Located in East Sussex around 10 miles inland from Brighton, Plumpton Racecourse is one of the smaller National Hunt courses in the country.
Plumpton gained recognition in 2018 when the 5,000 capacity course was crowned the Best Small Racecourse in the South. It is also the course where Tony McCoy rode his 3,000th winner on Restless d’Artaix in February 2009.
The left-handed course has a distance of just over 1 mile and features some tight turns. The back straight is downhill whereas the home straight features a steep climb.
The hurdles course at Plumpton is situated just outside of the chase course.
Plumpton Feature Races
Plumpton Racecourse hosts 17 fixtures from September to May each year with the most notable being:
- Sussex National Handicap Chase – Taking place every January and usually on the first Sunday of the new year, the Sussex National Handicap Chase is run over 2 miles and 5 furlongs and open to cases aged five and over. Twenty fences are to be jumped on usually rather testing ground given the time of the year.
