Southwell Racecourse is situated in the county of Nottinghamshire and is one of just six courses in the UK to boast an all-weather track with the others being Lingfield Park, Wolverhampton, Kempton Park, Chelmsford City and Newcastle Racecourse. However, it is the only one to use Fibresand as its surface which is a mixture of sand and fibres. Although, the course is looking to change the surface to the more commonly used Tapeta and applied to do so in 2021. There is also a turf course at Southwell which hosts National Hunt racing.
Southwell Racecourse
The all-weather track at Southwell is left-handed and oval in shape. It measures a distance of 10 furlongs per circuit and has a home straight of three furlongs.
Using the chute, sprint races of five furlongs can take place on the straight course.
The turf course, which is used for jumps racing, runs inside of the all-weather track. It can be quite testing in wet weather and features rather stiff portable fences and brush-type hurdles which can also be more of a challenge compared to the standard variety.
Southwell Feature Races
Racing takes place all year round across the two tracks at Southwell. The racecourse is one of the locations for the All-Weather Championships which takes place at Easter and always draws in a crowd. However, perhaps the busiest days of the year at Southwell are Ladies’ Day which takes place in August and Gentlemen’s Evening in December. Both racedays attract big crowds who look to dress to impress as well as enjoying top-class racing.
