Quarterfinal day at the ATP Hangzhou Open has arrived, and there are some genuinely interesting matchups to get stuck into. We have a former World No. 1 on court, a local Hong Kong favourite, and a handful of players all trying to kick off their Asian swing with a run to the final four. Here is how I see each match playing out.

Fabian Marozsan vs Kyrian Jacquet

These two have never met before, so there is no head to head history to lean on. What we do have is a fascinating stylistic contrast. Marozsan is a genuinely creative all court player who can conjure something out of nothing, but he is not always the most consistent performer from the baseline over the course of a long match. Jacquet is very much the opposite type, a counter puncher who will happily grind from the back and wait for opponents to make mistakes. He has limited top level experience, but his game is built for making life uncomfortable.

That said, I think experience and ceiling are what separate these two. Marozsan has played enough matches at this level to know how to manage an opponent who simply wants to keep the ball in play. His moments of quality should be enough to swing the match his way, even if Jacquet makes him work for it. Marozsan wins this in three sets.

Roman Safiullin vs Yunchaokete Bu

Another first time meeting, and another match between two players who are currently sitting outside the top 100 but are more than capable of causing problems on hard courts. Bu showed serious quality at the US Open, demonstrating he can outhit elite level players when everything is clicking. Safiullin is a similar profile in many ways, a big hitter who can be devastating on faster surfaces and who leans heavily on his serve to dictate terms.

This should be close. Both players will be looking to dominate on serve and limit the number of extended baseline exchanges. Where I think Bu edges it is in his return game and how he handles pressure moments. Safiullin can go for too much at the wrong times, and in a tight match that kind of decision making matters. Bu has shown he has a cool head under pressure, and I think that gives him the edge here. Bu wins in three sets.

Hugo Gaston vs Andrey Rublev

Rublev leads the only previous meeting between these two, and I expect him to add to that record today. Gaston has done well to reach the quarterfinals given the physical problems he dealt with earlier in the season, and his clever baseline game is no joke. He will look to work the ball into Rublev’s backhand and take pace off where he can, targeting the second serve as much as possible.

The problem for Gaston is that Rublev, even in a slightly less dominant version of himself compared to a couple of years ago, still has enormous firepower off his forehand. When that weapon is working at full throttle, there are very few players at this level who can absorb it comfortably. Rublev opened his tournament well here in Hangzhou, and if he carries that intensity into this match, Gaston will not have enough answers. Rublev wins comfortably in straight sets.

Daniil Medvedev vs Coleman Wong

This is a first meeting between the two, and on paper it looks like comfortable territory for Medvedev. It has been a strange year for the Russian, with some bright moments offset by some real lows, and he will be keen to build something positive on the Asian swing after a disappointing Major season. Wong is the local hope here and will have the crowd behind him, which should not be underestimated as a factor.

The key question is whether Wong can disrupt Medvedev with his serve enough to stay competitive. From the baseline, Medvedev is simply a level above what Wong can handle consistently. The returns, the retrieval, the tactical intelligence, it all adds up to a player who will suffocate Wong if the Hong Kong man cannot win enough cheap points on serve. I expect Wong to have his moments, but not enough of them. Medvedev wins in straight sets.
