Open on the PGA Tour schedule. Unlike most tournaments, it moves between different venues, and this year brings the players back to Bellerive Country Club for the first time since the course hosted the US PGA Championship in 2018.
Bellerive has plenty of history behind it. The club dates back to 1897 before relocating to its current site in 1960, where Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed the course. It hosted the US Open just five years later, when Gary Player won to complete his career Grand Slam.
The course has since staged two US PGA Championships, the US Senior Open, Senior PGA Championship and the 2008 BMW Championship. Brooks Koepka was the most recent winner here, holding off Tiger Woods to win the 2018 US PGA Championship.
Bellerive will play as a par 70 measuring 7,448 yards this week, which is considerably longer than when the world’s best last visited eight years ago. The fourth and 10th holes, which are par fives for members, will both play as par fours for the professionals.
A large creek runs through the property and comes into play on around half of the holes, while the course underwent significant work under Rees Jones in 2005 and 2006. More recent changes have focused on the greens, with the old bentgrass replaced by a more modern strain designed to cope better with the St Louis climate.
Those large bentgrass greens could have a major say in the outcome. Putting played an important role when the BMW Championship was held here in 2008, with three of the first four home ranking inside the top three for Putting Average. There was a similar story at the 2018 PGA Championship, where Brooks Koepka and Tiger Woods finished third and fourth respectively for Putting Average.
The biggest difference this time could be the extra length. Bellerive will play 131 yards longer than it did for the PGA Championship, and that should give the bigger hitters an advantage.
Koepka certainly showed the benefits of power when winning here in 2018. He ranked second for Driving Distance and second for Strokes Gained: Off the Tee, while the leaderboard was packed with players capable of producing plenty of distance. Even fairly thick rough failed to stop the longer hitters from dominating proceedings.
That does not mean iron play can be ignored. When Camilo Villegas won the BMW Championship at Bellerive in 2008, seven of the eight players immediately behind him ranked inside the top 14 for Greens in Regulation. Giving yourself enough birdie chances remains important, particularly in an event containing only 50 of the best players from the season.
Recent form is another factor that has been difficult to ignore in the BMW Championship. The majority of winners have arrived playing good golf, and the first 11 champions had all recorded a top-10 finish in one of their previous two starts.
That makes last week’s FedEx St Jude Championship worth looking at closely. The Playoffs have regularly produced players who get hot at exactly the right time and carry that form through more than one tournament. In nine of the last 13 seasons, one player has managed to win twice during the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
This has not generally been a tournament for huge outsiders either. Keegan Bradley produced two notable shocks when winning in 2018 and again in 2024, but most recent champions have been towards the front of the market.
Scottie Scheffler was favourite when winning last year, while Viktor Hovland, Patrick Cantlay, Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas and Dustin Johnson were all well fancied when taking the title. With only 50 players in the field, there are fewer genuine outsiders to begin with, although the occasional big-priced winner shows they cannot be completely dismissed.
Bellerive’s previous tournaments also suggest that keeping close to the early pace could be important. Camilo Villegas went wire-to-wire when winning the BMW here in 2008, while Brooks Koepka was only five shots back after the opening round of the 2018 PGA before moving into third at halfway and taking the lead into Sunday.
The same pattern can be found further back in the course’s history. Gary Player was only two shots behind after the first round of the 1965 US Open before taking control, while Nick Price was four behind after both 18 and 36 holes on his way to winning the 1992 PGA Championship.
It makes Bellerive an interesting tournament for anyone betting in-running. There is room to make up a few shots, but history suggests the eventual winner is unlikely to spend too much of the week buried in the bottom half of the leaderboard.
There is also much more than the BMW Championship trophy at stake. Once the final putt drops on Sunday, the FedEx Cup standings will be recalculated and only the top 30 will head to East Lake for the Tour Championship. For anyone hovering around that cut-off, a single shot could effectively decide whether their season continues.
