Former World Cruiserweight Champion Johnny Nelson has shared his Boxing tips and told WhichBookie.co.uk that he believes Conor Benn will beat Chris Eubank Jr. on points.
Nelson outlined what he thinks Benn and Eubank need to do respectively to win on Saturday night, highlighting Benn’s speed and aggression in comparison to Eubank’s size and power.
Speaking to WhichBookie, Nelson said: “My prediction is that Conor Benn will beat Chris Eubank Jr. by way of a tight points decision.
“Conor’s main threats, which he must use to good effect in this fight, are pace and pressure. With pace and pressure, he can snatch Eubank Jr’s heart.
“He can snatch his lungs, drain his energy and put him under immense pressure. I’m not sure Benn can stop him; I don’t see a one-punch knockout happening there. That said, I could see a situation where the onslaught is so constant that the referee has to step in.”
Speaking on Eubank Jr’s strengths, Nelson added: “Eubank’s obvious strength is his size. With that comes natural strength as well, which should stand him in good stead.
“But he has to control the pace. If he can control the pace, he will win. If he fails to control the pace, he will lose. It’s that simple.”
Nelson emphasised the importance of Benn’s emotions heading into the fight, advising him to use them to his advantage rather than suppress them.
“Conor Benn should use his emotions in this fight,” said Nelson. “We’ve seen him get emotional and worked up in the build-up and in this instance, I don’t think that will be a hindrance.
“In other fights and in his career moving forward, letting his emotions get the better of him won’t serve him well, but here that won’t be the case.
“We saw how the first fight went down, before, during and after the actual bout itself. It was emotionally charged and this fight will be as well. Trying to come across as smart, sharp and antagonistic is not the right approach for this fight.
“There’s no love lost here, there’s no secrets. He knows that getting worked up and coming out with immense intensity is what works for him, so I don’t know why he wouldn’t capitalise on that.
Comparing the bout to previous World Title fights where emotions played a big role, Nelson highlighted Roberto Duran and Sugar Ray Leonard’s rivalry: “I think back to when Roberto Duran fought Sugar Ray Leonard for the first time,” he added. “Duran was rude, disrespectful and making jokes about his wife in front of him! In the press conference he was trying to get Sugar Ray so angry that he lost focus and wasn’t able to box him in his usual skilful, beautiful style.
“He started to dance to Duran’s tune, which is exactly what he wanted. He learned from that and six months later he came in much more composed, bamboozled him and outboxed him. He got so frustrated and quit mid-fight.
“In this case, it’ll work the other way round. Chris can’t get roped into the antics. He needs to keep his head and keep it to boxing. If he can do that, he’ll win more easily than he did last time. Conor needs to keep trying to plant the seed and get Eubank riled up.”
