Betfred temporary pause in Ireland has been confirmed by the bookmaker, with operations set to stop from June 30 as the company prepares for the introduction of the country’s new gambling licensing framework.
The move comes ahead of the launch of the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland’s new licensing regime on July 1, which marks a significant change in how betting operators are regulated across the country.
In a message sent to customers, Betfred said it was taking a “temporary pause” while it aligns its business with the new GRAI regulations. The bookmaker has not provided a return date but stated that it hopes to resume operations in Ireland as soon as possible.
Irish customers have been advised to withdraw any remaining account balances before June 30. Betfred has also warned users not to place bets that are scheduled to settle after June 29, as account access will be unavailable once the suspension begins.
The announcement has naturally raised questions from punters with long-term wagers already in place, particularly with the 2026 FIFA World Cup currently underway. However, reports suggest that existing World Cup bets will continue to be settled as normal, despite the temporary suspension of services.
Ireland’s new regulatory framework is one of the biggest changes to the country’s gambling sector in decades. The Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland began issuing licences earlier this year, with remote betting operators required to operate under the new system from July 1.
The regulator will oversee licensing, compliance, consumer protection measures and anti-money laundering controls, with significant penalties available for operators that fail to meet the required standards.
While Betfred has not revealed exactly when it expects to return to the Irish market, the company has stressed that the suspension is only temporary and that further updates will be provided to customers in due course.
