Celtic are arguably the most successful club in Scotland, with a slight edge in total major trophies (120 to 118) to rivals Rangers. They hold 53 Scottish League titles, 41 Scottish Cups, and the achievement of being the first British club to lift the European Cup back in 1967. With an enormous fanbase and huge expectations in the Scottish league & cups, the manager role at the club is not an easy job to take.
After a turbulent start to the 2025/26 season, the club now finds itself searching for a new manager once again following Brendan Rodgers’ resignation.
Brendan Rodgers’ second spell in charge of Celtic came to an abrupt end following a 3-1 defeat to Hearts that left the champions eight points adrift in the Scottish Premiership title race. His resignation, confirmed on 27th October 2025, came following growing tension between the manager and the board, with majority shareholder Dermot Desmond accusing Rodgers of creating a “toxic atmosphere” behind the scenes.
Despite domestic success in 2024 and 2025, cracks began to show earlier this season following a humiliating Champions League exit to Kairat Almaty and frustration over the club’s summer recruitment.
Celtic have appointed Martin O’Neill and Shaun Maloney as interim coaches. O’Neill, who led Celtic to domestic dominance and European success in the early 2000s, returns to steady the ship alongside Maloney – a popular former player and rising coach. The pair are expected to oversee first-team duties while the club’s search for a permanent replacement is under way.
Few managerial positions come with as much expectation as the Celtic job. Whoever steps in will inherit a squad used to winning, but one currently struggling for confidence.
Here are some of the early frontrunners in the betting markets for the next Celtic manager:
Kieran McKenna
The Ipswich Town boss is the clear early favourite. McKenna has previously been linked with Man Utd, Chelsea and Brighton after guiding Ipswich to back-to-back EFL promotions.
Robbie Keane
The former Celtic striker has made no secret of his ambition to manage at the top level. Keane’s passion and connection with the club make him a favourite, but his lack of managerial experience may hold him back.
Ange Postecoglou
Could the former treble-winning manager return? Postecoglou remains hugely popular with Celtic fans after his successful spell at Parkhead. Having moved on to Tottenham Hotspur, his name continues to surface whenever the Celtic job becomes available. Though a return seems unlikely at this stage, it can’t be ruled out entirely.
