A new study commissioned by Entain has revealed that most UK adults struggle to tell the difference between legal betting adverts and promotions from unlicensed gambling websites.
The findings come at a time when betting activity is expected to increase during the World Cup, raising fresh concerns about how easily punters could be exposed to illegal operators through social media and online advertising.
According to the research, 74 per cent of UK adults cannot confidently identify whether a betting advert comes from a licensed bookmaker or an unlicensed operator.
The survey, carried out by YouGov on behalf of Entain, questioned more than 2,000 adults across Great Britain.
While eight in ten respondents said they would be unlikely to knowingly place bets with an illegal bookmaker, only 10 per cent said they found it easy to recognise a licensed betting advert online.
The study also highlighted concerns around public confidence in regulation. Just seven per cent of those surveyed felt current measures are very effective at preventing illegal gambling, while around a third believed more should be done to protect consumers.
As betting adverts become increasingly common across social media platforms, many punters may not realise they are clicking through to operators that are not licensed to accept customers in Great Britain.
Licensed bookmakers in the UK must follow strict rules designed to protect customers.
This includes identity verification, responsible gambling tools, self-exclusion schemes, complaints procedures and oversight from the Gambling Commission.
Unlicensed operators do not have to meet these standards, meaning customers could have fewer protections if something goes wrong.
Entain has responded by launching a public awareness campaign encouraging bettors to check whether a bookmaker is properly licensed before signing up or placing a bet.

One of the easiest ways to verify a betting site is to search the Gambling Commission Public Register.
The register lists every operator currently licensed to offer gambling services in Great Britain.
If a bookmaker does not appear on the register, customers should think carefully before using the site.
For most punters, sticking with established, licensed bookmakers remains the safest option.

Every bookmaker featured on WhichBookie holds a valid Gambling Commission licence, giving customers added peace of mind when opening an account.
The report also highlights how difficult it has become to distinguish legitimate adverts from misleading promotions online.
Social media feeds are now filled with sponsored posts, affiliate promotions, influencer content and paid advertising, making it much harder for users to know whether a betting offer comes from a licensed operator.
This is particularly important during major sporting events such as the World Cup, when betting promotions become more frequent across multiple platforms.
The research serves as a useful reminder that not every betting advert appearing online comes from a regulated bookmaker.
Before registering with a new betting site, it is worth taking a few moments to check that the operator is licensed by the Gambling Commission.
Doing so can help ensure you benefit from the consumer protections, safer gambling tools and regulatory safeguards that licensed UK bookmakers are required to provide.
