Michael Carrick Manager Odds: Man Utd Boss 12/1 to Stay
Michael Carrick is fighting for his job after Sunday’s 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth, which meant that the team’s winless streak is now eight…
A Portsmouth punter turned a £4 stake into almost £1 million on Saturday with a 12-fold corner accumulator on English Football League (EFL) games. The bet was very close to falling apart, as only one of the legs had reached the required 12-corner total by the 76th minute, and four more selections only cleared the line by one corner.
The 45-year-old retired customer, who has remained anonymous, placed the bet on the afternoon of October 24. He and a group of friends regularly build weekend accumulators together, each adding a leg in their group chat. His own speciality is corners, compared to his mates who prefer both teams to score.
With £4 left in his account, he decided to go it alone and put together a corners bet of his own. He selected a dozen matches, ten from League One and two from the Championship. The punter backed each game to have over 11.5 corners. The combined odds were 249,345/1, giving a return of £997,385.09 from the £4 bet.
The Aston Villa supporter told Betfair that he spent most of the early part of the day watching his team play alongside his son, before they walked home in the heavy rain. He didn’t check his account until about half an hour after the final whistles had gone, initially not believing that his account balance was real.
The punter needed a total of 144 corners in total across the 12 games. The matches ended up producing 168 for an average of 14 per game, which suggests comfortable margins.
However, the reality was different. AFC Wimbledon v Wycombe finished with exactly 12 corners, the bare minimum. The 12th only arrived in the 76th minute, which meant that a near £1 million return was waiting for one more corner for the rest of the game. Four more legs finished on 13 corners, just one clear of the line:
That meant 5 of the 12 legs were a single corner away from defeat. This bet also shows how separate corners are from goal-scoring markets. Oxford United vs Bradford finished goalless and still produced 14 corners. Several other selections were low-scoring affairs too.
Anyone backing over 2.5 goals in those games would have been disappointed. Teams can dominate possession, have high shot counts, and win set pieces without ever putting the ball into the net, which is exactly what a corners punter is betting on.
What made the bet so valuable was the line he chose alongside the total number of selections. Total corner markets are often set somewhere between 8.5 and 10.5. By having each selection over 11.5, the punter turned what might otherwise be odds-on or near-even prices into genuine prices.
None of the legs was shorter than 5/4, with the longest being Stevenage vs MK Dons at 3/1. The average selection was just under 9/5, which is why multiplying 12 prices together gets the sizeable odds. Here’s the full bet slip:
| Match | Odds | Corners |
|---|---|---|
| Oxford Utd v Bradford | 5/4 | 14 |
| Reading v Barnsley | 7/5 | 13 |
| Stevenage v MK Dons | 3/1 | 16 |
| Doncaster v Sheffield Wednesday | 7/4 | 14 |
| Cambridge Utd v Plymouth | 31/20 | 16 |
| AFC Wimbledon v Wycombe | 8/5 | 12 |
| Notts County v Stockport | 23/10 | 13 |
| Burton Albion v Leyton Orient | 14/5 | 13 |
| Bromley v Peterborough | 7/5 | 15 |
| Preston v West Brom | 31/20 | 15 |
| QPR v Swansea | 2/1 | 14 |
| Blackpool v Mansfield | 7/4 | 13 |
It’s also notable that 10 of the 12 selections were League One games. Lower league football tends to be more open with direct play, crosses into the box, and stretched defences, all of which can generate corners.
Matches between evenly matched teams can swing from end to end. Despite this, corner counts can vary widely from week to week. Anyone interested in how these markets work can check out our corners betting guide and get regular tips for upcoming games.
The winner of the almost seven-figure return plans to use the money to clear his mortgage, buy new cars for himself and his wife, and to go on a family holiday. There will also be more trips to Villa Park.
