Fontwell Park is a small jumps course that is located in West Sussex in the south of England.
The racecourse was opened in 1924 and hosts National Hunt jumps meetings all throughout the year along with various non-horse racing events such as Family Fun Days, outdoor cinema events, car boot sales and beer festivals.
Fontwell Park Racecourse
The course is a left-handed sharp jumping track that is unique due to it being the only course in the UK to have a figure of eight chase course.
The various climbs and descents can make the course challenging along with the stiff uphill straight to the finish.
Although the figure of eight track is used for chases, the hurdles course is a more standard oval shape.
Fontwell Park Feature Races
July is the only time that racing is paused at Fontwell with National Hunt races taking place in all other months.
The biggest race of the season at Fontwell Park is the Grade Two National Spirit Hurdle which takes place in February. Ten fences are to be jumped over a distance of 2 miles and 3 furlongs and used to be served as a trial for the Champion Hurdle. The race is now regarded as a trial for the Stayers’ Hurdle and is named after National Spirit, who was a dual winner of the Champion Hurdle in the 1940s.
