Sandown Park Tips

Opening in 1897, Sandown Racecourse is located on the outskirts of London in Esher, Surrey. It hosts races all throughout the year including 6 Grade One National Hunt races and one Group 1 flat race. The course is also widely used for events such as concerts, car shows, wedding fairs and private events.

24 racedays take place at the course each year with race distances ranging from five furlongs (flat) to over three miles (jumps).

Sandown Park is owned by the Jockey Club which owns and operates fifteen racecourses across the UK.

Sandown Park Jumps Course

A right-handed galloping track that is a difficult test of jumping ability due to the back straight fences of which there are seven. The final three fences, also known the ‘Railway Fences’, are in close proximity and so agile steeplechasers with experience have an advantage on the course.

As the runners turn to the home straight, the Pond Fence is to be jumped before a steep uphill climb to the finish line.

Sandown Park Flat Course

A five-furlong track that has a steady rise throughout. The flat course runs directly through the centre of the jumps course.

• G1 track – Eclipse Stakes in July the highlight, also plenty of other Group races
• Right-handed ovalish shape of 1m4f
• Stiff finish
• 5f races take place up the centre of the track
• Jedd O’Keeffe (3/6) respected with a 50% strike-rate
• Graham McPherson (4/10 and 6 places) for a 40% strike-rate of note
• Heather Main (5/19) with a 26.32% strike-rate does well here
• Charlie Appleby (25/89 and 48 places) for a 28% strike-rate likes this track
• Frankie Dettori (24/73) has a near 33% strike-rate here
• Cieren Fallon (9/53 and 19 places) for a near 17% strike-rate shows a good LSP
• Tom Marquand (23/142) for a 16% strike-rate is another with a decent LSP

Jumps Course

• G1 track with Tingle Creek and Henry VIII Novices in December the early season highlights. Also G1 Scilly Isles Novice Chase in February and end of season finale.
• Plenty of highly competitive handicaps too including what was the Whitbread in April and the Imperial Cup in early March
• Right-handed, stiff finish – three Railway Fences come up quickly in chases and the Pond Fence can cause problems too
• Fergus Gillard (3/7) for a 43% strike-rate has done well here
• Nico de Boinville (25/92) for 27% is respected
• Sean Houlihan (4/22 and 8 places) for 18% strike-rate has a good LSP
• Charlie Deutsch (9/41) another to consider with a near 22% strike-rate
• Nigel Twiston-Davies (11/58 and 18 places in total) for a near 19% strike-rate shows a good LSP
• Young trainer Ben Clarke currently 2 wins from 2 runners at the track
• Stuart Edmunds (4/13 and 7 places in total) of note with a near 31% strike-rate
• Nicky Henderson (31/137) has a 22.63% strike-rate but a big level stakes loss (35pts)
• Tim Vaughan respected with outsiders – 4/11 with horses priced 12/1 or bigger. Two 12/1 wins plus 16’s and 20’s winners and a 16/1 2nd in a 4 runner race
