Phoenix Open Preview

Fresh off a superb week for our golf tipster, who landed a brilliant 50/1 winner with Justin Rose to deliver huge returns, the PGA Tour now swaps the California coastline for the Arizona desert as attention turns to one of the most entertaining stops on the schedule, the Phoenix Open.

Last week’s Farmers Insurance Open belonged entirely to Rose. Sent off as an outsider, the experienced Englishman produced a flawless performance to become the first clear wire-to-wire winner at Torrey Pines since 1955. His 24-under-par total set a new tournament scoring record and once he created daylight between himself and the field, the result never really looked in doubt. Even at 45, Rose showed that class and course management can still overpower younger rivals on demanding layouts.

Now the focus shifts to TPC Scottsdale, host of the Phoenix Open for the 38th time and a venue that rarely disappoints. First staged more than 90 years ago, the tournament has built a reputation for electric crowds, tense finishes and plenty of late twists. The par three 16th is the headline act, a stadium style hole surrounded by thousands of fans that creates an atmosphere unlike anything else on the PGA Tour.

The course itself is far from a gimmick. Measuring just over 7,200 yards and playing to a par 71, it offers scoring opportunities but demands precision when it matters most. The closing stretch is particularly lively. The 15th is reachable in two but features water that can punish any lapse in judgement, while the drivable par four 17th has played a decisive role in countless renewals. Leaders have found the water there before, and contenders know that no advantage is truly safe until the final putt drops on the 18th.

Despite tweaks and added length over the years, low numbers remain very achievable. When conditions soften, players can go deep here, as shown by previous rounds of 60 and near misses at breaking into the 50s. Fast Bermuda greens add another layer of challenge, especially under Sunday pressure.

So what does it take to win around Scottsdale? There is no overwhelming bias towards either power or accuracy off the tee, with past champions generally ranking well in both without needing to dominate either category. Instead, sharp iron play has become the clearest common thread. Recent winners have excelled in strokes gained on approach and tee-to-green performance, repeatedly giving themselves birdie chances.

Par four scoring also stands out as a key indicator. With the majority of the course made up of par fours, the eventual champion almost always separates from the field here. Putting still matters too. While it may not be quite as decisive as it once was, those who get hot on the greens tend to stay in the mix.

History suggests this is rarely a procession. Six of the last ten editions have required a playoff, and even sizeable leads have proven vulnerable. Third round leaders have often wobbled, creating opportunities for chasers and plenty of angles for in-play bettors. Patience is important for punters as well as players, since several winners have come from well off the pace after slow starts.

Thomas Detry ran away with the title last year, but more often than not this event delivers a nail biting finish. With risk-reward holes scattered throughout the back nine and the noise levels rising as the afternoon unfolds, momentum can shift in a heartbeat.

Our tipster arrives in Arizona full of confidence after last week’s 50/1 success and has three selections lined up at 20/1, 28/1 and 35/1 each way.
