Valero Texas Open Preview

The PGA Tour stays in Texas this week as the Valero Texas Open tees off at TPC San Antonio, just a week before the Masters at Augusta. Following an exciting finish at the Houston Open, this tournament brings a slightly different challenge with a long history and a distinct layout that has tested players for over a decade at this venue.

TPC San Antonio’s Oaks Course has hosted the Valero since 2010, and the course is a solid test of all facets of a player’s game. Par 72 and stretching over 7,400 yards, it winds through stands of oak trees and demands careful shot shaping. While it is not a narrow track, staying out of trouble is key, with trees lining many fairways and penal rough awaiting wayward tee shots. A unique quirk is that the downhill holes play into the prevailing wind, while the uphill holes play downwind, which can make club selection tricky throughout the round.

The greens are Bermuda grass overseeded with bentgrass and poa, running slower than average at around 11 on the Stimpmeter. Combined with the frequent Texas wind, players need a steady short game and a confident putter to make the most of scoring opportunities. Distance off the tee is far from crucial here, with winners over the last several years posting mixed driving stats. Accuracy matters more than length, and the ability to get it close on approaches has proven vital.

Looking at stats, Greens in Regulation and Putting Average are clear indicators for success. Last year’s winner Brian Harman ranked 11th for GIR but was inside the top two for putting alongside the runners-up. Strokes Gained Tee to Green and Approach have also been consistent features among winners, showing that steady, precise ball-striking is often rewarded. Scrambling can help, but it is rarely the difference between winning and missing out.

In-play, this is a tournament where staying near the top of the leaderboard is important. Recent history shows that most winners are in the top three at the halfway stage, and ten of the last fifteen winners were leading or co-leading after three rounds. Wire-to-wire triumphs are rare but staying in contention early makes life easier, especially on a course that can swing with the wind. The front nine is generally tougher than the back, but the finishing stretch offers chances to make a move. Par five 14th has been the easiest hole for the past ten years, while the par four 17th also provides a scoring opportunity for those willing to take it on. The par five 18th can be either a blessing or a test depending on how the pins are set.

History shows the Valero Texas Open can throw up winners at all sorts of prices, from established names to more under-the-radar players. With the Masters looming next week, expect competitors to be sharp, especially on the greens. Those who combine solid iron play with strong putting and can handle the wind are the ones to watch.
